Finding a Monologue?

Hi everyone!

I’m going to be auditioning for a couple of different theatre programs, and I’m having difficulty choosing a good monologue to audition with. I’ve gone through all of the contemporary plays that were available at my library and I wasn’t able to find a monologue that I liked. I fell in love with Carol’s monologue from David Mamet’s Oleanna, but having done some research on it, it seems to be fairly overdone. Are there any similar dramatic monologues of good quality I could use?

I guess it helps to know a little bit about me as an actress. I’m 17, but I seem a bit older than I actually am. I’d say I’d fit roles that are from 17-25. I’m physically average in every sense; I’m white, 5’4", and an average weight. I’m still feeling out my type, but I tend to get cast in roles that have a bit of maturity in them. Think secretaries, teachers, therapists, etc. Quite a few of the characters I’ve played have a sarcastic edge to them, though.

Thanks!

Hi @skelctal I hope that you find something very soon. We’re in audition season. Have you seen any plays that you really thought were enjoyable ? If one of your monologues have to be Shakespeare, you could always ask yourself if you want it to be comedic or serious. for the rest watch some plays. Most of these pieces only have to be 1-2 minutes in length. There are so many out there. YouTube me help and perhaps look for different characters within the performed play (if it seems interesting) hope this helps you to grab something fast.
good luck

I would agree that Youtube has many to view and may be a source of inspiration. Maybe check in with your theater teacher as well? Or, have you had previous monologues from classwork at school that might help? Or, is there a local acting coach that can help you with this or a director at a community playhouse you can contact? Based on your description, maybe take a look at the play called “the dining room”. There is a lot of material there. For classical, select something you can master in a short period of time. Something you can own with confidence, even if it is a typical piece…due time constraint. Best of luck to you!!

You may want to call The Drama Book Shop in New York - (212) 944-0595 - and ask for suggestions. Explain your timing because as @actingdreams mentions, audition season is underway! You will likely want 3 or 4 (dramatic, comedic, classical).

Hello, I too was struggling with finding monologues until I came across this website called Mister monologue. He’s basically a guy that went to acting school and helps people find monologues that fit their type. You have to pay, but it’s completely worth it. I can speak from experience. He helped me find 3 wonderful monologues. Hope this helps!

In a pinch we’ve used College audition Coach which has a monologue service

what a great business! I love how he will skype with you, figure out your personality and what may fit with what your goal is. Great site. I will remember these for future students
