I graduated last week. For about the last 2 weeks I’ve been applying to any company or position that I find interesting. I majored in Chemical Engineering. I have a 3.0+ GPA, EI License, Internship experience, held officer position in my club, etc. So overall I thought I had a decent resume. But I’m getting worried because I just keep applying and I’m not hearing back from anyone. I’ve been checking job boards like Indeed and other ones, lately I’ve been going the company websites directly. I make separate cover letters for each company I apply to. Does anyone have any other tips that may help?
The only reason I waited this long was because my GPA was below a 3.0 until I graduated and I know how difficult it can be to find a job with a GPA below a 3.0 and I wanted to be able to put my EI licensure on my resume as well.
Apply to a greater variety of jobs. Unfortunately, the supply of chemical engineering graduates exceeds the demand.
Does your college a have a job placement center? Avail yourself of its resources.
This, I think, was a BIG mistake. Are you saying you did not do ANY on campus interviews (through your career placement office) during your senior year? Most engineers get their first job through on-campus interviews. If I could hazard a guess, I would say that the majority of ChemE graduates had GPA below 3.0, so that threshold should not have been a deterrent.
In addition to the career placement center at your school (mentioned above), I would suggest that you reach out to some of your Chemical Engineering professors at your school who might have industry contacts or know of current openings at various companies. You could try to contact graduates from your ChemE program for possible job openings at their company, can provide job leads at other companies or are willing to “hand deliver” your resume to hiring managers (engineering) at their company.
