Hello, I was wondering if someone could give me some perspective of the fine arts program at W&M. My D is a talented artist, and would like to at least minor in studio arts. She has heard that W&M is not a great place for the arts and is leaning toward UVA because of this. However, i feel that she is more of a W&M type of kid. Can anyone give me an idea of what kind of art classes, majors or programs there are at William and Mary??

Actually W&M is a great place for the fine arts. We offer programs in studio art, dance (minor), theatre and music. We do not offer a BFA, only a BA, so all of our fine arts are open meaning any student can take classes in them and any student can major/minor in them without auditioning.

We do have a good number of students who participate in these departments and those not majoring/minoring can still take classes and participate in ensembles/performance groups/studios/etc.

If your D is an admitted student, we’d encourage her to attend Day for Admitted Students. There’s a fine arts session that day which might help her learn more about what’s available. If she’s a prospective student we’d encourage her to contact our Fine Arts departments and speak with faculty to see if we have the types of classes and opportunities she’s hoping for.

Thanks so much for your reply. My daughter is an admitted student and we will be attending the admitted students day on the 16th. Seeing the fine arts(studio arts) would be wonderful for her. Which building should we look for and is there a particular time? or is it just what suits best for our schedule?

Glad she’s visiting on Day for Admitted Students. You’ll get a full day’s schedule at check-in. In the morning there will be a fine arts session at which faculty from all of the fine arts will be available to talk about their particular disciplines and opportunities for students. Between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. the Art and Art History Department will be open for students and families to stop by and ask questions. They will be in their space so that students can see the classrooms/studios/exhibits. The exact building and room will be in the program you get that morning.
