Hi I'm a high school junior and I just took my first real SAT recently after doing a good bit of studying and I'm looking for advice to do even better for my next SAT.

Math - I'm fairly comfortable with the math section but sometimes I do come up against a math question that baffles me. When i take practice tests I usually get in the 720-740 range but it seems like I'm stuck at that bit and I'm looking for advice on how to get over that hump. I have done many many practice math sections so I don't know what to do.

Critical reading - In this sections I'm doing fine on sentence completions and I'm studying some major vocab from direct hits and PR that should help me do even better. But the passage questions are really difficult for me and my reading score is no where near want I want it to be. I'm usually getting 600-640 on practice tests and I would really like to hit the 700s. I'm getting in a habit of reading every night, and reading the NY times. But I really need some advice on what to do to get better at critical reading. I'm very dedicated so I'm not afraid to do some hard work to get the score I want

Reading is a tough one. You eventually get the knack of it though… I remember when I scored an abysmal 52 on my first PSAT in Sophomore year, and now I score 700s-780s on all my practice tests. Doing practice tests helps a lot: keep at 'em. I also got the Direct Hits books, which helped a TON with vocabulary (I usually get perfect or miss one on the sentence completion sections now). I’d say keep at what you are doing right now and you should definitely notice a good increase in your scores. If I improved 250 points, you could improve and get an 700-800 reading easily.

For math, do as many problems as possible. From all sources, whether they are collegeboard or not. Familiarize yourself w/ an algorithm (your personal way of solving them), for any and all problems that gives you trouble. Is there any type of math question that specifically baffles you? For instance, the “coordinate geometry” or the “algebra” types? I am also assuming it’s only the hard ones that can baffle you. By the way, I feel the same way, if not worser than you on the math…I completely messed up this time (-7 I think), although I believe I scored perfect on crit reading and near perfect on writing…I am a junior as well.

Hey guys thanks for the advice but I still really have no clue of what to do for Critical reading, I have about a month and a half ahead of me to use wisely to boost my CR score to the max and I really need to know what to do. Anybody with experience on this subject please chime in.
