First College rejection due to low gpa

Hi Everyone,
I have a senior in high school that is very afraid that she won’t get into college. She screwed up in 11th grade and barely passed with almost all D’s. Her SAT score is around 1480 (she is planning on retaking it) but is beginning to see the damage of last year. She received one college rejection letter so far and cried all night. She has applied to Temple, NC A&T, Clark, High Point and Delaware State. I want to be realistic but I don’t believe she will get in. I have been encouraging her to continue her good grades now (A’s and B’s) but I’m not sure things will happen the way that she wants. I spoke to her about community college and then transferring as an option. She attends a private catholic high school in Maryland, has done 55 hours of community service and doesn't do anything else because she wants to keep her grades up. Any advice on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

That is a perfect case not to apply early. She need to show her improved grades in senior year first semester and apply RD. If she got rejected early, she cannot go back to apply RD. Also, try to improve her SAT score at the same time.

Her SAT needs to go up if she wants to overcome that low GPA.

Here are the criteria for admissions to delaware state. She needs C’s in core courses.

Look at Project Success and Project JumpStart.

I would have her call and talk with an admissions person. Maybe they will wait for additional grades and take her on probation.

I would be proactive rather than sit back and wait.

Good luck.

What is she thinking of majoring in? That may help in narrowing the school search down a little.

Nita, repost this in the parent section. You will get help from parents who do not read what are my chances.

she also may be a great candidate for a gap year … if she took a gap year when she applies all her senior year grades would show on her transcript … this may help school forgive the bad old grades … but puts things on hold for a year.

Going to a CC first could have the same affect and would let her start college right away … but would involve a transfer … and depending on the 4 year school this may affect her financial aid.

3togo, that is excellent advice.

Barely passed with all D’s? Go with community college and transfer.
