First Days of Classes 2014 Feedback

Like last year, I thought it would be fun and useful to have a thread where everyone can post their child's reactions and reports about their first classes, and later what clubs/activities they decided on.

No takers? Guess I’ll start things off. Wanted to wai until he had the first week under his belt. Actually second week for our son since he did Explore NOLA. I’ve been texting him once every night just to see how things were going. Last night I get “are you going to text me every night for the next four years”? Guess it’s time to lay off a bit!

He likes all his classes so far and his professors. Of course that is subject to change as the semester wears on. He was intimidated by Spanish at first and didn’t feel his high school teachers prepared him enough but decided to stick with it as he found most of the kids in his class felt the same way. He really loves his Ethics class and likes Symbolic Logic but finds it “mind blowing”.

Since he had already completed a few introductory level classes in history, poli sci and English he is able to take some upper level classes. One of the Poli-sci classes can be his Writing Intensive class for his major so he added the Writing practicum and another credit so he has 18.5 credits! I told him to not overdo it but he feels it’s something he can handle since 1.5 credits is the Tides class. We shall see how that goes.

He’s pretty neutral on the roommate situation. They didn’t hit it off as BFF’s but they don’t dislike each other. He says they are never really in the room at the same time and basically just do their own thing. It’s not a bad situation, just meh. He’s in Wall and waiting for the whole join the committee thing to start up.

He applied for some on-campus jobs and joined a whole slew of clubs yesterday at the Activities Expo- some for fun some academic. And rowing???I will be amazed if he sticks with that! Don’t they practice at like 5:00 am!?

Tonight he is going on the Riverboat cruise and tomorrow he is participating in Outreach Tulane. So he’s been keeping busy and reassures me that he loves it!

He didn’t get a ticket for the first home football game and is a bit bitter about that. Poor planning on the part of the athletic dept to not reserve seats for at least all the undergrads. And now kids who did get tickets are scalping them. maybe they should change the student admission to by ID instead of issuing tickets.

Hopefully things will continue to go this smooth. Once week down, 14 more to go!

Admission to athletic events used to be on an ID basis. I guess they will have to see how routinely sold out these games are. I agree that students should get absolute first priority.

But good to hear things are going fairly smoothly on the whole. My D also liked Symbolic Logic. He needs to be careful not to go overboard on the clubs, but that usually smooths itself out as well.

Classes are going well for my DD. Her favorite is the English writing class. I’m not sure why it stands out but she is a good writer and she loves the prof. The Spanish is difficult for her. I don’t think the HS prepared them as they should have. I’m hoping that it will go well, as she will complete her Spanish requirement with this one course! She likes all her profs and says she has lots of work to do, but it’s doable. The second day of classes she commented that she likes the way college classes are-- they keep going, no bs and no stopping for questions which slow down the class. She comes from a very small hs and I was concerned about the large seminar classes but when I asked her about it she said “The room is made to hold that many”! That wasn’t exactly what I was asking about but I suppose the answer was in there. Her hs graduating class had 100 students and her psych class has 120! I think that would be difficult but she sounds confident and seems to have it under control. I’m happy to report that all is well!

btw, dolphlvr, which Tides is 1.5 credits, I thought they were all 1 credit?

Business TIDES are 1.5 credits. Not sure why, but they are.

Thanks!

Yep he’s in the Law & Order TIDES and it’s under the Business program.

The Business TIDES are also two semesters. Didn’t know that. He considered switching out to non Business TIDES but decided to stick with it.

If he plans to be in the business school, then they are required to take business tides. They are a bit more work than some of the tides classes from what I understand but I think it’s a good intro to the bschool and their classmates who intend to go that route.

dolphnlvr6 - I got a similar message from my son on texting even though I kept my text messages to books, accounts, mail stuff. Guess he figured I was still not cutting the strings yet! Either way he said he enjoyed his first week most classes are easy except Latin 30xx? He said it requires way more work than he is willing to put in during his first semester while trying to navigate everything else (clubs, dorm, roommates, “social life”, class locations) so he decided to drop. He had a hard time getting another class so he will be down to 14.5 hours this semester. This may be fine as he can spend more time adjusting and starting off with solid grades. From the limited conversation we had I would give the first week two thumbs up.

My son (a sophomore) couldn’t get tickets to the first football game either, so the new stadium is, I guess, popular for now.

He’s enjoying classes and his much nicer dorm (Soho versus Butler). He still loves Tulane!

Always good to hear, @newtrierdad! (Not about the lack of tickets, but the rest). For sure SOHO is WAYYYYY nicer than Butler.
