First generation american

Does being a first generation American of two immigrants help you chances of getting in to college? For some background knowledge, both my parents are from Germany, they moved here in their 20’s. Our family has had trouble with immigration issues most of life and we had to go to court to testify why we had to stay. I myself at age 8 had to speak in the court as to why my family should stay in America. Luckily we won. Would it helped if I included this in my college application?

Just being a first generation American would not help at all, but your family story may help you to write an interesting essay.

Agree^^. Grades, Standarized tests, Essays, EC, and more speak louder than being a first generation American. For the Essay, Try to write something you will like them to know and make it unique. Best of Luck!

It may or may not be a deciding factor under any circumstance.

But remember that college admissions officers aren’t trying to find things to reject you. They’re trying to look at you in the best light to move you up in the admissions process.

Best of luck!

Even if it did, I don’t think coming from Germany is going to give you any leverage, unless you were escaping the Nazis in the 1940’s.

First generation will definitely give you an “advantage” as your parents didn’t go to college, so they have less educational background to help with your academic endeavors.
Mention them only if you feel like you learned something out of it, or if the event has shaped who you are today.

1/8 of the US population is foreign born. It isn’t all that unusual, but then again it wouldn’t hurt to mention it.

@rdeng2614 I think the OP was speaking specifically about being first generation in the US, not first gen in college. You are right that some schools give a tip to first gen college students.

Did your parents graduate from college?

my dad only has high school and mom is currently in college

So you’re first-gen (neither parent graduated from a 4-year college). Some universities take that into account.

The highly competitive colleges for the most part.
