First Generation college students

Does being a first generation college student help your chances of being accepted into colleges?(esp. state colleges) I am an only child, and neither of my parents attended college.

From what I understand, being a first year college applicant doesn’t add weight or take weight from your transcript/ application. In any case, it would help you get more FINaid or money toward schools.

State colleges, by and large, admit solely on metrics (GPA, SATs). A factor such as being 1st generation would only be evaluated in scenarios where an admissions committee admits by holistic factors.

The answer is: for you, it won’t be any tip

it helps when applying to uc’s and privates. You can say something about you being the first in your family to go to college in your personal statement.

Depends on the school. Some state schools do give points for first gen, I know some UCs do but you need to check school by school. The biggest advantage is at elite schools that have traditionally had few first gen/low income students.
