FIRST language: what does that mean, really?

On the common app, as well as many other college apps, there is a section that asks what your first language is. Does that mean first as in chronological order? Which language did I learn first? (I was born in Korea and lived there til I was 5. I still speak Korean at home and can read/write fluently.) Or does that mean what language I use most easily now? (That would most definitely be English.) Thanks a bunch!!

chronological, i'd say :) you learned korean first in your life, then english came later.

I put down English, even though the first language that I learned was Russian...the way I interpreted the question was that they wanted to know which language (and language group) you wanted to be associated with.

First language means the first language that you learned chronologically. I would definitely put Korean.

first language means first language. as in, "what was the first language you spoke?" i mean, come on. :)

hahaha okay, good. thanks for your help! :D

no problem

Yeah, I learned French first so I put that, even though I hardly use it, even at home.

Go for it, you have skills, tell them! :)
