Ok so I received my tuition bill for the fall semester, and the payment is due on August 1st. I was wondering how I can apply for subsidized loans such as Perkins or Stafford loans, because I've tried finding applications online, but no luck so far. I have already filed the FAFSA and am receiving a generous financial aid award, but I still have some money left to pay.

Another question: Are there any private loans where interest doesn't accrue during the school year? I've looked at Wells Fargo, Citi Bank...etc, but it seems that the interest does begin accruing during the school year.

If you applied for FAFSA, then that’s how you get Stafford Direct loans.

Are your sure that you don’t ALREADY have Direct loans in your FA package? If you already have these loans (totally $5500), then that’s all you can get.

If you don’t have any loans in your FA pkg, then call your school and ask them to add $5500 Direct loans to your FA pkg, but only about $3500 will be subsidized.

You don’t “apply” for Perkins loans. Those are awarded by the school to meet need, but there’s no guarantee of them.

It sounds like you’re trying to cover “family contribution”. If so, those loans will not be subsidized.

What school is this?

As for private loans, you’ll need qualified co-signers.

What is in your FA pkg? Are you looking for loans to cover the “student contribution”…or the parent contribution.

Well the school I’ll be attending is Yale and in my FA package, only the Federal Pell Grant, SEOG Grant, and Yale grant are included. The tuition bill doesn’t state anything about receiving the loans that you mentioned. I’m looking for loans to cover the student contribution portion of the FA package, since Yale has covered everything else.

Since I’m trying to cover the student contribution portion does that mean the federal perkins and stafford loans will not be subsidized?

I’m confused. Yale is one of the hyper-generous schools and shouldn’t have left someone getting a Pell Grant with much of any “student contribution.” What is the amount you’re being asked to pay?

That said, you are entitled to $5,500 in Stafford loans - call the FA office and they’ll add it to your package.

Well Yale was very generous lol, but they had to take some of my assets that were saved up which weren’t much, but I want the loan to also cover summer contribution and work-study portion of the FA package. Therefore I need a loan for about $5000 for the year, and i was wondering if I could get a federal subsidized loan to cover that portion of the student contribution.

You need to call the school and ask for the loans. they may not be subsidized. Maybe the amount that will cover the work study would be, but not the amount that covers the student contribution.

Why aren’t you doing the work study?

Alright, thanks. Well, I’ll probably still do work study, but the money will probably serve for my personal expenses really.

You won’t be given loans in excess of COA.

How much is the student contribution?

If you take work study, then the only loan amount will be the student contribution amount.
