First time taking AP class, how should I handle it?

-How to prepare for tests?
-homework? When was the best time for you to do your homework?
-Is it possible to study or stay 'ahead' of class? (Asking this since there will be lotsbof homework and want to know if there's a way one can study even more)
-Any other tips would be GREAT!!!

If you focus and set a definite goal for yourself, you will do amazing. For me I just went over class notes as preparation for the test, and if I needed more explanation I would use my Barron’s book. Also, if you can, you should get a Barron’s book or any form of study book. This is not only a good tool to prepare for the AP test in May when “some of your key note are missing…” but it will also do a great job in helping you get ahead. You have all the chapters and units explained in a study book so that way you can just slip ahead to the new Unit in your spare time. Homework is an absolute crap shoot. For something like Statistics, I never had homework. But US History? The sheer amount of work was something. Usually I started my homework two hours after I got home from school and football practice. I needed time to just chill and eat or sometimes even sleep. The horror stories of AP classes are made up. If you have a good drive and motivation, and you are willing to learn, you will do excellent :)

Thanks for the great insight!!! I sure will keep a Barrons book in hand

What AP class are you taking? In most AP classes you don’t get much homework because they expect you to be reading/outlining in the textbook for the chapter quizzes/tests. My best advice is to keep on schedule and outline before the test, giving yourself enough time to study your outline. Ultimately, don’t freak or stress yourself out too much. AP classes should help, not hurt. And remember that when you take your AP exams in May that they do not count for anything besides a college credit!

How to prepare for tests?
Reading through the chapters in the book, if the teacher doesn’t assign any note-like assignments, you should definitely take some nice notes to refer to when it comes to reviewing the chapter. Another thing you can do is use Quizlet.com to make online flashcards. It’s a really nice way to study material because it allows you to test yourself in multiple formats. A lot of people actually publicly share their Quizlet flash cards, so for instance, today I had a test on the characters of the book “Girl in Hyacinth Blue,” so I Googled “Girl in Hyacinth Blue Character Quizlet.” There are plenty of other online resources like Quizlet that are useful.

Homework? When was the best time for you to do your homework?
The homework load really depends on the teacher and the class. As for when you do your homework, home is generally the best place. Being honest though, it’s not uncommon for me to finish homework up on the bus, before the bell rings in the morning, or during lunch.

Is it possible to study or stay ‘ahead’ of class?
It depends on the teacher. A lot of teachers give the same assignments for each of the chapter, like outlines, breakdowns, thematic charts, document analysis, etc. If your teacher is pretty regular about certain types of assignments, you should be able to stay ahead. As for studying ahead, you can easily ask what will be covered next and class, and look at the material ahead of time.

Any other tips would be GREAT!!!
AP classes are generally harder than other classes, but honestly, if you participate, study, and do your work, you should be fine. I think it’s great that you’re trying to find out more in preparation of the class. You obviously care a lot. If you handle the class with that motivation and determination, you’ll do great.
