First Year Seminar Suggestions

I’m looking over the list of first year seminars. Just wondering if anyone has a suggestion or two regarding a good seminar to take. The Secret and Lies seminar with Austin Sarat looks interesting, as does Slavery and the American Imagination with Hilary Moss. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!!!

Generally, the professor is a more important determinant of how much you will enjoy the class than the subject matter. This applies to pretty much any class you’ll ever take, but it’s especially true for first year seminars, which usually cover a really wide range of stuff. I would research the professors who are teaching the seminars and base your choices primarily on their quality. Good places to research are current students (if you did an overnight, your host might be willing to give you their thoughts) and scrutiny, although you should keep in mind that different people like different styles, so take everything you hear with an appropriate portion of salt.

I don’t know anything about professor Moss, but I will warn you that Sarat’s seminar is usually very popular, so don’t count on getting in even if it’s your first choice. I’ve heard good things about it, though. Looking over the list, I’m actually not that familiar with a lot of the professors. The one I’d put forward is War with Servos and Sweeney. Everyone I’ve talked to who’s taken classes with them says they are great.

Thanks for the info, catfish!
