Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Easy day today, but I am bummed. I went for a walk. I checked my phone toward the end and DH has been calling me. He thought we had a ghostly experience at home. He was in the bathroom when a door just started banging slowing like a cat was playing with it. But then he saw the usual cat offended crouched under the bed. And the banging got louder and faster and more doors started doing the same thing. Long story short - an earthquake about 100 miles from here. We aren’t used to such things. But I missed it all!! Boo. I missed the last one too.

Wow @ClassicMom98 !

I usually attend a yoga class on Sunday afternoon (virtual for now), but I was able to do an outside class this morning. One of the women in our larger group of runners recently finished teacher training so she is leading free classes for our group in a nearby park. I really enjoyed practicing outside (it was a beautiful morning). It was also nice to practice with a different teacher since every teacher’s style is a bit different. Bonus was seeing 8 women I haven’t seen for awhile. We social distanced and wore masks. A few minutes into the practice I forgot I was even wearing a mask.

Took a walk with H later in the morning.

Ran about 4.5 and then swam 2700m. Surprisingly good run. It was hot, but overcast and breezy. Swam more than I intended, too. Sunday used to be an easy, social swim day. Think kicking with kickboards and chatting for a long warm up. With social distancing we do more swimming. Still the morning started light, taking underwater pictures just because we could before the workout.

Rode bikes 40 miles, and we weren’t tired afterwards. It wasn’t terribly hot or humid, which made for a nice ride.

@1214mom

So, how long does 40 miles take you, usually?

When we hike, it’s about 3 miles per hour. Plus bathroom & lunch breaks.

A big time commitment!

On Saturday I didn’t run. Instead I did a walk with husband and two gardening sessions. But on Sunday I did an early run …back up to my normal 5k distance at the lake trail. My time was horrible, only a tad faster than my first and only 5k race in April 2017, which had included a few minutes of walking. Nonetheless I consider it a victory after the few months without running until this week.

@midwest67, it took us a total of about 3.5 hours, including 3 potty stops, a 10-15 minute break at one end, and maybe another water stop. We were on a “gravely path” and probably rode about 12 MPH one way (a long very gradual hill over 4 miles), but much quicker the other way. I think we rode 20 minutes quicker coming back. It is a big time commitment, especially because we had to drive 35 minutes to the start.
I prefer to ride for food or entertainment, but COVID has made that hard.

My wrist keeps bothering me so I have been only doing weights and riding my stationary bike. Today, I rode while watching the Spurs and was so distracted that I rode for much longer than anticipated. I think I’ll keep doing that, plus weights and core to see how that feels.

For a Monday morning, this wasn’t a bad one. I’d give my run 5 out of 10 stars! Video of the day was circuit Chest & Tris. I was nervous for this because I knew it would be hard. And it was, but I pushed myself hard. The downside to pushing the circuit part hard is that you are toast for the burnout. 3 sets of 30 sec regular push-ups/30 sec tricep push-ups with 30 sec rest between sets. No biggie if it’s the first part or middle of the workout, but when you have a hard time even holding a plank, push-ups were more than tough. Still, it was a good sign that I worked hard. Finished with core.

Another 8-1 day today and Friday! one small benefit of the pandemic. I’m at use or lose since there’s nowhere to go. 20 hours/month and I also still have the Juneteenth floating holiday I need to use sometime by Dec 31.

A swim and a walk. The swim was light. We practiced diving! Good thing no one was in the gym to watch.

Thought about our protein discussions here this morning. I don’t do supplements or anything. But made a good protein rich breakfast this morning using Kodiak pancake mix.
Kodiak mix, milk, egg (all 3 with protein)
Mashed banana
Vanilla
Dash of honey
Mini chocolate chips
Butter for frying
Topped with peanut butter (protein) and sliced almonds

One medium sized pancake kept me satisfied all morning! Along with an iced matcha.

I’ve made the choice to recommit to getting some exercise in daily. I’m giving myself permission to start slow. I’ve gotten a good walk in 3 out of 4 of the past days. Today I was listening to a good podcast so walk an additional time up a steep hill so I could listen more.
I’m tentatively going to try the gym class tomorrow. I haven’t gone much of anywhere but the market so hitting the gym will be outside my comfort Covid zone. They are only allowed to be open outside and I know I can leave if I don’t feel comfortable.

@mom60, you’ve thought this through! That’s an important step!

Congrats on the 3 walks. Report back on the gym experience. Report back on everything!!

You got this, @mom60 !

Runners - What stretching do you do before and/or afterward?

@colorado_mom Stretching. In the old days - none. Up and out the door in 5 minutes, finish and go immediately into lifting. The older I got, the more I did. At 40, I took up yoga and learned just how inflexible I am in places I never even realized.

So now… I spent 10-15 min in bed doing some light stretches - pull knee into chest, half happy baby, reclined pigeon (while massaging my calves/feet), and a weird side calf stretch. Then I get dressed, head downstairs and do more dynamic stretching depending on what I feel like i need the most. Hip flexors, quads, hamstrings (especially where I cross my feet and bend over), deep squat practice. I always do a long ITB band stretch for 60-90 sec each side. (that’s not dynamic like most I do) I also warm-up/stretch my shoulders, triceps, and chest. I also do this weird hip stabilization thing against the wall. Yeah, all of this takes me awhile - about 45 min from the time my alarm goes off until I’m out the door.

After I finish I do longer holds, sit cross legged/lean forward, lie on my back with a towel on my foot for the hamstring and also ITB (cross leg) and inner groin (leg out to side). I also do a hip flexor stretches. Then I’m ready to lift!

And when kids aren’t around, I try to stretch at night while watching TV. If the kids are watching too, I usually skip it.

One would think doing all of this every day that I would be flexible. HA!!! I’m below average at best. Dismal at many of them still. I wish I had started in my teens or 20s. I wonder what I’d be like now. I certainly couldn’t be worse.

Today was alright. Drove to the gym, walk/ran a w/u for 15 min and then hopped on the bike for an hour. My legs didn’t have a lot of oomph, but I was proud I stayed on the entire time. I wanted to quit at 12 minutes. Then back home I did back/bis 50-50. The lifting portion flew by. The HIIT portion is always hard, but it was over pretty quickly as well. I finished with some core.

And a big sigh of relief. Older S started work yesterday. He was hired last December with a start date of Aug. 10th. In the financial industry, in this climate, I was just waiting for bad news to drop. He seems very excited about what he will be doing, and I must say it sounds right up his alley. So very, very relieved am I. One kid down, one to go…

@ClassicMom98 great news for your son. I keep my fingers crossed that my kids stay employed.
Went to the gym for a class, first time back since March. The parking lot was basically empty. Check in including temperature taking was done outside. They have set up the class area on a patio that is open on all sides but one.Spaced our dots on the ground for a total of 12 spots. Masks worn until you have your mat setup. Plenty of wipes and hand sanitizer for the weights. There were just 6 of us which was nice. It was wonderful to see some of my gym mates and the instructor. I think a lot of people don’t know she is back teaching yet and I think it will get full once the word gets out. Prior to Covid we sometimes had 40 people in class. I felt that the risks were minimal. I’m looking forward to Thursday. It also will be great to get back into somewhat of a normal routine.

@ClassicMom98 - Yay for your son!

@colorado_mom - I stretch a bit every morning, and do squats while brushing my teeth. Just a few active stitches before a run like butt kicks, high knees, etc. I do have a regular (3x/weeks) yoga practice and I think it’s a great cross train for runners. Lots of things like hip openers, lunges, etc.

I had a crappy day in the home gym!

I was supposed to nail 77# for 2 triples in the press, having done doubles the week before.

No go. I hit 1 + F and 1 + F then did four more singles.

Going backwards!

Volume bench was fine, but the lay back in the press and arch in the bench aggravates something in my back.

I skipped LTEs & curls partly out of disgust and partly because I felt on E.

I’m eating and eating and will go to bed early tonight.

Days like this I wish I had a coach and/or a training partner!
