@ClassicMom98, I still remember many a hike or bike ride when my kids were younger and unhappy.
Now they are both into biking and happy to hike when they have a chance also.
They are also both into lifting weights, especially my older son. He was in amazing shape at some point, but I suspect work and COVID have impacted his workout time.
@Lizardly I assumed you were always a swimmer! I’m impressed!
I am not very good about videotaping my press sets and I don’t have a good explanation for why that is.
Hoo boy. Today I made sure to videotape all four sets of five “light” presses (66#).
I’ve got a lot of work to do (technique, form, control, less wobble).
I was re-listening to a podcast and the host said the press (standing overhead) is the most technical of the main lifts (bench, press, squat, deadlift) and if you don’t have that bar path and groove down tight, the bar is not gonna go.
Truth.
I am stuck at 110# for bench. I did one triple, but could not do two.
I did three sets of four solid controlled chins. Elbows not too pleased, but I was.
In other news, a Starting Strength coach, Chase Lindley, pulled 700# today. I forget which SS gym he is at in Texas. IIRC, he weighs in the mid-200s. Anyways, the video of the PR was on IG and he was SO HAPPY. He could play a viking in the movies. Beast.
Yesterday instead of running, I joined DH for a daytrip in Rocky Mountain National Park… lovely. At our first stop (slow hike - he mostly takes photos) I enjoyed grand scenery and privacy - we rarely needed our masks. Darn, did have to wear my mask on the popular stepped trail atop Trail Ridge Road (12,000 feet).
Then today back to my normal 5k on the lake trail, still at a slow pace as I get back in the groove … but pleased to only need one short walking break (which I could skip, but I like to slow down when I pull out my small water bottle).
RMNP is one of my favorite places on Earth!
I am in awe of those of you who work out in the heat. It’s been abnormally hot in my area. My body is used to exercising in the mid 60’s to low 70 degree range most of the year. This week it’s been in the 80’s and humid and I can’t deal with it. I know I shouldn’t complain about that temp but after 40 years of living on the coast at an average of 70 degrees most of the year my body doesn’t adjust well to heat.
@Lizardly you are inspiring. I didn’t learn to swim as a kid beyond a dog paddle and swimming underwater. I’ve spent my adult life near the ocean and pool but I’ve never progressed beyond swim well enough to not drown. I keep telling myself I should take some lessons.
@ClassicMom98 - I so agree with wanting my kids to be active. Both of mine run but neither of them love it, they prefer classes at their respective gyms. Also, both live in urban areas and walk a lot.
Today’s run was 8 miles, my actual distance was 8.34 and I was pleased with my pace. There were 6 of us and there was some concern for awhile as we lost track of one of our friends. I was in a group of 3 out front and we thought she was with the group of 2 in the back and vice versa! I ran back to the car solo, so I could drive around and look while the others turned around and headed back on foot to search. Got a text as soon as I reached the car that she was found. Turned out she was behind us a ways all the time. Whew!
@mom60 Do it!
Swimming is taught in a different way from when we were young. There is more emphasis on body position and feeling comfortable, not out of breath, while swimming. You might like it.
I like to learn new things, even at my age, but the main draw of swimming has been that it feels good, restorative. Sure there are days when I don’t want to take off my clothes, confront my chubby self in a bathing suit, and drop myself in the water,. but I always feel good within a few minutes. I enjoy swimming alone and feeling the water and being buoyant and I like swimming in my group and hanging out with like minded (fitness minded) people.
It’s fun to do something new at our age—look at @Midwest67 and weight training.
@mom60 oh yes. Please whine about heat and humidity, so I don’t feel so lonesome and wimpy. It never gets better for me. Some day I’ll just dissolve into a puddle of goo on the floor.
@FallGirl neither of my kids will be crazy runners, but older S will run 3-5 miles 3-4 times a week. But the. He has no issues doing zero running for several months. He actually joined a new men’s running group on a Tuesday. From what I gather, it’s very recreational. Just a way for some guys to get together and meet people and be active during the pandemic.
@Lizardly I’m impressed with your swimming! That’s not an easy skill to learn later in life. My new activity would be yoga. It gives me fun things to try and improve at, since my main activities are all about trying not to slide down too fast. I peaked long ago in those I’m afraid.
Today was storming, so I did my cardio at the gym. The stairmonster went well. 50 solid minutes followed by 20 rather weak minutes on the bike. I was so sweaty I made a large puddle of water around the bike despite the giant fan overhead. I spend a LONG time wiping my equipment down. 3 large things of paper towels and I just bring the cleaner bottle with me. And wipe that down after as well.
After, I went home and did Barre Blend legs. It was ok. I’m REALLY terrible at it, but I accept that. Nobody has to see me. I can only get better, right? Then I did some core and the happy part was I tried a flying pigeon. I haven’t done one in awhile and it might have been my best one ever. No grunting, tugging, etc trying to get my leg in place, got balanced quickly, had tons of control extending my leg very straight and held it for a good while. Maybe this dance stuff is helping. Lol.
@Midwest67 I’m so happy I cannot squat 882 lbs. The guy fractured both knees. Wow.

I’m not even clicking on the link bc I’m squeamish about injuries. It makes my stomach do a little flip flop just IMAGINING it!
OMG
Yes, this is why I thought I might take some lessons. It seems like a lot of things are taught better than when we were young! My childhood swimming lessons involved getting yelled at a lot for being scared! Then I would show up for the next lesson scared of being yelled at…part of why I failed beginners level swimming year after year even though I loved going to the beach and playing in the ocean. Eventually I learned how to swim reasonably well but I would like to really learn how to be more efficient, how to do it without always being out of breath, how to go a bit faster, etc.
I have been doing quite well with exercising while stuck at home. It’s one thing that I feel like I have some control over. Also, it’s one thing that still feels at least partially social even though it is over zoom. Rowing machine, functional movement class with balance and strength, lots of core work. I’m seeing progress. I’m just so glad we can do zoom classes even if we can’t go to the gym.
Got 26 miles in biking today. Tomorrow it looks like I will be back on the indoor bike.
Yesterday, my workout was completed in 100 degree weather. Today, it cooled down to 97 with a slight breeze. I love warm weather workouts and I had lots of company both days. Tomorrow is a run day.
Many of the new members say “bro” a lot.
10k of running plus a cool down walk, then some swimming in the big pool. It is super hot in south Texas and pool space is a at a premium.
I got at least 90 minutes in on the indoor bike, maybe more. I lost track of time and got interrupted by the husband to help with something at some point.
Yoga class (flow) for 90 minutes. Studio is opening again inside next week–only 6 people in a class. Not ready to go inside yet. Inside classes will also be virtual, for which I’m grateful.
@sushiritto I don’t know how you exercise in that weather. My nor cal kid has been going to ride her horse at 6 am and she said it’s still really hot.
It’s going to be hot and humid this week and I’m already dreading the thought of exercising in this weather. How do you exercise in the heat without feeling nauseous? My class is outside and they have put up a few sun shades but I feel it only minimally helps. The good thing is that after only two classes I can really feel it in every ab muscle.
@Lizardly when the pool at the gym reopens I’m going to inquire about adult lessons. The pool is indoor and all indoor gyms are presently closed. Did you do private lessons? I hopefully will go on a sailing trip next May and I have a goal to be a stronger swimmer by that point. I have a pool at home but I don’t know where to start. I have an idea about strokes but I am weak with the breathing and I know my middle back sways and sinks!
Today is just puttering and relaxing day. So far I have not even walked, concerned about smoke warnings (lots of wildfires, far away but smoke travels with the winds).
In the grand scheme of things, getting the house first-pass decluttered is a huge priority… and will be good for my mental health. I procrastinated on that kind of thing the last years due to stressful work (before retiring a few weeks ago). And now there is also A LOT of stuff from my mom’s apartment that I brought over before and after she passed away. Yesterday I was so proud of my pantry reorg that I sent my daughter a photo to show it … “Bet you did not know what the pantry floor looks like”.
