Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

@mom60 For some reason, I do well with warm weather workouts. OTOH, I cannot stand cold weather workouts. I’ve mentioned this before, but when the temps run below 60 degrees, I just don’t do nearly as well.

Last night, we had a very rare thunderstorm. The constant lightning and thunder in the middle of the night scared our dog enough to hide under the covers. I went out to the Bay for my Sunday run today and while the temp was 84 degrees at the time near the Bay, the really odd humidity made the run far more difficult.

One of the attractive attributes of living in the SF Bay Area, maybe a 25-30 mins to the ocean, is the lack of humidity. I don’t know how those folks deal with the high humidity in those locations where it’s just part of daily life.

Oh, 5-mile run and then went to the gym for 100 GHD sit-ups.

@sushiritto, one of the things I miss most about that area is the weather. I am “shocked” it rained in August.
Have you said what city you live in? I was born in San Rafael, but spent most of my 1st 13 years in the South Bay Area. I’ve been gone over 40 years, but I still consider myself a California girl.
Totally irrelevant to workouts - my cousin was a big DJ at one of the SF stations and is now a program manager. He also did well with real estate out there. He has done very well for himself, with no college degree.

@1214mom I spent many years living in SF, but moved down to the Peninsula. I’m in the general vicinity of Stanford.

@sushiritto, I was poor growing up, but my mom worked right across the street from Stanford. I thought that’s where I’d go for college (it was probably the only college I knew of). Of course as I got older and moved away from there, I realized that wasn’t going to happen.

@mom60 I did not but I recommend it. I asked the masters coach whether she thought I should start swimming with them straight away or prepare first and she told me to go for it. I swam in the slow lane. The group does lots of skill building drills and I got lots of feedback. Taking lessons would have been faster and more straight forward, but I muddled through.

For a Monday, it wasn’t so bad. My run, however, was full of issues in the beginning. My tile kept setting off my phone - my phone stuck in a plastic bag in the back of my fuel belt. I had to stop every 30 sec for awhile to stop the phone from singing. After the 3rd time, I got smart and adjusted my keys in the front of my fuel belt. but then I knocked something on my shuffle and it stopped working. I think the headphones are shorting out (i hope). And then once i got going, I needed an emergency p-stop and that meant deviating from my planned course by 0.75 miles (each way). Ugh. I wound up ditching the planned route and just meandered around town. All things considered it wasn’t terrible. I just hope I can get my shuffle working. My cell phone is about to die too. It won’t charge very well. I tried cleaning out the port, but it’s still not working well. I think I just sweat too much on it, but it will also be 4 years old at Thanksgiving.

My lifting portion went VERY well. chest/tris 50-50. I bumped up to 40s for my rotating chest press and it seemed easy for 10 reps. And then for the regular chest press - which was at the end of the workout this time, I still used the 40s for sets of 14 reps. The HIIT portion was OK and I finished with some core.

I was in such a foul mood this morning and had to delay my usual 11 a.m. workout. So happy and full of endorphins. Man, I would be a mess without a regular workout.

The weather can’t seem to decide if it’s goin to be sunny or not, and I simply don’t feel like doing the indoor bike, so I’m just do exercised on my yoga mat and stretches. Seems like better than nothing.

I ran this morning, but not quite early enough. It seems the whole high school cross country team was training today on “my” trail (which does have a few runners and bikers, but mostly walkers). DANG - those young-ins run fast! (I was happy though that one pair of girls that whizzed past me later were just a bit ahead of me… they must have needed a walking break?)

Another day where I didn’t feel half bad. For August, this is a rare gift and I am thankful. I took a slightly longer way to the gym (as in 4 min longer), then 35 min of strong stairmonster, then run back home. Video of the day was back/bis circuit, and I finished with some core. 2 days down!

4.1 miles this morning and my ankle felt good. Counting my blessings on a hot day.

I did about a 4 mile walk this evening. It’s beautiful out.
I also did some arm and other exercises.

Good morning & rotten day at work so far. I did a longer aerobic session. Ran to the gym, then did the 5K route around the gym in 22 min. (That’s a lot faster than I’ve been running!) Then I hopped on the bike in the gym and rode for 30 min (masked) and then ran back home. Video of the day was Week 5 of Barre Blend Total Body. She upped the time by 5 minutes which meant she came up with all these new moves that made me look like an idiot. I just can’t follow dance stuff. My arms and legs are moving in all the wrong directions all of the time. LOL. But it’s good for me, right?

And then I get to work and situation after situation is just I need to breathe! Younger S is leaving for school today. I hope he leaves while I’m at lunch and can see him off. We will likely go up this weekend and deliver whatever can’t fit in his car.

The weather here in Chicagoland is SPECTACULAR. Although don’t think I haven’t noticed the days getting shorter!

I have neglected to film my presses and it seems I’ve let some major form creep set in. I do not have good form or good control of the bar – and no surprise it gets worse as the weight on the bar goes up. Gotta work on that.

My online workout today was awesome. They aren’t always homeruns, but I loved today’s.

I enjoyed reading this article by Rebecca Fishburne about pitching barbell training to reluctant female novices.

I’ve heard her on the FiveX3 podcast and she sounds like a great coach.

I had a good workout this morning, but nothing too exciting. Run then lift shoulders - circuit style. The two heavy exercises were in the first grouping, so it got easier after that. Finished with some core and then did a “quick elephant trunk to 8 angle pose” progression. And now I am REALLY sleepy. I hope I can nap at lunch.

I’m planning on a strength training and core workout class later this morning at the gym. Weather is hot and humid and air quality isn’t great. Some smoke in the air from fires and class is outdoors so I’ll see how it feels.

Since buying barbells in today’s market is proving extremely difficult, my gym asked me if I’d sell them a couple of my used Rogue barbells. I have 3 at home (including the pink one) and my orange one I leave at the gym.

So, today I’m selling them a couple of my older barbells. With the influx of new members, most of them appear to be female too, barbells are in high demand at the gym. A popular gym implement.

I had to dial back my workout yesterday, since due to the lighting and thunderstorms this past Sunday morning, we’ve had a bunch of wildfires in the North and East Bay’s and the air quality was unhealthy. Today is better.

Today is a rest/recovery day, but since I have to go to the gym for the sale of my barbells anyway, I may squeeze in a light workout.

@sushiritto

I have a low quality crappy bar I could sell, and some iron plates I’ll never use. Good reminder to get those on Craigslist while the market is hot!
