Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

I thought I felt good today getting out of bed. My shoulder is slightly sore still, but everything else felt great. I couldn’t mentally face the wind, so I slunk to the gym and found that my well was dry. It felt like someone turned up the stairmonster/bike 3 levels and I was stuck in a time warp. Ugh. Could be PMS too I suppose. My mood is cranky, especially as I was driving home NOT looking forward to working out in the 32* shed and something got stuck/irritated my eye turning it all red. Grumble. Worked it out and got to work. Video was Insanity Max 30’s Tabata Power Intervals followed by a nice relaxing Range and Repair from The Work focusing on the spine/shoulders. I would like to try the Tabata workout again when I have more oomph. It was a lot of fun and I surprisingly did OK with most of it - except for power jumps. I’m terrible at those. But I was happy I got it done and didn’t quit. The rest of my day should be much easier and sedentary

@HMom16 – The Wii Fit Age at the end of the tests seems just short of random to me. I really enjoy the balance activities.

No soccer last night because the fields were closed due to the snow/ice, so we did one of our regular loops.

This AM we did 4 miles (3 there/1 home) to get get out the way of the cleaning lady

Yes, totally random! Last night my Wii Fit Age was 15 years younger

OK, y’all, I’m about to embark on the 10k step challenge video. I’ll report back how many steps I register.

Thanks for posting the indoor 10k - looking for something indoor and manageable! LOL

I wonder if that’s to get you hooked. “look at how much you improved in just one day!”

Mea culpa to @abasket That was NOT 10k steps.

First, know that I am using dh’s old Garmin, and it doesn’t record well. That’s one reason I’m looking at a new Apple watch. That said, the woman on the video reveals that she only got 4k steps in that 32 minutes. For some reason, I was 300 steps behind her, but I chalk that up to this old watch. I made sure to match her stride for stride.

At the end, she says you can do the video twice if you want, and she “challenges” you to hit 10k by getting outside and going about your day. Um, OK.

Having said that, I definitely am sweaty, and my BPMs got up to the mid-140s, which is good exertion for me at 58yo. She gives ways to increase the workout (lunges vs stepbacks, for instance), but she doesn’t give tips on good form. I could see someone who’s new not doing the modifications well and potentially tweaking their knees. And for a lot of this you could use weights to add overload.

I definitely would do this again for a short cardio workout. I start hurting if I ride the stationary bike while watching TV for too long.

I’m sure it was still a good workout, but 10K steps in 30 min is a bit much. A normal running stride rate is 180 steps/minute. That’s supposed to hold true for all speeds. I am a loper and tend to run at 165-170 steps/min. In any case, that would be 10,000 +/- in an hour, not 30 minutes. You’d need to be really hammering it fast for 60 min to get 10K in 30 minutes!

but again, I’m sure it was a good workout for 30 minutes, especially if you’re stuck at home or want something different.

:sunny: and 36 and I was able to take a break from WFH today and run 3 miles. With snow on the ground and lots of ice on sidewalks and roads I am thankful for a trail a block from my house that was bone dry.

I credit the 10k steps/day goal with getting me moving years ago (when I used a pocket pedometer)… a healthy thing when I was spending soooo much time at a desk job. Of course readings were not always right - one time I went to a 1 hours step class and was annoyed to have only recorded 500 steps. But it was a good reminder to take a walk, especially when working from home with under 1000 steps (once only 200) by 5pm.

Interesting article about history of the 10k/day recommendation (it is geared more toward non-exercisers than the light/heavy exercisers in this group) - Why you should think about tossing your 10k-step goal out the window

When I hear of stories like yours @Colorado_mom (and I’ve heard many!) of people who literally track less than 1K steps per day - like you said, perhaps only a couple of hundred - and are otherwise mobile I am shocked. Day after day you can see how that becomes a physical issue.

I totally relate to @Colorado_mom. On days I don’t work out what with the pandemic I sometimes get shockingly few steps in.

I am another fewer than a couple thousand steps person when I don’t go out for a walk. More so working from home than when I used to go to the office.

I’ve had low energy last few days, a few days with no exercise, stayed in bed late today. I did get out for my walk and one set of my step ups. It took a mental push to get it done.

Weight has been steady which is pretty much my goal, food choices have not been that great.

It will be a push to get to my 50k distance in pokemon go this week.

Yes, as abasket says nonactivity can be bad for physical health.

At one point when I worked mostly at home in 2015, sometimes stressed 12+ hours at a desk, it resulted in knee issues. There was even pain just bending my knees in bed. Fearing arthritis, I made an appointment for a physical. But the pain went away on its own after I told my manager I’d be unable to continue some very intense extra work (with no synergy with my normal work) that had been assigned to me after layoffs 6 months earlier. It was bad for my job security (the next year I was on the layoff list myself until I found a new position), but I had to do it for health reasons.

Include me in the <2K (and maybe less than 1K) steps club on days that I don’t do some other form of exercise. It is definitely lower when I’m working for home.

With Covid I am often under 10k steps a day if I don’t go for a run. Before Covid, I was always way over 10k. I can do so much from home, sitting on the couch now. Curbside pick up for groceries and food, no shopping, no live school/work. Heck, I used to drive somewhere, park, and then walk half a mile to my destination in these big Texas parking lots.

I hope I didn’t offend anyone saying I was shocked at those who have very low step counts. I didn’t intent to!

I think I’ve always been very active if not exercising so I don’t spend much time in sit mode - hardly ever. Clearly I sit at my desk but I have always made it a point to get up and move around, do a standing task, go out in the yard and walk around - whatever.

And good point about COVID times and people spending more time between those 4 walls of home. I guess it’s a helpful thing that I live in a two story home with a basement - always up and down those stairs!!

I consider myself pretty sedentary outside of exercise, but I usually get in a few thousand. At work it’s easier because my office chair is 1/4 mile from the parking lot. Leaving for lunch, that’s 1 mile right there, and now that I eat my breaks outside in my car, that’s another 1 mile. And H usually drags me to Walmart, Target, etc. at some point. Those are usually good for 1000 steps. I know my ultimate low day was knee surgery day where I only had 500. Of course, the next day H refused to take the kids to the outlets for Black Friday shopping unless I went along. I had plenty that day. Yes, one day post knee (meniscus) surgery. The following day he thought I should be able to help reset a panel fence. Uh no. That’s why I had 2 boys.

Today was much better than the previous 2! I did the same run as Tuesday and it was 4 minutes faster. I was not crazy about the video of the day. It was called “Speed 4.0” but it seemed to have a lot of dance like moves. This old lady doesn’t dance. I tried hard and parts were hard - lots of burpee like moves in there too - but since I couldn’t get the coordination down, I felt like I missed out. Finished with some core and yoga to stretch it out.

And I meant to this to be a regular reply - not a reply to abasket

I was so focused on the yoga challenge (30 days of yoga, meditation, and clean eating) that I did with my studio last month that I didn’t even pay attention to steps. I looked back and saw that unless I went out and walked, I didn’t get to 10K steps. Before Covid, I did because I went to more places and did more outside. I need to make a conscious effort to get outside more and just walk down the street. I live in an area with no sidewalks but the bike path is just .4 miles. That’s going to be my goal for the rest of the month–not giving up yoga but going to work on more walking to increase my steps.

Talking about steps and inactivity made me laugh at myself. I’m the person who wants to park as close to the building as possible, and then walks up the 16 flights of stairs to the office. I want to get as close to the door at the gym as possible. Just funny…
I was “naturally thin” (code for cream cheese, sour cream and ice cream were staple foods and I was skinny) for most of my life, and having two kids I ran around a lot. But as they grew up I had to seek activity so I didn’t gain weight. Being home with COVID actually helped me - I had time to consciously exercise every day, and I did (at least 6 days a week).
