Tonight’s walk was a social thing with a soccer buddy. He only had 45 minutes so I think we did right around 2 miles.
Thursday’s are active recovery for me. I ran on treadmill, swung the kettlebell and did some GHD sit-ups.
For whatever reason, I remembered today the Harvard study that tested the stamina of middle-aged male firefighters, which found that those who could do more than 40 pushups in a row had a 96 percent lower risk of being diagnosed with heart disease.
No, no offensive I say as one of those people who sits on her butt too much now. I have been noticing how much less I move around.
There were times where I thought of my walks as combo of moderate exercise and simply “not-sitting”.
When I was at the home office exclusively, I created a setup with boxes (for laptop and external monitor) that allowed me to have standing desk arrangement … but also sit sometimes. I had almost convinced myself to buy one of those desktop devices with up/down positions to encourage standing, but then there was a corporate pendulum swing encouraging people back on site - they gave me a desk in a large open area.
These are pricey, but worth considering for some home office situations
We bought a couple of those desks for people at work. They sort of used them for a couple of months and I haven’t seen one raised since. I know myself well enough to know I wouldn’t use it. I would rather run for 3 hours than stand for 30 min. A walking treadmill would be better for me, but I’d rather just sit.
I had a strong workout this morning. Did a long stairmonster stint in an almost empty gym. Then I came home and did some core and the same 80 day phase 3 leg video from the other day. The schedule I have only has 5 days/week and I’m used to/prefer 6. And I like how much improvement I can see in this one from the first couple of times I did the 80 day program.
Earlier in the pandemic when I was WFH daily I used a large plastic storage container flipped on my desk and put my laptop on top - the bottom of the container had a lip/indentation around the edge so the laptop fit nicely. I used it a little daily.
Very cold temps for the next several days. I did a cardio weights video this morning for 30ish minutes and just took a bundled up 2.5 mile walk. I don’t feel great running when the temp is in the teens because I feel like I’m sucking in such cold air.
We had a handful of folks in our office who used standing desks. They were available upon request, but I really dislike standing for long periods of time. It’s actually easier on my body to walk around (or even run). When I worked from home full time during Covid it was hard to get many steps in unless I did a run or walk that day. I tried to get up every hour and walk around and up and down the stairs, but that didn’t always happen.
I do have a lot of steps today. Ran 10 miles with my training buddies and one of the Directors from 261 Fearless. The miles go by so much faster when running with friends.
I forget I have a desk that can go from sit to stand by pressing a button. I am active, but I rarely use the stand part, and I rarely see anyone else using it either. I do remember a time where you only had a choice of a “sit” or a “stand” desk (there were high chairs available), and only a couple of people took advantage.
In other news, I rode my indoor bike for 25ish miles and walked 4 plus miles today.
I’ve never tried a standing desk and don’t really want to.
Today’s adventure was a blast. After last weekend, D1 expressed dismay that we didn’t ask her to join us for our hiking trips. So we found a cool 7.4 mile trail in Prince William Forest Park (the National Park that I bet none of you have heard of). Well. we made a wrong turn and even without it the guidebook was off so it became a 10.8 mile hike. It was super cool and a great time. We had our recovery beverage at my favorite craft brewery (founder’s kid play soccer for me).
We then had 1 mile each way to dinner, which resulted in in 30K step day. Which also means today was roughly as longer than our average planned day on our planned walk this summer
Yesterday I ran 7.5k. When weather is good for running, it seems efficient to add to my normal 5k. My husband seems leery of me working up to 10k because I started running so late in life, body unaccustomed to it. If I add more distance, I’ll do it slowly over time.
Today I tried the “10,000 step” 30 min workout discussed last week. It was good to get moving, and I will do it again in future. It’s actually 4.000 steps for instructor (you can do 2x). It was less on my iphone step count … no biggie… I manually log by minutes into MyNetDiary (food and exercise). Most parts were easy, and I liked the low impact of it. The lunges I will do at my own pace next time because I prefer doing slower / good form lunges.
For my other shorter Fitness Blender routines I did video (no audio) on ipad and watched Netflix on the chromebook.
Long workout this morning. My run was OK. It wasn’t going as well as I had wanted, but I turned it into a fartlek of sorts - pushing when I felt like and backing way off when I wanted. That helped a lot and I knew the video portion was going to be a doozy, so I figured I’d save my energy for that. Workout was a prescribed double. The Work’s Push/Pull is hard enough on it own, but I had to do Insanity Max 30 - Tabata Strength before it. So… many… push-ups… of all varieties. But I got it done and felt stronger - or at least more confident I would lay down and die - as it went along. Tomorrow will be shorter and easier.
Just had a great workout!
Good soccer night last night with someplace around 8K of steps.
Planned a 6 mile run this morning, but my body told me to stop at 5. I gave blood on Monday (a bit less than 48 hours before the run) so that might have been why.
@FallGirl – I think that listening to your body makes sense. Sometimes it is smarter than we are
Last night’s walk was 3.3 miles and included a stop at a neighborhood sub place to pick up dinner.
I’ve been doing fairly well with exercise lately, but not walking the stairs at work as I had been, because use of better mask makes breathing much harder and after 16 flights I sound like I’m gonna die.
I rode my bike 36 miles this morning, and then did some other exercises.
I’m going to round up a tiny bit and call tonight’s walk 4.8 miles
I was not going to run yesterday when I saw temps would top out around 28 degrees (colder than I’ve run so far this year). But after my husband put the trash out he mentioned it felt ok outside with bright sun and no wind. So I bundled up and ran 5k.
Today was dreary, so did indoor fitness videos instead. I will probably need to do a lot more of that because there is a string of 4 more cold days predicted (high temps 15, 10/snow, 6, 19). We’ve been spoiled so far with a mild winter. Looking forward to 2 nights away in Breckenridge CO, for a freebie thing we need to use up… might get to ski a day
3 mile treadmill speed workout this morning. My running buddies and I are hoping to get a long run in tomorrow morning before the bad weather comes in. After the last 2 winters with almost no snow, we are getting icy, slushy stuff this year.
