Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Three of us did a “light” 6 mile run on Saturday (very slow pace) but it was a beautiful day and always nice to get outside with my running buddies.

Plans to go downtown (DC) to run/walk near the cherry blossoms early this morning were cancelled due to pretty heavy rain. Will stream a yoga class and do a strength video later and run tomorrow.

Yesterday I rode outside for the first time this year. 24 miles at 14 MPH or so. Today I did 9 miles on the spin bike and then 15 minutes on the elliptical and 15 on the rower.

The weather is sort of all over the place this week! Some mild days (for Ohio) mixed in with a couple chilly days. The new seasonal addition to the workout - yard work! From now until November I’ll spend at least a few hours a week either cutting grass, weeding, gardening flowers/vegetables - and this year we have a lot of outside painting to do. The yard work for sure counts as exercise!

still here and kicking. I try not to post too much from my computer at work, but I’m in a lull after a very busy morning/several work days.

Last week, I decided that I need a break from all the HIIT jumping, and decided to start 80 Day Obsession. I usually save this program for when I’m feeling frumpy/bad about myself. I don’t now, but I do need to get my midnight snacking under control. This should help. Today was Day 1 - Total Body Core. It was fun. And my shed has warmed up to the 50s! I barely used the heater in the last week. This week has some lows in the 20s, so it won’t be put away for good, but it’s nice not to be bundled up lifting every single day. Soon I’ll be complaining how much I’m sweating in there.

Re: weather. I love running in the 30s. 20s are better than the 60s. And anything over 70 is just gross because our 70s come with tropical rain forest humidity. I have found lifting is a different story. The shed in the 50s and an unmuggy 60s is lovely. 40s is OK with the heater. 30s are tolerable if I’m doing mostly HIIT type stuff. But I also wear a hat and gloves (under my lifting gloves) and spend my breaks in front of the heater. Muggy 60s and up is gross in the shed.

Yesterday we squeezed in a quick 2 miles. Tonight after dinner we walked 5 miles

Typical every other Tuesday/Wednesday combo with a bonus 2 miles in the evening.
90 minutes of soccer Tuesday night, 3 miles on Wednesday morning and then 2 more after dinner

How about a role call? Anyone who has posted here or lurked here and wanted to post, check in and let us know what’s up in your fitness/nutrition/health world? Even if it’s “not much” - we all feel that way at times and need motivation!

I’m continuing my goal for 30+ minutes of something exercise wise in the morning and another minimum 30 minutes after work. Menu selections include running, walking, indoor cycling, fitness video (low impact, cardio, weights, core).

D2 was home for 3 1/2 months for a clinical rotation so I probably cook/ate more than usual. She loves to try new recipes and loves to bake. I maintained weight but I’m sure my body and schedule will appreciate a lighter schedule now! I’ll still make dinner of course, but simpler ones at that.

Responding to roll call - I’m struggling a bit. The scale says I haven’t gained weight but my clothes are tight around the arms and abdomen. So, either I’ve lost muscle or my weight has shifted, or both. :frowning:

I admire those of you that exercise an hour or more a day. I have the time but just can’t seem to get motivated.

@HMom16 It’s hard to get motivated sometimes. It might help to break it up a little- do a 10 or 15 minute video (I like Fitness Blender) or go for a short walk. Good luck!

Roll call- I continue on. In my case, being able to be active has helped keep me glued together during the pandemic. I run, walk/hike, practice yoga and strength train. Motivation varies by activity and day but I push myself because I always feel better after I have done something.

Checking in. Did Day 4 of 80 Day Obsession. This “AAA” one focuses on the negatives. I’ve been enjoying the program so far. I can tell I’m stronger with the moves. And, as it was raining, I did a stairmonster/bike combo at the gym before hitting the shed gym.

Many (most?) days when I head out for my run, I think there’s no way I can stick with it for the entire time. I tell myself to be patient. The time will pass. And it does. (go figure!)

Good to see you @HMom16 ! Don’t get stuck on how much you do (or anyone else does)- but try to do a little something most days so that you feel good about doing something - which I often think is the most motivating factor - just feeling good about moving!

I don’t think I’ve posted here but have posted elsewhere. I mostly pop in and lurk here.

I faced reality when I got on the scale on March 1st. I’ve been exercising regularly ever since with a mix of YouTube exercise videos, stationary bike, and strength training (thanks to my sons begging for a home gym during Covid). Weeks back, someone mentioned Fitness Blenders - I love those quick workouts for arms/abs and use those along with cardio videos. So thank you to whoever mentioned Fitness Blenders!

I mentioned on that running thread that after being a lapsed avid runner in my 40s, menopause has not been kind and I was going to get back into running. I got derailed in week two when my knees were really bothering me. I’ve never had knee problems and attributed it to all the squats and lunges I’d been doing, as well as that I forgot I never bought new inserts for my running shoes. My knees are fine now and I got my inserts, but rainy weather has gotten in the way. I plan to start up again next week (just got my first COVID shot yesterday and cannot lift my arm today past shoulder height!).

In the meantime, I lost 10 lbs since March 1. I forgot to mention - in addition to exercise, I also gave up alcohol which for me is wine, have cut out all empty carbs/sugar and been tracking my food intake (following an endomorph plan that tracks protein, carbs and fats). Lost 2-3” around my waist.

Hoping to lose another 10 pounds by the end of May - my goal is my oldest kid’s (recently announced in person) college graduation.

Thank you from a lurker who gets inspired by reading this thread!

Responding to the roll call.
I seem to have hit a plateau, keep bouncing around in a 3 pound range. I’ve just added more time to my swim workout so I’m hoping that will help with the final 10 pounds. Overall I’m happy that I’ve lost close to 30 pound in the last two years, and I understand that the last bit is the hardest, but it’s frustrating. Coming here to read all your stories helps keep me motivated. Looking forward to nicer spring and summer weather, but I know I have nothing to complain about compared to many of you.

@4kids4us WOW! You got on that!!! You seem to have a good handle and are juggling a few wellness habits - good for you. I predict you will continue to see good results.

Great progress 4kids4us … congrats! Interesting that you mention new inserts for running shoes as I was pondering that yesterday. Do you always have them, or just when your shoes get sem-worn?

Great job. Glad to hear you’re doing so well.
If you’re like me you may need to give yourself a break every now and then to keep going long term. Sounds like you’ve taken on a lot at once.
Keep up the good work.

Roll call response - I haven’t been as good as I’d like because I’ve been dealing with a sick cat and getting ready for retirement. But day 1 of retirement is here, and I did an hour on my spin bike and 30 minutes of rowing this morning. I hope to do at least an hour of exercise, about 6 days a week for the short term. I am allowed to make it up in longer stretches on some days if necessary.

Roll call …

Still plugging along here. I think this week is the final first-phase week of Naturally Slim. I said I wanted to lose 12 pounds in 10 weeks and so far am down 10. I guess I’ll count the end of the week as the final weigh-in. I find myself actually antsy if I don’t work out each day. Oh, and I finally got the Apple Watch. Love closing those rings!

Out there every day, at least 6 times a week.

I’m walking and riding my NordicTrack bike. The golf course opens tomorrow so I’m sure that I’ll be doing that quite a bit.

I always put inserts in my running shoes. I buy a new pair every other shoe purchase.

@Colorado_mom I had plantar fasciitis at least 10 years ago so always bought new inserts every time I replaced my running shoes. I stopped regularly running the summer before the pandemic. I was walking a ton during the pandemic and had gotten some new running shoes but never replaced the inserts. Once I started running again, I could immediately tell I needed the support. That was the long way of saying, with running, I have always used supportive inserts I bought separately, not the ones that come with the shoes (I wear Brooks and use the pink Superfeet inserts).
