LOL - lazy day here. Just checked my phone (which is almost always in my pocket)… ha, only 1464 steps. That’s OK, it was a successful day in other ways. We took a drive and saw our daughter, outside with masks, for first time in a few months (YAY). Also I got a bit of practice on highway driving, in prep for our big road trip in May. During the past year I’ve logged very few miles behind the wheel, none in hubby’s car.
Beautiful day here in SoCal yesterday. 7 1/2 mile late afternoon walk to the beach. Lots of colorful hang gliders over the cliffs. H made himself a steak and I did a nice lemon/caper halibut on the stove. It was a lovely end to the weekend.
The 2nd CF workout is in the books. As is my pattern, I tested “21.2” on Friday night and then repeated the workout tonight, completing 25 additional reps, over Friday’s output, before being time-capped at 20 minutes. I’m very happy with that increase in reps over Friday’s performance.
What’s really rude is that tomorrow’s regularly scheduled programming includes burpees and “21.2” had burpee-box-jump-overs. I’m really tired of burpees, so I may go off script and work on some other movements.
Spring is in the air! And on the calendar!
We represent all parts of the country - how does NOT below freezing temps or too high temps affect what your exercise routine is?
What are your favorite conditions (temperature, or sun or no sun, daylight, time of day, inside conditions, etc.) to do your activity in?
Although I do run in freezing temps, my outdoor running sweet spot is 35-50 degrees and sunny. As a morning runner the best times for me to have those conditions are spring and fall. (I’m in Northern Virginia). For walking, I like a bit warmer 50’s and 60’s are great. I never mind wearing a light jacket, sweater or sweatshirt.
I had a physical yesterday with a new doctor. It was music to my ears when she told me I was not overweight. And the appointment was over an hour, she really took the time to ask me things and establish a baseline. She is a keeper.
Most of my workouts are inside, but when late spring comes, I walk my dog at 6 a.m. so he can avoid the heat rather than midafternoon.
When I’m biking outdoors, I prefer it to be over 60, and not TOO hot or too humid. Walking I’m more flexible - I am OK wearing a jacket, but don’t want it to be too windy.
Forget to add I have been getting exercise, but the weekend was somewhat of a failure. I had quality family time though. After work I walked over 4 miles with a friend. I may do the rower after dinner.
For running, I avoid all rain (pretty easy to do in arid Colorado). My favorite weather is when temp is under 65, without much wind. I’ll run at lower temps, occasionally even when down to the 20s, and enjoy it if wearing appropriate clothing/layers. In summer I try to run when cooler in the morning. But I will run in 70s or even once in while in 80s, but I don’t enjoy it as much. Humidity is low here, but I still find the hot weather a challenge.
I have never run inside. Part of the charm for me is being outside, and also I’m uncoordintated. When not possible, I’ll do other exercise inside (videos, rec class on zoom, or trainer bike). Or sometimes, like today when 43/windy , it seems unappealing to run so I walk instead. If I end up joining a gym post-covid, most likely I’ll use it for classes and weight machines rather than treadmill.
COVID gave me more motivation to get some fitness in early in the morning, pre-work.
We have a dog so I always do a morning pup walk, about a mile during the week, longer on the weekend. That’s my warm up. My goal is usually 30 minutes of something before work and if possible 30 minutes of something after work. I usually achieve this.
My sweet spot running is 50-70 degrees. Being able to wear shorts is a bonus! I’ll run when it’s warmer or colder - if it’s under 30 and NOT sunny I’m less likely to go out.
My FAVORITE time to run - or walk - is dawn or dusk. I LOVE a good dusk run.
Yesterday was the 1st practice with my 1st grade boys. It was really fun and a pretty good workout (~4K steps).
I also played 90 minutes of soccer last night (practice is 5-6 and soccer starts @ 8:15) so it was busy day
Hey guys! Long time no see.
I got my second shot and am counting the days until I can hit the gym again. Weights! Spinning! The outdoor swimming and running have been great, but I miss the indoor stuff.
Thinking over the last year, I did not gain weight but lost fitness. All those small walks I used to do from the parking lot to the store or classroom were gone. Maybe not so short—Texas has big parking lots.
Thinking about a weight loss plateau, I am another one who focuses on unprocessed foods. I try to eat five fruits and vegetables and do that first, before adding in other stuff. Often I am too full for a donut after that. (@abasket)
I will walk in most weather, even a light rain. For preferred temps, I like when it’s warm enough that I don’t have to wear gloves. People mention not liking the wind, I am near the ocean and I love the ocean breeze. When it is hotter I wear my hair up, so that helps with it blowing in my face. Not temp related, but I like having more hours of daylight to fit in my walk. I have been slacking on weight training, I know my step up dock will be put back in the water soon.
LOL, and the donut discussion has a place in EVERY thread…!
Exercise was short but intense. 20 Minutes of 3v3 soccer with my very quick, talented HS girls. Most of the time was in the cardio zone .
I also got my 1st shot today.
Yay to the !!
I don’t mind a light breeze. It can slow my running time, but I try to convince myself it is just “extra resistance”. But my lake trail is very open, and strong winds can get annoying. When I skipped on Tuesday it was 16 mph winds … not crazy, but with cooler temps it can make it hard to know how to dress right.
Today I ran outside for the first time in almost 2 weeks. Temp was mid 40s, which I like. Some breeze, but not terrible. Often in winter I wear gloves at the beginning but can shed them later when warmed up. It can be a pain to stash them, but today it was warm enough to use my “one glove” trick that I do when undecided. I start with glove on one hand, switch to the other hand when it gets cool. After that I can go back and forth, but usually I can quickly stash. It’s nice to have with me in case things get windier/cooler later on.
A slower day at the gym today. Tomorrow is the final CF Open HIIT.
Today, a 1/2 mile for warmup and then I began with “death by bike.” First minute, 1 calorie. 2nd minute, 2 calories. 3rd minute, 3 calories. Keep adding 1 calorie until you can’t finish in 1 minute. I got to 13 calories in 1 minute, in the 13th minute. I was pretty fried after that.
Next I did 50 toes-to-bar and 100 push-ups, the first 41 were performed without stopping. And I finished with a 5K treadmill run.
I thought of this group when running in a breeze today. It wasn’t too bad, with temp in high 40s and bright sunshine. I had exactly the right combo of layers, lovely run.
Back at home 2 miles was another story. I came home to see Jack working on the lamp post out front (our town has an unusual tradition for 6 foot high lamp posts at each house). A microburst had blown up, disbursing the neighbor’s mulch and knocking our top/light off its wires and mounting. We’ll call the town to remount it on Monday.
Friday–we did our the short version of our new Friday routine, 3ish miles round trip to a local beer garden.
Saturday-- morning/early afternoon was chores and then we did the 3.6 there and 1 mile home to our dinner spot.
