Tonight’s funny exercise story. I got home from coaching and DW suggested walking to Whole Foods because Google said is was 3.1 miles each way. But they suggested route was pretty lousy (busy street and no sidewalk for part). So we went home a different way which resulted in the walk home being 4 miles. It was not how I intended on spending my evening
I haven’t weighed in a week, to give you an idea of how my days have been going.
Vacation over so back in the saddle.
Is it Friday yet? I haven’t had a bad week, but this afternoon is DRAGGING! Rode the bike this morning. I have been pushing the interval length on level 9. One day I did almost all of the hour at 9! I did not feel like trying to top that, so I reverted back to my short 1:30 hard/1:20 easy intervals, but I did level 10. First time for that. It wasn’t too bad. Then I went home and did day 48 legs. I swear Days 1-40 flew by, but getting to 50 is taking a long time. But I did well with this one today. Good ROM except in those modified pistol squats (“elevated leg” is on a slider). Those were comical.
And after many delays due to covid illness (realtor), lack of available appraisers, a loan refinance, and then 3 more unknown delays, my in-laws finally closed on their house! H is very relieved as he did most of the legwork to get this thing moving. The in-laws haven’t lived there in several years. It was just too overwhelming to them to get it done. I’ve heard it’s a young couple just starting out. I am happy for them.
Hey, I lost a half-pound on vacation!
Yesterday was a blast-- I guest coached a 1st grade girls team practice (coach picked practice time assuming he was working from home because of COVID and yesterday he had to go to the office for a meeting). It is always fun to run a practice for some random team. Post practice, we did our usual 5 mile (3 there, 2 home) to beer place.
Today was 10K steps-- all on the soccer field.
And to brag here-- my HS girls won their division with a game to play. In all of my seasons of coaching, I only have a couple of division titles so this one feels pretty cool.
Congrats!
Back from vacation to the beach. This time I rode over 100 miles while there, maybe 120. The weather wasn’t that warm, but it was great for riding. My son rode 200.
Today I double washed 2 cars (bc they were so dirty), hand dried and did the windows/vacuumed one, and then did a bunch of weeding. I’m calling that my exercise for the day.
Today was what I like to think of as typical Sunday for the summer. 90 minutes of pickup in the morning, chores and 2 miles round trip to dinner. Bottom line=15K in steps
I “jumped off the cliff” last week and signed up for the in person Marine Corps Marathon. I am excited but also terrified. Biggest concern is that unlike some of the races, the MCM has a time limit and at points during the race if you are not already at a certain distance they send a bus to pick you up. I am not a fast runner so I have some work ahead.
I started my first day of training today ( I have a coach), 3 mile easy run. I am also registered for an interval (speed) training group which will begin in June.
I’ll check in today.
First, competition is good for the soul @FallGirl. Now that the pandemic appears to be receding, I’ll also be adding some competitive events to my schedule. Might as well, since my youngest will be off to college in the Fall.
Sunday was a complete rest day for me after my typical “over do it” Saturday. Saturday consisted of setting a 5-rep max PR deadlift and then a 20-min HIIT of 60 lighter weight deadlifts, 60 burpees and three 400m runs sandwiched in between.
And I followed that HIIT with my “Murph” prep, which was 10 rounds of 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups and 15 squats and I finished up with a 2-mile run, all wearing my NEW weight vest loaded with 20-lbs. Memorial Day is the day I’ll be competing in the Murph, so I’m almost done with this prep cycle.
Also, my gym is full of competitive power lifters (squat, bench press, deadlift) and Saturday they’ve persuaded me to participate in an October competitive powerlifting meet. I won’t win anything, but I’ll enjoy the comradery and have some fun.
One of the issues I have, besides being old and weak is that I’m right smack in the middle of a weight class. I’m not bulking up 10 lbs nor will I be losing 10 lbs, so I’ll be at a competitive disadvantage IMO.
Lots of missing kids at practice meant more running around for Coach-- toss in soccer and I had another 13K step day yesterday.
Congratulations! I was trying to look up the time limit and couldn’t find it. I would imagine it’s pretty generous. The average finish time in 2019 was 5:06. You will be fine! It’s such a great race. You will have a blast.
Checking in with Day 53. I’ve made it to Phase 3! Phase 3 is my favorite of the phases. Today was legs. It’s really hard, but it felt great. I can tell I’ve improved a lot from 3 years ago. I’m still working on stretching. Some days are better than others, but for the past 2 days my flying pigeon was REALLY strong. I held it for a long time with controlled & relaxed breathing even. That’s usually my downfall.
@ClassicMom98 - there is a limit- you have to average 14 minutes/ mile or less and there are points along the way (Starting at mile 17) where they will pull you off the course if you are not making the pace. This worries me somewhat. My best pace in a half (virtual ) was around 11 1/2 minutes/mile. But this is twice as long… I have a lot of training ahead.
That is a bit quicker than I would have guessed. I’ve seen 7 hour limits. However… your 2:30 half marathon indicates you should be well under 6:00 for the full. General rule of thumb is double your half and add 10 minutes for seasoned runners or 15 minutes for slower runners. An hour of extra time is almost 2:00 per mile slower. I predict you will be fine and finish with a big
Seriously though, the biggest downfalls I’ve seen for runners are to be severely undertrained (I don’t see that for you as you’ve already done several halves), showing up half injured (be careful to not be so gung ho with your speedwork), or going out too fast. Do NOT run your first few miles < 12:00. It can be easier said than done when your race day adrenaline is going.
5-6 hours. Wow.
@ClassicMom98 I have seen those later finish times, too. My thoughts are that they either changed the time limits or as long as you are past those points you can really slow down a lot.
I agree, the pacing is going to be a mental challenge. I can’t burn out but I have to make sure I don’t go to slowly…
Thanks for your vote of confidence. I hope/plan with training I will be ready!
I’m so excited for you! I think your half pace will hold up at the full length. Back in the day, I never did an official half-marathon but ran that length in training for the full marathon (and one ultra). I trained with the 10-minute group and ended up doing about an 11-minute pace. You have lots of wiggle room to stay under that 14-minute mark.
I will enjoy following your virtual training!
@Youdon_tsay Thanks!
Got in an hour of indoor biking and 15 minutes on the rower. Will do kore tomorrow.
