Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

The ultimate warrior mentality. Me OTOH, I shut down my run yesterday because it was high 40’s low 50’s with a lot of wind. Felt like Chicago in the “dead of winter” to me. Finished up with 10 minutes on my home air bike and called it a day. By Sunday, most of the time, my body feels like garbage. And yesterday was one of them.

@Midwest67 I see all these young kids wrapping themselves in all sorts of sleeves and other accessories/stuff. The other day, I saw one young guy, in his late teens/early 20’s, wrapping one of his thighs with a long strap like he was about to inject steriods. I can’t offer you anything.

I have never been to a gym without a scale, that’s weird to me. I wonder if members complained about having a scale?

Midwest67 - knee sleeves may or may not solve knee-related issues. Have you been diagnosed with anything? What symptoms are you experiencing?

  • tears and associated issues shouldn’t be addressed with knee braces, etc.
  • is it patellofemoral?
  • do you have bone on bone issues?
  • do you have arthritis?
  • when do you feel the pain? Going up/down stairs or hills?
  • difficultly jumping or doing lunges?
  • pain at the beginning/end of run?
  • sharp or nagging pain?

Oftentimes knee-related issues aren’t a result of hip strength related issues, tight IT bands, etc.

Sorry meant to say knee issues ARE a result of hip strength etc

@ohiooiho

I have read that knee sleeves can help keep the knees warm and increase comfort before and after barbell squats.

I don’t jump, lunge, or run. I think I do have some arthritis.

I don’t sense I have any sort of knee injury – just normal (?) creaky stiff knees.

Currently squatting 148# for five sets of three reps. I’m female and 56 yo. Although I’m not sure exactly what I weigh, I think that’s got to be a little over bodyweight.

Recently, got a thumbs up on form from a strength coach in person.

I’ll come out of lurkdom and join this thread. I may not post much, as I only occasionally get to threads I follow on cc and then it takes me a while to catch up on them.

First, to answer this question from @thumper1 on the first few pages:

I am also a lifetime member quite a bit over goal weight. In October I rejoined when an at work program started at my office. This is what I had previously done, and I liked the convenience and familiarity, it works for me. Although we are in a large building we have barely scraped by with the minimum enrollment. Anyway-

I did a plan in the 90s with exchanges and then a plan about 10 years ago which is similar to one of the three plan options now, the green plan. When I joined in October the plan was ww freestyle, which is equivalent to the blue plan. There is also a purple plan. The difference between the plans is how many food fall into zero points, they should still be tracked, but are less tied to weight issues (according to ww) and by having fewer things to “count” make the program fit more into a long term lifestyle. I personally do feel I could continue the program even after I reach my goal weight, the app and the flexibility are much easier for me than the programs I did in the 90s and 2000s. I have lost 30lbs since October which is not quite half way.

Here is the rest of an intro.
I am 55 and although never athletic, I like being active and have had ebbs and flows of exercise, I used to run and then I blew out my ACL skiing. I also was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes so the whole management thing has been workable but another thing to manage. I love to eat food, not as a reward, but because it tastes good! I have been reducing portions and am satisfied with less now.

I broke my ankle in April and did physical therapy over the summer and then have been seeing a trainer to get back for skiing this winter. So far my fitness is great, the ankle is still sore. I am trying to do some sort of activity 5 days a week.

I was adopted and found my birth parents and therefore some medical history in the past year. I don’t have good genes, both things like cancers and also heart disease. I take meds for high bp and high cholesterol. I want to live a long life and have an active retirement, so I am getting serious about being healthy.

The personal trainer is winding down, I bought a package to a local yoga studio and although not my thing, it does help with flexibility. I have done a few classes at the gym where the PT was, I will be moving sometime in the next few months so am in a holding pattern now and won’t join a place until after the move. I do some weights and core at home sometimes. I do walk several days a week and do ski/kayak/hike in season.

Recovering from 3 hours of functional fitness aka yardwork on Sunday. It was too good of a day to waste it on sitting in front of a TV. Still was able to join the Superbowl thread at half-time.

Welcome @jackief ! I don’t know why I’m always really impressed with anyone over 50 or so who is still active in skiing! Good to have you here.

Anyone have a recommendation for exercise to get rid of fat right at the back of your underarm, close to your bra strap? In “normal” clothes I’m fine, but if I put on a tight bike jersey, for example, I don’t think it looks good. I know many women do it anyway, but I find myself going up a size, then it looks sloppy.

@1214mom I have an enlarged gland on one side that makes that area even worse. Definitely a problem area for me too. I do tricep exercises with my kettle bells and dips, but I really need to lose more weight before I’m going to see any improvement.

I agree with @momofsenior1 My suggestions would be dips and overhead press. Pull-ups with an assist from resistance bands too, if you’re talking about the upper back area (lats).

That’s a tough area (especially in females). That and the bat wings…

The fat in that area extends to the breast tissue… so yeah, it is a tough area to deal with. Agree with the exercise suggested above. Plus any exercises that are known to help to reduce boobs. Push-ups is a good choice.

I am not overweight, but I also have issues with that area… halter neck tops help to make it appear more toned than it is.

Minor imperfection @1214mom ! You’re out biking - that is all anyone should focus on! I’d look for the shirt that is not tight and not too loose.

I have been looking at purchasing this glow in the dark/lighted item because I like running before it’s completely light in the morning or at dusk. I will also use it for walks. It’s on a great sale right now - normally $69.99, now $39.99 and free shipping. It’s VERY lightweight and adjustable.

@1214mom

Perhaps not what you want to hear, but IMO, this is normal aging.

Our skin is losing its elasticity and it “puddles”.

Sure, adding muscle will help with appearance, but there’s only so much we can do without the surgeon’s knife.

I used to have a flat stomach even after two kids, but the skin is just not holding on (in?) the way it used to as I age.

Some good exercises:

(No, they will not make your boobs disappear. )

Thanks everyone. I am not overweight, and yeah, I had a flat stomach after 2 kids too. I won’t even bother to ask about wrinkles help  - gravity sucks!
I am going to try some exercises that focus on that area, but I guess I should be happy I am in relatively good shape and can do as much as I can.

^^^ The other thing that might help (?) is to buy a different variety of bra that provides different back coverage. Like a halter sports bra or a criss cross that doesn’t hit at that area, etc.

Good idea @abasket. I tried a couple, but all have a “band” that’s tight around that area. I will have to look at options.

How could I forget pushups. Great suggestion @BunsenBurner And you can elevate to scale them.

Saw this. My apologies if posted already. Not really new news.

@Midwest67 A 5x3 at 148 lbs is outstanding! You go girl!

I’ve done pushups and assisted pullups and dips for years. Sadly my arms do not look great!
