I was DEATHLY afraid of crowns and root canals. And the thought of crumbly teeth still freaks me out and depresses me. I associate that with old age even though people have issues at young ages. But I had many memories of my mom having root canals when I was young and being miserable that it scared me to death. I finally needed one a few years ago and it wasn’t bad at all! I’m sure the process is much different now. I am not a fan of crowns because of the whole multi stage process. We now have a place in town that does it all in one day. I may go that route if/when I need another. My dad had one done that way and said it was a long day with lots of waiting for it to be made but not bad and the same price as his other crowns.
Well done! Lots of good accomplishments. Glad your doc will err toward caution so you can feel confident all is ok.
Maybe you should treat yourself to a piano tuning? I have been thinking of doing same, since I have started to try playing whenever hubby is out of the house (which alas is almost never, since we are retired and … you know, Covid). It’s only a few years since last tuning though, so I may wait until just before piano kid comes for a visit - for his level of playing, it really does make a difference. Me not so much, still having fun in a Level 2 lesson book.
It’s med appt season for me too, though not dentist. Tomorrow I get annual physical. Need to ask doc about getting bone scan, will post about that on related thread.
Finally back at the running club for the Saturday AM run - have not done this since March 2020! Ran 3.2 with a runner friend I haven’t seen for awhile and got to see others I have missed.
Spent the day doing an 8 mile guided hike at Gettysburg. It was great-- we’d walk a bit, then the 2 guides would talk a bit, then we’d walk some more.
The trip was definitely worth some insane driving. We went to Louisville for the final of the women’s soccer league. We left Friday morning and had a blast in Louisville. The game was at noon on Saturday. It was over by 3 and we left right afterwards. We rolled into Gettysburg at midnight.
Happy Thanksgiving! May you have a fine day, with some family time and maybe some upper body exercise getting the turkey in and out of the oven.
Are you doing anything else fun today? I turned down a last minute opportunity to do a 5k Turkey Trot race with our daughter. Timing/location was not convenient, and I’m not quite in gear yet for a race at 18 degrees.
This article was interesting, making the case that running at older age might actually be good for the cartilage.
While we’ll be heading over to a relative’s for Thanksgiving, we’ll also drop by a gym buddy’s house for his annual T-Giving waffle party beforehand.
To burn off some calories pre-festivities, I went to the gym for a run on the treadmill. Thursday’s are typically a light day for me anyway. I warmed up with a 1-mile run and then put on my 20-lb weight vest for a 5K.
In past years, pre-pandemic, I would run a 10K Turkey Trot, but I’m not “warm and fuzzy” about running in a crowd of heavy breathers yet.
My fifth appearance at a local turkey trot. This one is fairly large (over 2000 participants) and very well organized. After finishing 4th in my age group in 2017,2018 and 2019 (no live race last year) I was determined to PR and crack the top 3. Good news - I PR’d! Very pleased with my pace…but placed 4th (out of 21) again! The ladies in my age group ran strong!
It was fun of course, good weather (I’m a cool/cold weather runner). And I ran into a few friends who also ran. Good race overall.
Nice job! Having a PR is fantastic, especially since you are a few years older than prior races. It’s nice that you have a fast age group to keep you motivated.
Feeling glad I did not join daughter at her turkey trot 5k. Not only would it have messed up our kitchen logistics, it would have required (at least with her plan) walking 2 miles from her apartment in 20 degree weather. I’ll run my own 5k today in cherry-picked temp/sunshine.
UPDATE: 60s and bright sun made it a little warm for me the last few km, even with a layer removed. But this time of year I just try to soak in the memory of summer. Headed home after 5k to encourage hubby to do a hike or walk with me.
I was able to get to the gym the last two days. Since it was so empty I decided to lift there and take advantage of heat! On my chest workout, I was able to use the 40s, 45s, 50s pound dumbbells for my chest press (15,12,8 reps) and that was after I had already done incline chest flies and press. I was pleased. I only gave up to 40 at home - unless I use the plated ones and I’m too lazy for that - so it was nice to use the big ones.
Quiet group… hope that means you all are having fun with family and holiday things.
We continue to have mostly warm, lovely weather in CO. It makes us all worry about lack of precip for the water supply… but it’s nice to get outside and enjoy it. Today we had another 70 degree day (@abasket - if we have late April blizzard next year and I whine, remind me about the late start to winter).
Today I did my usual 5k run around the lake, and then another slower 5k as I sometime do. Just for kicks, I ran another 1k because I’ve never done more than 10k. Of course I did all of this in morning, so it was ideal temp around 60.
You really can’t go wrong with a regular walking habit.
I had a bit of worry last night with sore ankles, never happened before. I’ll probably stick to walking for a while and then just do 5k runs until sure all is ok.
Haven’t checked in in awhile as we were out of town for ds1’s wedding 2.0.
The week before we left town, I got my new DXA. It was disappointing. I’m down 10 pounds from this time last year so yea, but I have lost some lean mass. I know it’s because I had to turn my heavier weights into the program when some people returned to in-person classes. I’m going to have to spend the money and buy 25-pounders. In good news, for my birthday, we bought a weight rack for my home gym. I like my new workout space.
At the DXA, my trainer said to just get through the holidays and we’ll start anew in 2022. I had gone without a month without Diet Coke but had some on my trip. What’s great is that it finally feels like I can take it or leave it. I had one yesterday for my 59th birthday, but it doesn’t feel like the beginning of the end, you know? I am hoping this bodes well for other food things and that I really am establishing a healthy relationship with eating.
I’m been MIA for a while on this thread for different reasons. None of which are I haven’t been doing any fitness - cause I have - my usual!
But thought I’d make a few comments on things I just read up on here.
@ClassicMom98 so happy that you got the non-cancer clearance. Our bodies are never text book are they?!
Also I love that @ClassicMom98 divided a post above into different kinds of health - not just physical, but mental, etc. They all belong as part of posts here!
Finally, an ode to my mom and perhaps some inspiration for us here - especially as we sometimes experience achy body parts and getting older motivation…
My mom died two weeks ago at age 88. Her only “conditions” were high cholesterol/blood pressure and arthritis in her hip. Never had been hospitalized except for her 4 babies. So, so physically active - I think it was her mental health exercise for decades! She walked (as she would say, "I did my full walk today - 3 miles) religiously - upset if she had to miss a day because of weather. She swam laps at the local Y - something she did 2-3 x a week on Tuesday, did yard work with my husband on Wednesday and became suddenly ill and passed on Thursday. Without activity her life would have been so, so hard. I’m so thankful that she was active right until the end. Aches and pains didn’t stop her.
She leaves a legacy for me anyway to always be active. There isn’t a age to stop unless your body just says “I can’t”.
With that, I think of her every walk I take. Especially when the sun is coming up or setting.
We are all so lucky to value the release of energy by being active!
I’m sorry for the loss of you mom, abasket. You are right - she is inspiring! So active! And, now her influence is being felt by all of us, beyond even those who knew her in person.
Does anyone follow the Wander Women hiking youtubes? They just completed the PCT and have accomplished the triple crown of hiking- AT, CDT and PCT. They are very inspiring ladies.
