I’m with ya. We only got 3” of snow but then we got sleet and freezing rain for 8 hours. It’s perma-ice now. I shoveled for two hours and barely made a dent. But miracle or miracles we didn’t lost power. I was certain we would
yah, me too, no power loss! stunner!
it took my husband and i probably four hours, all told, to finish the driveway and clear off the cars. everything compacted into, like, igloo bricks on the shovel.
I’ll turn 60 in August. With a hubby 7 years older, I think those big birthdays maybe are not as hard on me as they would be otherwise. (Our friends are older, not a great situation… but makes me feel younger). I started my running and healthier eating 5 years ago, and it does cheer me that I’ve been able to keep up the better habits and NOT regain those 15+ pounds that I don’t miss.
Per MapMyRun, last year I ran (slowly) about 350 miles. Also did other other exercise videos etc. Not always as much as I’d like, but I keep telling myself “not bad for almost 60”.
I am turning 60 this year too.
I retired last year, and one of my goals or whatever is to work out almost every day. I try not to beat myself up if I don’t make it a day, but I’m really pretty good about it.
I like the idea of adding some stretching. I’ve tried yoga occasionally, but don’t seem to stick with it. Maybe I better try again.
I turned 60 almost 5 years ago. I feel healthy and young.
My thoughts on being over 60:
Being a runner really changed my mind about age. I started at age 59 and ran my first 5K then. I was not athletic growing up and (pre Title 9) there were NO sports offered for girls in my hometown or growing up. So that 5K was the first time I had ever competed in any sort of athletic event.
As a runner I could not hide my age what with age group results - so I embraced it. When I became a coach in the training program I had started my running in, I was not shy about my age (62). I wanted women in the program to know what was possible at any age. I think a lot of the women really respected me for that. Several told me that I inspired them.
Three years ago I ran my 2nd 10K. Felt great when I finished - I had taken off 12 minutes from my first effort at that distance. So excited at awards - I was 5th place in my age group! That was out of 5 (LOL). You know what? I was still really proud of myself for my (then) PR. I also was proud of the other women in my age group because they were fast!
I have posted here before that in November I ran my first marathon at age 64 (actually 64 1/2…). I’m really proud of that and hope it helps others (especially women) realize that being over 60 can be great.
I know that it’s hard in our society. In 2017 I changed jobs in my company and my own position was back filled by a man a few decades younger who got the title I should have had as well as the higher salary. It was devastating TBH but being active and running helped. I was not valued there but I know that I am so much better than that.
So, get out there and be active. Choose an activity/activities you enjoy and have fun. Be thankful for every day you can do this.
Your last sentences.
I will be 62 this year. The year I turned 60 was the first year H and I did a 2 1/2 week ski trip all over the west. This year will be our 3rd year doing that trip and I am skiing better than ever. I am thankful everyday that I can do the things that I love. I view age as just a number and don’t let it get me down. I think that our generation is so much more active than previous ones so hopefully many of us can keep going for years to come!
I thought this article was very funny:
Slide #5 re: Crossfitters is quite hilarious.
Lol so true. Funny! Did they miss the tutu lady? Those mostly show up at longer races, but I have seen them at our local 5ks.
I’m thinking of doing another race in March, but I’m worried about “Heavy Breathing Man.”
@sushiritto we could do a bingo with this. I think I’m only missing 2 of them…
I got “Bingo.”
“Stroller Parent” usually scoots right on by me.
I always look at “Crazy Warm-up Guy” and think “Should I be doing more stretches?” before the start of the race.
And on obstacle races, even shorter ones, you should see a few of racers with their elaborate back and fanny packs. I’m constantly thinking “Would I be faster if I’m popping those energy gel shots?”
LOL - I was thinking that I’m the stoller parent, without the stroller or the kid. At my first/only 5k (when still walking some of it) I was passed by several stoller parents.
As my grown kid often reminds me, every effort beats couch potato…
A whole 3 lb PR on my squat last night. So, I’m up 9 lbs from my October powerlifting meet squat number.
The HIIT was a simple how fast to 100 calories on the air bike and 100 push-ups.
Did our usual Friday night walk to dinner (2ish each way). We are going to do some sort of hike tomorrow.
I walked outside yesterday even though it’s very cold, and I plan to get out again today. I’m starting to question my sanity :).
Right there with you! But even a small amount of being outside and hopefully some sun makes such a difference in my mental well being
You may have just inspired me to make this a walking day. I’ve been exercising mostly inside (conditions at my running trail probably still bad… have not been out there yet this year). But this afternoon temps will get to 40 degrees, with bright sun. Not warm, but not all that cold either.
Our 3” (plus 8 hours of sleet) is still hanging around one week later. Whatever the plows didn’t get once the storm stopped (I.e. all res streets) are still completely ice packed. Fortunately I live on a main road. But between that, everyone in the office either being out of the office with covid, or in the office coughing and sneezing probably with covid, and H being miserable being stuck on virtual all week, this week has sucked. But today is the first maybe, maybe in all of 2022, that we’ve seen the sun. 14 degrees/5* windchill be damned. It was a good run.
And now we are headed to younger S’ school. GF visited us later than originally planned so he took her back to school too and couldn’t fit some stuff. So, he won’t need those soccer balls anytime soon and the coffee mug could wait. But I wanted OUT of this blasted city for a day.
Change in plans-- I played 90 minutes of soccer this morning and we will do the 1 mile each way walk to dinner.
