Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

UPDATE: It’s been one week since I had the metabolic rate test and went down to 1,200 calories/day. I am here to report that I lost 1.2 pounds this week, exactly as expected! Funny how math and science work like that. So, after months of hovering in a three-pound range, I am officially at a weight I haven’t been at in many, many years.

I definitely can keep this up for a while. I had a lunch date cancel last week so I was able to control my food choices 100%. This week, the lunch date has been rescheduled so less control over exactly what’s in the food, but it’ll be fine, of course.

I didn’t mention this above, but my trainer also wants me to work on shortening my eating window – in other words, intermittent fasting. Does anyone here do that? I spent the week reading up on it, and that also feels doable, though I would like to eat before I work out at 11 so that’s a complication. Last week, I made sure not to snack past 8 p.m. and didn’t start drinking until 9 a.m., but I think people really want to get you to 16 hours of not eating. This week, I am doing 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 a.m so up to 14 hours.

There was a lengthy thread about intermittent fasting here on CC awhile back.

For me, putting a clock on when I can eat or drink is a form of punishment. Seriously, for me a few pounds or a number on the scale is not worth that! Individual call for people though!

Congrats on the 1.2!!! We used to do 5 pound parties here on this or the previous like this thread!

There may have been more than this thread but here is one intermittent fasting thread.

Good job. So is that 1200 calories of food (ie no “credit” for your exercise calories)? I did that for a short time when in initial diet mode, but it was hard.

Thanks! I must’ve missed that because I wasn’t interested until this past week. lol

You know, it sounds more difficult than it is, at least for me. For me, it means not indulging in an evening snack, which I don’t need anyway. We are early eaters here – 5:30 for dinner most nights. Retirees have nothing on us!

As I understand it, the system they use to calculate looks at your average active calories burned in a workout and puts that into a formula. I gave her my phone to look at the Apple watch app to get that number (average of a week of workouts was 296 active calories). It’s used to ascertain a level of activity – sedentary, active, etc. – and then that number is part of a multiplier.

So, no, it’s not like “I burned 200 calories today working out so I ‘earned’ 200 extra calories in food.” That’s where Weight Watchers did me wrong – I was earning a LOT of extra calories and eating all of them. I never had to change my eating habits and still lost weight thanks to running a lot of miles per week. Got injured and all the weight came back. The fact that every day I burn roughly 300 active calories in a workout is kind of baked into the 1,200 number, if that makes sense.

But also, this woman has known me for five years now. She knows my body thanks to all the DXA scans, and she knows my personality so what will and won’t work for me. I trust her.

I’ll post my thoughts on IF, but only in regards to weight loss, since I believe that IF does have benefits for those who have diabetes or other medical issues.

In terms of weight loss, simply put, it’s calorie restriction. Calories in, calories out (CICO). Most of the research that I’ve read found that IF is not any more effective at weight loss than any daily calorie restrictive diet.

Having said that, if IF works for your lifestyle and the methodology helps you lose weight, then that’s wonderful. Do it!

The bigger question is if one decides to stop IF, because it’s not sustainable for your lifestyle, then can “you” (the royal you) maintain that loss of weight?

The key is what happens after your weight loss. “You” want to have a consistent diet, and if that’s IF, then great, but “you” want a consistent and repeatable diet where you won’t gain the lost weight back.

Iheartradio is free. And do you have Alexa? You should be able to play music through the app. We do in the car sometimes but we also have Amazon prime.

Re: intermittent fasting. Now that I am retired I typically get up around 7. Not hungry until 8 or 8:30 so I eat a bit then (before my morning run). I eat an early dinner (5:30 - 6) because of my reflux issues. So I am on an intermittent fast (I do not eat between 6PM and 8AM) though not of my own choosing. I lost about 20 pounds in 2020 which is when I started having to eat this way (I also cut processed foods as much as possible and made some other healthy changes). I have not put the weight back on. So at least for me, the IF may have helped me to lose weight and maintain.

The GERD diet! Hope it’s better since you started eating earlier!

One of worst things that came with getting older is that out dinner conversation is about our reflux issues!

More on shoes. Mine are from Lowa. My wife’s current favorite pair are from Hoka (the same company that makes running shoes).

On music. When I’m walking by myself or at gym, I still use an IPod (I have the 160Gig model) to listen to things. I still buy MP3s or CDs and then rip the CD onto the computer. My collection very large (~35K of songs). I will also listen most of the day while I’m working.

Apparently Apple Music will let me upload my collection but I haven’t tried yet.

Hahah, this is so funny - I figured I would look one more time at my ancient hiking boots to see if maybe anything was notable that would jog my memory … and there is a little tiny badge on one side I had never noticed before.

I couldn’t read it but I did a rubbing on paper with pencil - like you do with bas reliefs at cathedrals or whatever - and the boots are Vasque!!

So now I know what shoe really works well for me. Of course, who knows if, 25 years later, they bear any resemblance to their old quality/workmanship…

Thanks! I installed iHeart app on my iphone today and listened to music while walking. I like the free/easy aspects and listen again next time I run

For the record, I saw the 27-year old gym member, a powerlifter, who bet with me on who has the lower body fat % between us. He had said, the prior weekend, that he was going to make an appt., after I had told him that my test was scheduled for last Thursday.

He never made the appt. I’ll give him some slack since we all get busy, but I told him the window will be closing in the not-too-distant future and then I’ll send my “bill collector” after him.

Good luck to all of those who are supposed to get ice and snow! May you all keep power and stay warm! We are only supposed to get rain, which leads me to my whine of the day. After a super dry 2021 - 24" less rain than average… having a wet January is a shock. It’s supposed to rain the next 2 days. Tomorrow morning will be a light rain/no wind, but 42*. Friday is to be pouring rain and windy, but 60*. I’m willing to skip one, but I’m not sure which is better at this point. I’d love to go to the gym, but our daily known case counts are still 150/100K people (with a 45% positivity!) and nobody wears masks… so nope. no way there. I’ll just suck it up I guess.

So I tried to enjoy the run this morning - great weather at 22* and no wind - but my legs were sore and tired. And then the workout of the day was the first power day of the program. My power is laughable on the best of days, but today even more so - especially in a 32* shed. But it was fun and I enjoyed it, though the super hot shower afterwards was the best.

I’m in an area that is supposed to get the snow - the last couple of days have been predictions anywhere from 12-22 inches. Yesterday was mild after work - about 44 - so I went for a “last hurrah” run - it was great. Woke up today to still 40 and wasn’t even raining yet so got the dog out for a better than usual walk and then the light rain started so moved inside for 30 minutes of a new workout video.

Every hour without snow is a good hour as far as I’m concerned!

Good night of soccer last night. Temp was in the 30s and after the last few weeks it felt great.

Also, given the decline in COVID cases in our area, we felt comfortable going out for beers afterwards.

Texan with PTSD from last year. Also hoping the power and water are working when I wake up tomorrow. :slightly_frowning_face:

In good news, this 1,200-calorie and foray into intermittent fasting is working. Down another 1.2 pounds so far this week!

We are in the “rain” area so I got my long run (9 miles) in today. I will likely do a short (3 mi;e) treadmill run on Friday.
