Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

I got my fourth booster Thursday so Friday did a new-to-me, 40-minute stretch and mobility routine as I had a slight fever and headache. Man, that was awesome. On the rare occasion I don’t feel like going hard, I can certainly do that to get some movement in.

Today I did a 5x5 of deadlifts at 70% of 1RM and then I did 1x of cleans up to a recent PR for the me, at least in last 4-5 years IIRC. I almost didn’t get “out of the hole,” when getting to upright.

The HIIT was a 15-minute AMRAP of rowing, lunges and rope climbs. And I finished with a 3x10 of glute ham raises. Yay!

Does anyone here have a home Infrared sauna? My husband was paying a monthly fee to use one locally and I thought it would be a fun gift to give him his very own for Christmas. Apparently the gift was for me because I am using it way more than he is. :joy:

He originally started using them for health benefits. I have no idea if it really does what it claims but I am thoroughly enjoying it. I find it instantly calming to sit in the heat and then I feel rejuvenated after the deep sweat when I’m done.

I’ve been getting back to my weight workouts which has always been more favorite way to exercise and then I spend about 30 minutes in the infared sauna. It’s been a really nice combination for me and I feel really good these days.

We were one of those families who bought the peloton during the early stages of Covid and I rode it a LOT, but what I’ve found is weights are really my thing. I’ve always enjoyed them and getting back to it feels so so good.

I, too, love weights. :muscle:t4:

No sauna in Texas, but my DIL’s fam in northern Wisconsin has one. They love it. I’ve only tried them a couple of times and didn’t enjoy them, but that was many years ago and would like to give them another try.

Yeah it’s all about feeling strong for me. I was pleasantly surprised that after a break from weights I’m still fairly strong and didn’t loose too much ability. I don’t enjoy traditional steam saunas but I really like this infrared one…one perk is my head stays out so I can tolerate the heat better.

Good weekend. Friday was out 2ish mile each way to dinner. Saturday we walked one of the long ways to our Mexican joint so it was about 3.5 there and 1 home. Today was 90 minutes of pickup

Finallly got to run again this week (twice), after about a month away from the trail. I do other exercise and/or walking each day, but sometimes not much. It felt good to be out in the sunshine.

The podcast I picked today didn’t grab my attention (Desert Island Disks, interview of famous person along with their favorite music selections). It did get me thinking that maybe sometimes I should run with music. Any suggested music sources (I use iphone) and artists/tunes?

Today I did biking, walking and rowing. Then I ate too much…

I always run with music unless I’m running in the dark - rarely would I run in a busy spot. I used Spotify and have for years. Spotify is somewhat controversial now but it really works for me and we have a family plan.

Music is SO motivating for me on a run.

I’m doing a wellness challenge at work. It started last Monday. A lot to describe but essentially the “loop” to complete is about 46 miles. If I can complete 6 loops in the 6 week program I’ll get a $60 Amazon gift card (put towards new running shoes!). I finished one loop in less than a week. I’m noticing since I finished the first loop I don’t think it’s automatically starting a second loop - I need to get this resolved so I don’t lose ground - or miles!!!

Anyone have any hiking shoe recs?
I have a $150 gift card to Dick’s Sporting Goods, which kind of limits my options.

I have a great pair that I bought in 1997 that have finally given up the ghost - sole is cracked/split and while I still love them for purely dry walking, I need a good pair for my wet/muddy waterfall-chasing hikes.

I have to have ankle support (ankle surgery) and thick soles for all the rocks I clamber over. The ankle support cannot be too high, like those monster Appalachian Trail-type hiking boots I see; they chafe against my thick calves.

I know hiking boots and running shoes are highly personal when it comes to fit, but I’m hoping to get recs on brands that last a long time - I can’t quite believe how long the ones I have now held up (unfortunately, they’re too old and faded to even see the brand). So many great memories with these boots, sigh.

At the gym, we (members) get to pick the music on Spotify, when we’re working out. We share the DJ duties, but we all have appear to simlar music tastes. So, when we’re lifting and working out, the music helps motivate us.

Now when running outdoors, like today at the beach, I don’t listen to anything, ever, except for cars and bicycles passing me, so I’m not hit. I like to listen to environment, including the waves and the people enjoying the beach.

For music I also do Spotify and have some ‘energetic playlists’ as well as some ‘chill playlists.’ We also have a family plan that makes it very affordable. For 6 months I had the free plan - ads all the time. So now I relish the continuous music (although don’t fully understand how the artists make money and if it’s enough…!).

I have Merrell hiking shoes, so does my daughter. But I tried and returned a few before I got the ones that worked for me. The style I have is Moab

I loved my Merrills but my new pair are Cloudrocks. My D loves Keens. All three have great arch and ankle support.

Both my husband and I have Lowa hiking boots. My old ones were Vasque. Does Dick’s have a platform or whatever to test them and how they would feel going up and down? REI has that, and it helps figure out sizing. I think you want to have a little extra toe room for when you’re going down.

Definitely not enough. I think it’s something like 350 streams per dollar.
From a story I just read:
“Using the rate of $0.0032 per stream, 1 million streams would make $3,200. If your average pay rate is $0.0054 per stream, you’d make $5,400 after a million streams.”

My wife is fond of her Keens.

I can’t help because I still like the old school fairly high on my calf boots.

Over the last 35 years, I think I’ve done it all. I ran with nothing for almost 20 years. Then I got the shuffle which I adored. I went through several of those, but now they are too hard to find, so I’m stuck with my phone. I listen to all kinds of music. Some on spotify - even Christmas playlists and classical music! I love running to the Brandenburg concertos. I feel like I’m running through Busch Gardens, lol. I sometimes just listen to a local radio station on iheartradio. And if I need motivation, which is often, I now listen to beachbody workouts. My favorite is ShaunT. He is so positive and makes you work hard even when you don’t want to at 4:30 in the morning in the dark all by yourself… because really, who’s going to notice if you’re slacking? ShaunT will! He keeps me honest.

Thanks for all the music methods feedback. I’ve been pretty happy running with podcasts, so not sure I’d want to pay. (We may be able to pay a little extra to change my husband’s Apple Music to a family plan). I’d be willing
to give music-running a try if I could find something free/limited to use on my iphone.
