Great weather here in CO. I ran on Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday… guess I’m getting into the groove…. until winter returns next week.

Had a bit of a shocker driving over to the lake. As I turned onto the outside road of the development, I saw cones and fire truck. Then some up/down movement on the sidewalk … CPR. Had to do a bit of rubbernecking to ensure not any body I knew. It was older person with grey hair, I think female. Not sure it the were on the sidewalk when it happened or pulled from a car. It reminded me it’s probably a good thing that I have ICE set up on cellphone and also an address sticker under the clear case (a bit of a security risk, but I’m more worried about leaving it somewhere).

Today was a different day. I headed back to the track for the first time in years with the hopes of re-teaching my legs how to turnover faster and more efficiently. I used to be a regular every Monday for years. I even ran a marathon by myself before work (at 8am!) one day. I had my own key to the gate. It probably still works, but I’d feel weird using it now. So I went in the back way and realized that if this becomes a regular thing, I’ll have to run around further to the main staircase and not through the stadium steps. With the shadows, my depth perception being off with monovision, and lack of handrails, I’m an accident waiting to happen. I’d love to see a video of me basically crawling down them this morning, lol.

The lighting/shadows were a big reason why I quit going. Once they installed LED lights at the school (the track is dark), it messed everything up for me. My eyes can’t go from light-dark fast enough as I go around. And the track always had a couple of holes where the springy layer peeled off, but they were getting more numerous. and, there’s a 6" drop off on the inside edge in places. Yes, poor schools lack quality facilities.

but, the plan was to just run hard 200s since one side is pretty decent still and easy on the other side. And wow, the track is in even worse shape. The springy layer is almost completely gone on the far side. I knew I wouldn’t be fast, but oh my I was even slower than I thought. But I guess my effort wasn’t what it used to be either as I don’t want to tear something right out of the gate. and I was running into a stiff headwind. But still. Blah. Oddly, I’m not depressed. I just have a lot of work to do - assuming my feet, ATs and everything feels OK tomorrow. I wound up doing 12x200 hard, 200 easy and then it was ~1.5 mile to the track and then I took a long loop home through a hilly neighborhood. Lifting went OK, but nothing to write home about.

Killer soccer this AM-- 8K of steps in 90 minutes. I scored 1 goal and could have had another–I’d broken to goal and realized the pass coming to me was headed on target so I left it alone.

Cool thing today was a former pro player played with us-- he totally got our vibe which made it really fun.

Quick recap. I took Thursday off.

Friday, I warmed up my deadlifts to a heavy for the day and then it was time for “22.2”, which is the 2nd (in a sequence of 3) CF workout for the CF Open. The HIIT consisted of two movements in a 10-min timecap.

1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (reps) of:
Deadlifts
Bar Facing Burpees (hop over barbell after each burpee)

I got to the burpees in the “9” on the other side of “10.” I’ll do better tomorrow (Sunday).

Today, I squatted and bench pressed to a heavy double. The HIIT was a 30-minute AMRAP of 500m rows, pull-ups, push-ups, sit-ups and air squats.

Sunday, my AM run along the beach esplanade and then later in the afternoon, I’ll repeat “22.2”.

I’ve managed to walk at least 4 miles and up to 8.5 every day we’ve been on vacation. That one day we spent several hours on a boat and I was snorkeling, swimming, etc.
Alcohol consumption has wiped out any “goodness” associated with all the exercise I’ve been getting.
This week we will spend multiple days hiking.

In the grand scheme of things, BAU habits are a lot more important than vacation splurges. But good for you for getting so much exercise offset!

What’s BAU?

Sorry for the acronym. BAU = Business as Usual, ie normal non-vacation time, aka the other 50 weeks of the year.

Well after my 5-miler in the AM I went back to the gym this evening and re-did 22.2.

Despite not feeling it, probably because it was much later start than my normal workout and I had run in the AM, I completed 1 1/2 additional rounds and got to the Round of 7 (finished round of 8), finished the 7 deadlifts, but I didn’t get to the burpees.

I actually timed the AM run and I was very happy with my time. All around good day!

4 mile hike in Waimea Canyon on Kauai today. Great views and a nice workout. It’s rated “hard.”

Not sure how many people follow Jesse Diggins but here is her Facebook post today with a lot to think about imo.

“Working on a blog post about the Games that I might (someday) finish. But for now, I wanted to address the most important takeaway for me from the Olympics, because it’s the one I would have needed to hear when I was 18. I was only able to get to those start lines because I am healthy, happy, and have a loving and supportive team around me. Listening to my body and taking good care of it isn’t something I’ve always done, but getting help for my eating disorder and learning to accept my strengths instead of always trying to be “perfect” is why I’m still racing today.

The New York Times article that compared my body to the incredible women around me was harmful in many ways. So I want to be clear on this: as coaches, parents, teammates and friends, please, please do not comment on someone else’s body, shape or size.

Let’s keep the focus on the things that really matter - being a great teammate, mental strength, competing clean, training with purpose and racing with guts. The words we choose to say to one another can make a big impact, whether they are uplifting or hurtful. So let’s keep choosing to speak with kindness, whether it’s to a friend, athletes who look up to you, or to yourself.

Friday check-in. Not a bad week of workouts. I did not go to the track today, as I started getting antsy the night before. The new regime might be weird if they didn’t want me there and take it out on H. I might try later, or I may wait until next year when he could retire immediately if it came to that. I could also run at the other track - there’s always someone walking there, but I never liked it because it’s not a standard distance around. It’s 450 yards instead of 400m or even 440 yards. And it’s regular asphalt not rubber. But it might be my best option now. It’s not like I trying to blazing fast or anything anymore.

Anyhow, so today I just did intervals on the road. Ran to my flat stretch by the gym, and did 12 sets of 1:00 fast, 1:30 easy and back home. I know my fast isn’t track effort fast, but it was faster and the overall pace seemed pretty good. My lifting workout was just eh, but that’s ok.

Bigger news is that I might go to the gym tomorrow. I hate that they don’t open until 7 now, but it’s supposed to be pouring rain AGAIN, and I’m sick of it. And I don’t have to lift, just aerobic work. So maybe it won’t be too bad.

I’ve been doing great with my exercise during vacation. The only day I didn’t get at least 4 miles in was the day we went boating/snorkeling/swimming. Tomorrow may be another “bad” day bc I have 12 or so hours of flights with only a short layover.

During the pandemic I signed up and showed up for swimming everyday at 8:00am, however after my niece’s wedding in July, I just stopped swimming cold turkey. This week, my husband and I are finally back to regular exercise again, we played 2 hours of pickle ball this week. Swimming will be restarting soon, but only one day a week, now that I just bought the non-toxic sun screen, maybe I can venture out again.
Last year we signed up for gym at our senior center, but when omicron started, my husband and I just stopped going. However, I’ve been doing 15-20 minutes floor exercise daily, surprisingly, all my back trouble has gone away, shoulder trouble also gone away. In addition, I also do 2-3 hours of gardening everyday because I love it, that’s another form of exercise.

Our last day in Hawaii we did a fairly tough hike - close to 7 miles with 1800 or 1900 feet of elevation gain coming back. Good thing it was the last hike, because my husband’s hiking boots barely survived. They will be left here when we leave.

Thank you. It’s been great, and I’m really happy we’ve managed to get so much exercise while we’re here. (Any potential weight loss is countered by excess alcohol and food consumption). We were with friends for a week on Maui, and I think the female of the couple only made it out to the beach twice during the week (Not counting going on 2 boat trips). One day she went to the pool for maybe 30 minutes, and then went back inside. Seemed like a waste to be at such a nice place and not enjoy it.

I went to the gym today. I wish I could say it was good, but I don’t see going back on a weekend unless the weather is horrible again like today. I was glad to go when I left, as it was in the 40s (and dropping) pouring rain and 20mph winds. Warmed up before the gym opened with 1.5 miles under the shopping center awnings. Then got on the stairmonster and was just off. It was super hot. It was more crowded than I like and I felt blechy. After 30 min slunk to the bike where 30 min felt like an eternity while I watched the clock tick away. How can it already be 8am?! Ugh. Then I did abs and stretched and some minor things and slunk home feeling completely out of sorts.

I can see trying to go back to the gym once a week. I’d like to get back in the groove of the stairmonster. But it’ll need to be on a weekday and not so late.
