We decided to hike a bit in the greenbelt behind our house this afternoon with neighbors. Another neighbor has made it a personal mission to clear out a grown-over trail. It’s really nice back there and a nice second workout for the day.
I am thinking about giving up sugar for Lent. Has been a good way to fix up diet in the past.
I’ve been thinking about Lent as well. I already am making so many changes right now that I don’t want to sabotage myself by throwing something else in the mix. Maybe I’ll do something like add 50 calories to closing my Apple watch ring daily? That way it’s something more proactive than an austerity measure.
Thinking about lent here too. I’ve been maintaining for a while a now (which doesn’t look much different than when I was losing) and don’t want to derail myself either.
I have a Spindrift addiction going though and could use to drink more still water vs carbonated so I’m going to do that for Lent. H is going to stop impulse buying and just focus on needs vs wants. (He easily adds $50-$100 to our food bill because he’s like a little kid).
Another great hiking day:
Part 1: 3 miles of trail- our original plan was to do this hike and connect to trail on private land but we got to the boundary of private land and found a fence blocking the path. We drove to entrance of private land and discovered they are closed Dec-Jan-Feb
Part 2- since we could finish part 1, we went to nearby location and did another 2ish miles.
Part 3-- since we needed cash for cat sitter did 1.75 mile route to dinner and then 1 mile home.
Total step for day is north of 20K
Years ago I gave up butter for lent. So many things I’d start to eat and then hear the kids asking, “are you SURE there is not butter in that?”. Other years I gave up chocolate…. but not recently.
You are some strong disciplined people. And I know some people are “all or nothing”.
For me, giving up something entirely is a recipe for self confidence/healthy mind disaster! Deprivation would not work for me. Establishing a threshold or healthy habit (like maybe aim for 10% less on the dinner plate or smaller treats) is more encouraging and doable.
I think the adding some calories burned goal to your Apple watch is a good one!
Drumroll, please …
Today marks four weeks since I got my metabolic rate test and began IF that evening. As of this morning, I am down 5.2 pounds so that’s 1.3 pounds a week. I am so happy to have finally moved the needle again. I went back to see how long I had been stuck at the old weight, and it was March 2021 when I hit it and just stayed there. I feel great and have started a deep dive on it to see whether I’m even doing it “right.” I am learning a lot and appear to have stumbled into a lot of best practices so yea!
I’ve got streak going:
Monday we walked a longer way to dinner so I got in 5 miles.
Tuesday night was 90 minutes of soccer
Tonight we walked someplace around 4.5 miles before dinner
Checking in to distract me from listening to my co-workers cough, sneeze and sniffle all day again. I knew this week would be tough mentally weather wise. But I had a great workout Monday. Good (dry!) run, upped my weights a fair bit on my dead lift, and worked my lunges really hard… And then was crippled the rest of the day. lol
Tuesday, still crippled and almost slept in, but it hadn’t started raining yet, so out I went. Shuffled through and did the corrective/mobility work. Glad I went out, because Wednesday was soggy. Steady to hard rain the whole way. At least it was warm and not windy. Changed clothes for my “power” workout which was still a bit painful, but I got through it. This morning, I thought I lucked out with the rain. Legs still slightly tired, but mostly better. It wasn’t raining, but pretty windy, but I still felt better than Tuesday-Wed. And then the rain hit with 20-25 minutes to go. LOL. More mobility/corrective exercise work.
I hope it stops by tomorrow morning…
Yesterday was beautiful here, and I wound up walking 8.5ish miles.
It was so nice out we decided to have wine on our deck, NOT a usual activity in February. Tonight they are calling for bad/slick weather here.
This old dog learned a new trick. Had a great time across from a calm, seawall-protected area in Waikiki Beach. Water was warm, and with our hotel across the street I had access to paddle board. Yay - I was able to stand up first try. Went out two more times, plus other days in the water for swimming and boogie board. (The waves were mellow, but I actually never went elsewhere).
There were plenty of food/drink splurges, but lots of walking too. I am most proud of my very fast hike up/down Diamond Head. Hubby was waiting for me down in the shade, reading a book. (Our agreement was I’d turn around after 45 min, even if not to top.). The guide books said it could take 45-60 minutes each way, but I decided getting further up was more important than dilly dallying for photos and rest. Plus I “train at high altitude” ;). I was only able to jog a bit near the base due to the crowds. Total time up/down was 55 minutes.
Nice! I walked the dog this AM, in the SF Bay Area, and the weather app said 29 degrees. OK, so that’s about as cold as it ever gets around here. So, I’m definitely ready to get to Hawaii at this point.
I’m still training away over here. I traveled to San Luis Obispo this past weekend and got my hotel workouts in using what they had (pull-up bar, dumbbells and a treadmill). I also brought my weight vest for a 1/2 Murph (50 pullups, 100 pushups and 150 squats) using the weight vest. Plus the full 1 mile runs for the start and finish of the workout.
Monday was a squat day, Tuesday, deadlifts and cleans and yesterday was handstand pushups, rope climbs, farmer’s carries and KB swings.
Today? May or may not be a rest day. If anything, just some light cardio. Then at some point Friday and/or this weekend, it’s time for the CrossFit Open 22.1 workout, the 1st workout in a sequence of 3 that will be done and a video uploaded to the “mothership.”
One other guy is doing it at the gym with me, but he’s actually accomplished , under 35, and will probably get to the next level of qualification.
Someone at the gym the other day asked me “What are you training for?” I answered morbidly, but humorously, “At this point? I’m training not to die.”
I totally relate to your last comment. I turn 60 in a couple of days. A friend and I walk together often. We do it because we can and we want to continue to be able to. You need to “use it or lose it” when it comes to exercise. Of course we’re not all at your level :).
My training (which leans more toward “Light”) maybe will allow me live longer. Or maybe not… since ya never know what is gonna get ya. But either way it should allow me to stay active longer, have improved quality of life in the later years.
Good Sunday. 90 minutes of pick-up, 4 miles to dinner and 1 home.
Did another 2.5 miles this AM (but forgot my fitbit, so I’m not sure it counts ).
I also get the “use it or lose it” thing-- if I don’t play one week then I definitely feel it
Yea, I will be feeling some ‘have not used it’ pains today.
Yesterday I did my “usual” 5k run, but per MayMyRun last time was 1/27 (due to winter weather and vacation). During the month off I did do some trainer bike and walking and short workout videos, but it was delightful to be back out on the trail in sunny 40s weather. I had to stick to the sidewalk, so that meant more impact than usual mix with dirt trails too.
I was out of town for 9 days and am happy to be back. It was nice outside yesterday so H and I got out and walked and I did a yin yoga class. Made a grain salad for lunches this week. Ran 4 miles this morning.
Husband and I did an 8.4ish mile walk on the beach today. Plus we walked around some after dinner.
Good soccer night on Tuesday. Not only did I get my exercise in-- I scored a goal as well.
We play on fields the width of a full-size field. I was playing up-to and the other team had a corner. I stayed high to provide an outlet. The kick went right to our goalie who through a beautiful ball the bounced at mid-field and let me run right onto it. I ended up 1v1 against the goalie and slotted it home. It felt great
