Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Spin. Spin. Spin til you bleed.

I think I would say that Sufferfest today is like a marriage of Trainerroad and Kinomap.

And Peloton, don’t get me started. Too late, you did. (My apologies to my friends who have them and love them, but you know me, I’m opinionated and can’t help myself, ?.

Peloton has done a brilliant job of market home streaming cycling which has gotten a ton of people up and exercising who weren’t before. That being said, it is an incredible rip off:

  1. The Peloton bike is priced as a top tier bike but is second tier at best in design and construction. The frame flexes horribly if standing and pouring on the power. Not only robs you of power but over time with all that repetitive lateral flexing at frame tube junctions..... See warranty comments below. Plus, there is no fore and aft adjustment of the handle bars. So to size the cockpit (saddle to bar reach), you have to move the saddle which will change the position of your knees relative to the pedal spindle. Can you say knee injury.
  2. The warranty is grossly sub-standard. Frame 12 months. Parts 3 months. Electronics 30 days. Similarly priced commercial studio quality indoor cycles, either 15 year or lifetime on frame and 10 on belt. 3 years for parts and 12 months on electronics.
  3. Instructors tell Riders what “gear” (resistance lev.el) to use. First, there’s no assurance that someone’s bike is calibrated the same as another’s so “Gear 5” may not be the same for everyone. More importantly, no instructor ,worth a damn Tells any rider where to set their resistance..
  4. Peloton used music for it’s classes without paying licensing fees resulting in a $300,000,000 lawsuit against Peloton. .

Everyone has their own daily routine and their own motivation. I’m for whatever it takes to get people moving off the couch.

Nordic track owner here. Were their cheaper options, yes. But this works for me!

@2plustrio - I have an original Nordic Track from the early 90s. Still works perfectly! It’s my raining day “go to” for cardio.

Sufferfest is an awesome name! Haha!

I take my Fitbit off when I’m on the treadmill. Then when I’m done I just put in a treadmill workout for that day and Fitbit adds the treadmill steps to my total.

@Midwest67 Fivex3 IG has posted a video today of a class of older women doing strict overhead presses. I do really love these gyms focusing on the older folks.

Just so happens that my Tuesday workout was a gymnastics-based one, so it incorporated “inverted presses,” aka handstand pushups (plus some other movements). HSPU’s are one of the most difficult movements I do, for sure, since you’re essentially overhead pressing your body weight while trying to maintain your balance, but that’s what the wall is there for.

Regarding the Peloton, the stock has done well, so they must be doing something right. They’re marketing folks seem to have it together. I’m not a big fan, but the people that I know that own them (a sample of 2) seem to be happy with them.

@sushiritto Yes! I did see the pics of the masters class at Fivex3!

Sully (Dr. Sullivan at Barbell Prescription) posted another video of ancient John (93!) pulling 235#

I…cannot imagine! Where John gets the motivation & strength, I have no idea! He looks frail but…but…235!!!

Today was a PR squat of 150# for 4-4-4-3

I failed the last rep of the last set. Bar felt so darn heavy today!

Followed that up with (-15%) DLs for 3 sets of 5.

I’m out of gas. And hungry.

I missed that one. Just for the record, it’s a competitive no rep for not locking out, but having said that, it’s simply amazing that he can get 235 lbs off the floor at that age!

Hooray for PR’s! I haven’t had one in a while. Last week I came up a little short with my clean. :disappointed:

And tonight happens to be cleans again followed by complexes of cleans, front squats and push jerks with lower weight. And then finish with pull-ups, renegade rows and cardio.

“Regarding the Peloton, the stock has done well, so they must be doing something right. They’re marketing folks seem to have it together.”

Not sure I would call it “has done well” - IPO’d at 29 and is trading about what? 32-ish? We’ll see what happens at the 6-month cliff.

“Light” person checking in.

on the exercise front- I have had a cold for a couple weeks, so have been doing low intensity exercise, better than nothing. I had my last personal training session and we didn’t do much cardio (did the erg for those intervals) I have a free week of group classes at this gym which I hope to start on Friday, even if I still have to take it easy I can at least try them and see if I want to purchase more.

on the eating front- continue to make great progress with weight watchers, but I know my weigh in today was a “false loss” as I am on the clear liquid day before a colonoscopy tomorrow. On the topic of scales, I weigh myself every morning and record it in the fitbit app, just to keep a record. The daily weights are a jagged line but it is good to see the overall trend, I don’t make changes based on it.

As I said in my orig post, I like food, so part of how I am doing the ww program is by controlling portion size not eating things like fat free cheese. I also am not a big snacker. In today’s meeting, people were saying things such as “OMG that meal is so many points!” (you get a certain number of points per day) and I replied that example would very easily fit into a day’s allotment, I didn’t see the problem. One of the main goals I have this time around with ww is making it a permanent lifestyle change for my health. I see so much negativity, people that criticize themselves for “cheating” I don’t see how that can translate into permanent change. When I have pizza or beer or both I fit it into the program and don’t regard it as a “cheat” .

I will say that since my appetite is reduced and I am satisfied with less food.

And it’s now slumping after hours on weak revenue guidance after the bell.

I’ll re-phrase. The stock has done “well,” considering I thought the company would be trading at a 50% discount of it’s IPO price by now.

? @sushiritto !

@sushiritto you rock with your HSPUs. When I did xfit like workouts, I used to love to work on those. Inversions and arm balances are my fav yoga stuff. But I never got all the way down on them, and probably wasn’t as close as I felt ?

Planet fitness doesn’t have the space like my old gym to do weird things by myself in peace. I occasionally will work on handstands and forearm stands and such but it’s pretty rare

@ClassicMom98 I’m doing my CF programming in a power lifting gym now for almost 2 years, so for the new members to my gym, I’m sure it looks pretty “kooky.”

Over the years, I’ve lost a lot of girth, so I can’t move the really big weights anymore, so CF programming has a certain uniqueness to it that I appreciate.

Admittedly I’m not familiar with proper WW etiquette, but someone commmenting on your how many points you’re consuming seems like it’s none of their business and judgmental.

@sushiritto I understand. That’s what I like(d) about yoga, xfit, and now P90X/Beachbody programs. They are new and give me the opportunity to try and learn new things. I’ll never be able to run as fast/long as I used to, but I can do things now that I couldn’t do in my younger days either. It helps for sure.

@jackief , I enjoy your “light” report. You are the smart one looking to make lifestyle change and lifestyle that will allow you to enjoy the food you love now and then!

Addressing my knee issue and will get an MRI. I would call it more discomfort than pain, and am running slowly as tolerated (per doctor’s advice). Treadmill 5K this morning- opted to stay out of the rain and off the hills. Doing some hip stretching stuff since he said my hips are really tight. He chided me for lack of cross training. Yes, I know better.

@MomofWildChild Just a suggestion, so please don’t “yell” at me. Take a day off or two. And ice the knee.

Typically, Thursday would be my day off, but because of Super Bowl Sunday, and the weather (cold and windy), my active recovery day (Sundays are run days) was less than desirable. So, my plan for today is to “Run Forest. Run.”

Since I streak, I don’t take days off, but I have scaled it way back. If I have to stop running (which has happened in the past), I will, but for now it isn’t making it worse… It’s always a tough call with these things that aren’t too bad (not like a stress fracture or something) to know when to shut it completely down.
