@jackief - Thanks for posting your “Light” person update I was going to ask if there were any of us left here. I admire all the feats of the hard core exercisers, but my goals are more moderate. Making moderate lifestyle changes (smarter eating, moderate exercise) has been my goad in recent years.
@colorado_mom – even though I am very proud of my new-found gym-going dedication, I still think I am on the “light” end of things.
I actually believe that I do better if I set very small goals for myself. I’m very proud that I manage to get to the gym 3 or 4 days most weeks, but my goal when I first joined the gym last year was once a week. That’s because if I set an easily attainable goal, I feel really good when I exceed the goal, but I don’t put myself in a position where I give up on myself because I am always falling short.
And definitely part of my goal and overall outlook is to watch out for my health and physical well-being in other ways - for example, to get enough sleep. And to take care to avoid injury, including the sorts of injuries that come from overtaxing muscles and joints. Since I am doing weight training I track everything and work my way up very slowly. If I feel significant pain along the way, I stop. Sore muscles after a workout are one thing; joint pain or pulled ligaments are something very different.
+1 on the importance of good sleep! Quantity & quality! It makes such a difference!
Light people- please keep posting. Remember that while some of us may be more “hardcore” as far as exercising, we might be taking baby steps as far as nutrition or other health conditions. We are here to support each other and small goals are great!
I am a lightweight, but I’m inspired by reading what others are doing. Sometimes there are so many posts on this thread I can’t keep up.
I am looking forward to spring, when I can go out and ride my bike (but usually only on weekends, because we ride mostly on trails and there’s too much traffic to go much during the week). For now I get to the gym usually twice a week, walk a lot, and exercise with light weights at home.
Report from a light person - I’ve been sick sick since Saturday. I’ve still managed to get in at least 3 miles/day and my body weight stuff. I was also more careful of my intake since I was much more sedentary than usual. That’s a big win for me because I usually use being sick as an excuse to eat whatever.
To succeed in the wellness war you have to trust yourself and make the plan that works for you and keeps you on an upward path towards wellness especially as we age! I always say, “it’s your game to play”.
There will always be someone doing more, going farther, working harder. Hold your own and celebrate it!
(and yeah don’t forget that the thread takes whatever turn the posts bring it to - you don’t have to set any records to post - post any tips you see, any revelations at the gym, post what animals you see out on your walk!)
Oh, and today my exercise - 1.5 hours total of heavy snow shoveling - an UNFAVORITE kind of exercise!!!
I got no exercise today, but I did cook a healthy dinner - lentil soup, brown rice pilaf with mushrooms, fresh salad. Part of our weekday vegetarian effort, (though I did use some fresh made chicken stock in the soup.)
My dinner tonight was 2 chocolate covered pretzels, a cookie and some champagne. I went to a fundraiser at a jewelry store for my daughter’s cycling team (women’s team) and those were the snacks. I had just enough that I wasn’t hungry for dinner when I got home, but did eat an orange so that I had something nutritious. I had a business lunch today and I didn’t make very good choices there, either. Tomorrow is another day.

I enjoy reading everyone’s nutrition and exercise stories. Light, heavy or moderate.
Today I ran 5 miles on the treadmill. But I heard the barbell, which was hanging on the wall, whispering to me, “pick me up and load me.”
Spin class yesterday. I am dealing with some aging parent issues so I can have a streak of doing lots of exercise and eating well and then it will be interrupted a period of just running for mental health and eating crap. I am back home and was delighted to go to a class. I liked the loud music, the people, the difficulty of it. I have a few spin friends, somewhat older women I see there often, as opposed to the much younger women who attend, and I plant myself next to them and together we laugh and roll our eyes at how hard it is. (But we do it. And sometimes do it even more all out.)
My nutrition hasn’t caught up to being home, though. I am subsisting on cheese and chocolate.
I’ll chime in with others in that I enjoy reading about all levels & different interests!
It hasn’t even been a year since I began barbell training. I still have a lot to learn.
We got some very pretty large flake snow, that did NOT accumulate. Whew!
I’m ready for Spring & March Madness.
We, shockingly, had several inches of snow overnight. I did 3.3 miles on my treadmill this morning, opting to not risk slipping on any frozen stuff. It’s very pretty! Trying to be good about my knee exercises.
When I tweaked my back (Omg! Ouch!) I kept telling myself it would most likely resolve in 4-6 weeks. And, I kept lifting at a much reduced weight.
Experienced people on the internet said this is how it’s handled.
Here’s to your knee getting with the program & healing!
+1 for small, attainable goals.
While I have gotten myself into some steady workout habits in the last few years , I haven’t done as well with my eating habits. Despite being more active I have put on weight ( too much to be from muscle gain). That’s why I considered where I could make some small dietary changes and so far they are working. I know I could not have completely changed the way I eat all at once.
Small steps still get you there.
@Midwest67 That’s how I handle it. Thankfully, back issues are infrequent with me and typically minor. I spend so much time on my core, often to the detriment of max weight lifts. Tradeoffs!
I forgot to mention. Now people are making fun of me at my gym for doing cardio (and no weights yesterday). It’s all in good fun.
Also, the gym added a TV screen above the dumbbell area and now we get to watch Hafthor Bjornsson (the REALLY big guy in Game of Thrones) lifting videos all day and night long. What a time waster for some.
Weather is warming back up here. We’re back up to mid-60’s.
I found that I really enjoy watching ANW, hockey games, Tour de France, and Olympic Games while running indoors… they make the time fly and give me extra energy. A Game of Thrones dude doing weightlifting - I would be scrambling to find the remote and the off button! Lol.
Same thing around here with the stairs at the hospital. One of my favorite exercises is climbing stairs and here in flat SW Florida, there aren’t many places to do that. Except our 8 story hospital. Sounded like a perfect place to me - I could do my favorite workout and if I had a heart attack, help would be right there… wrong. In all the times I’ve gone to the hospital and climbed the stairs for 30+ minutes I’ve only encountered another person once. And I’m pretty sure she was lost.
If I have a heart attack in the stairwell of our local hospital, I suspect my body won’t be found until a week later someone comes to investigate where the bad smell is coming from.
