Husband and I took 4 big items, including a large sofa and chair, to the curb, for “large item trash pickup” tomorrow.
Then I walked a little over 4 miles.
Good weekend for getting rid of stuff, and getting some exercise while doing so.
Starting pickleball lessons today. I hope I really like pickleball and that I can find people to play with.
I did 5 miles on the elliptical this morning, because I don’t anticipate getting a ton of exercise at the lesson.
I want to play pickleball!
I hear it’s all the rage, but I’m not aware of anyone in my sphere of the universe playing it locally. I’m sure there’s people out there playing, but I just haven’t heard or seen it yet.
I’m actually more partial to playing badminton, and I know we have a badminton club locally where one can play, but not much time for it right now.
I also would be interested to learn pickle ball. A few of our public tennis courts have been converted. There are plans to convert more (change line markings?) as city staff has time to do so.
Lesson 1 over. Lots of retirees (like me). I will never be a real competitor, but it was fun and I will invest in my own racket and court shoes.
Any reason to buy new shoes seems like a great idea to me.
OK, my interest is piqued. What’s a “real competitor” when it comes to pickleball? I’m sure there are levels to almost any competition and, if there aren’t, what’s the difference between running in an 5K race and losing to runners that are better versus entering a pickleball tournament and losing to someone better?
Point is, competition is fun, win or lose.
I’m more the person who says “let’s see how many times we can keep it going over the net” than the person trying to keep the other side from hitting the ball.
I’m going to guess that there are plenty of places to play pickle ball in your neck of the woods. I hope you can find one for your competitiveness (or lack thereof) level. Our secretary’s church set up a group within their church. They definitely were not competitive with each other!
But every time I hear pickle ball, I think of H. Several/many years ago before it caught on, one of the local PE teachers set up a mandatory event for all of them to learn after school. H was not amused and I don’t know how many times I heard “I don’t want to learn blanketly blank pickle ball!” I think he later admitted it was fun, just not mandatory after a long work day!
Actually, there aren’t very many places to play, which is a complaint of people around here. I gather some places are re-lining tennis courts so they can be used for pickleball. I think you can play inside at a couple of senior centers, but I don’t know how that will work. Maybe once I get through my lessons I will venture out a little. I figure at this point if someone is willing to hit the ball around a tennis court will be fine.
Is anyone else suffering worse than normal with allergies this season? I wake upon the morning and my eyes are very puffy.
I’m thinking my allergies not as bad this spring (which usually is easier than fall…. and all seasons easier in recent years, not sure why). But flowers and such seem to be lagging here this year, so my itchy eyes may be still to come.
My younger and MUCH fitter sister-in-law ran the Boston Marathon this week. In celebration, I decided to run 12.5km today…. 0.5km more than more own distance-record set a few days ago. It’s just lovely running in 60 degree weather. As it gets hotter, I’ll likely switch to “bike commute” to the lake trail and go back go 5km running loop.
I used to have lots of allergies, now I don’t have anymore, not sure why but I’m grateful. In my 30s, I took Claritin and NyQuil on a regular basis, that can’t be good, so glad I got rid of them naturally.
One of my kids is also going to run for marathon, she did 1/2 marathon for a few times. It’s a worthwhile goal because she has to train and be reasonably fit.
I was going to brag here yesterday, how while my co-workers have been suffering like never before for the last 4-6 weeks, I’ve been doing well - for me. Granted I take zyrtec, flonase an allergy eye drops 365 days/year, but that usually doesn’t hold up well in the spring and fall. Then last night came. Oh my eyes are itching. I can feel my breathing going. Ugh! Grass must be taking over. Oh, and we went kayaking on Sunday for a couple of hours. Nothing hard, but I rubbed a blister on my thumb that popped. Since then, my thumb has been on fire itching. Lathering it up with hydrocortisone helps. it’s definitely not infected, as it’s not red (unless I scratch!) nor warm to the touch.
But it’s really weird in that two of my co-workers have gotten super bad allergies for the first time in their lives. They are in their 50s. I’m wondering if having covid triggered something. Neither will admit they had it, but in January during the wave, one was sniffling and coughing while other members in his household were positive. And the other guy had the same symptoms and he shares a work vehicle with him all day. Both were fully vaxd and boosted at least, but I do wonder if that made a difference.
Yes, my allergies seem worse this season.
Congrats Colorado_mom on the long run!
I’ve played pickleball once - super fun, would like to play something that’s similar to tennis but less complicated & hard LOL
Just talked to ds1 for his birthday and turns out he has been playing pickleball and has a set so we will play when we see him in August! Super excited!
My allergies are way worse this spring
I know there are a couple of people who’ve either lived or live in NOVA on here.
Other than the Air &Space museum (I don’t know how to spell Udvar Hazy), and some civil war places, what “cultural” things are there to do in NOVA, for someone staying around Chantilly? Or suggested breweries/wineries? Is it nice to hike on the VA side of Great Falls? These people don’t want to go into DC.
Suggested better than average hiking spots? I think I recall @jmnva saying there were some nice state parks?
Thanks in advance
I’m sure @jmnva06 would be the best with his walking 10 million steps a day but I love great falls park so much that I get a pass for older S every year. Well all of two years. Old town Alexandria is a pretty neat place to visit. Wolf trap has a lot of concerts, but it’s been years since I’ve been there and don’t know much else.
H and I are planning to visit Mt. Vernon while we are on our own, but it’s a bit of a hike from chantilly.
I am definitely not one to ask about beer and wine.
