Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

@1214mom and @ClassicMom98,

Chantilly is a little bit out from me but thoughts:
Walking:

  1. Great Falls, VA side is really cool and not that far
  2. from there you can access the W&OD bike path which is a good walking place
  3. Bull Run Mountain Conservancy (google for hours) is one of my favorite places to walk. There are 5ish miles of interconnected loops.
  4. It is Civil War-related but Ball’s Bluff park in Leesburg is really cool and nice walking

Beer

  1. so many great choices right near you: Solace, Ocelot, Aslin and Rocket Frog are all right there
  2. Brewery at the Farm is near Bull Run Mountain is super tasty

Wine-- TBH not my thing

  1. Bull Run Winery is good
I suspect that just about any of the wineries out there are decent.

Thanks to you both for the suggestions. Very helpful. Will pass them along.

So I’ve been fairly happy with my ancient (25 year old?) straight skis. Pretty short, easy to carry. It’s pretty easy to ski auto-pilot on them in most conditions the few days a year that I go downhill skiing. But after talking to some friends, I’ve decided to give shaped skis a try. My old bindings have not been tested/adjusted for a lonnnng time because ski shops won’t touch really old equipment for liability etc.

THE PLAN: I swung a $55 deal today and to rent two pair in town for a day trip tomorrow. Snagged $35 tickets for me and a friend to Ski Loveland on Craigslist . Hubby will drive us up and hang out in the lodge. If neither pair is to my liking, I might try a demo pair on the mountain.

The left pair is my own old straight. The shaped ones may be too short, but hope not because wider means heavier to carry.

What’s the difference between them, they seem pretty short.

Course marshaled today for our annual local marathon at mile 25. Often we are chilly for this April race - today it was 64 at the 6:30am gun and 80 by late morning - much too hot and too hot
Much too soon and no one’s body’s were ready for it!
Don’t know how the runners did it. I was exhausted after 6 hours of course directing all standing and in the sun.

Races always need volunteers! Even if you don’t run it is FUN to be involved with a race. You learn to never judge a book by its cover - meaning runners are not all lean and mean and 30
Years old. All sides and shakes, ages and stages finishing the race.

I’m 5’2” and do use short skis (my ancient straight skis are on left, a bit longer than the rentals). The newer shaped rental skis are different price points. It will be interesting to see if I can tell the difference. I may end up trying other kinds/lengths another time on slopeside demos another time if I don’t fall in love. Another option might be to keep what I know, switch to newer safer bindings.

Good news: I worked out yesterday.

Bad news: A weight fell on my bare foot afterward. Youch!!!

Good weekend. I coached 4 games. Kinder games=ton of steps because I’m running the field the whole time. Yesterday was 9.4K steps.

Today, I played 2 hours of soccer in the morning, coached kinders mid-afternoon and when I got home, my wife and I did the roughly 3 mile walk to dinner-- final step count was 18.4K steps

Ouch and Yikes! Are you bruised? (foot, not ego  )

I bet this is the one time you wish you lifted lighter weights. I’m so sorry.

Well my streak of not needing antibiotics seems to be over. I am 99% sure I have a sinus infection. I thought I could fight it off over the weekend with fluids and rest but I took a big nosedive overnight. Now I have a 102 degree fever, my ears are all stopped up and I’ve almost completely lost my voice. I took 3 home covid tests Friday through yesterday and all were negative. H has been fine. Likely my stupid allergies stopped everything up and got infected.

I have an appointment at 2:30 with our work clinic. She’s not one to just hand out antibiotics to anyone. I pray she realizes I’m not an over abuser. It’s been 8-9 years since my last sinus infection.

At least nothing is in my chest. But my face broke out in hives Saturday and my eyes almost swelled completely shut. Ugh.

I am bruised and tender on two toes and top of my foot. Thank goodness, @ClassicMom98 , this was a lighter weight, only a five-pounder! I didn’t drop the weight; it rolled off the bed while I pushed on the mattress to get up after having just taken off my shoes. This is the second time this has happened, though the first time it was a 10-pounder that crashed to my stained concrete floor and left a divot so it could’ve been worse. I never elevate anything that weighs more than 12 pounds; the heavier ones I keep on the floor or rack.

You don’t have to tell me three times … I will put my weights away before I take off my shoes, which I always do for my cooldown. I rode the bike yesterday to not put too much pressure on it. Today is supposed to be a half-and-half day so I will do upper-body weights and during the aerobic portion I’ll hop on the bike instead of hop around.

I have my annual scheduled for tomorrow with my PCP so I’ll have him take a look to make sure it’s not worse than I think. Yesterday, was three months of IF so I’m excited to get results of tomorrow’s bloodwork to see whether there has been a change.

That sounds bad!

And I get the concept of hoping for meds when the doc is hesitant. I like that my doc doesn’t hand meds out willy-nilly, but at times I’m like, dude, I know what a UTI feels like – trust me! One thing I have learned – Teladoc gave me a UTI med in less than a minute.

I wish we had a telemed option. A minute clinic would be nice too. We got this work clinic a few years ago and it is definitely better. Of course, it opened after my kids all grew up! All of those 3-4 hour waits over the years. It was terrible.

They had a cancellation! So I’m in the parking lot now waiting to be swabbed for covid/flu. Crossing fingers everything goes ok

Edit - positive for the flu! Ugh. Last time I had the flu was when the ball dropped 1-1-1999!!! Nope take that back. Feb 2005 when I caught pneumonia after it. No flu shots for normal people that year.

@Colorado_mom - when I got my new “shaped” skis last season they are a bit shorter than the 8 year old pair of straight skis I was skiing on. I definitely recommend trying demos on the mountain. That is how I found the Dynastar skis I bought last year in Winter Park. I had also demo’d skis in 2020 at Jackson Hole, but I think because the mountain is so difficult I couldn’t find a pair of skis I felt comfortable on at the time. D2 got a great deal at Steamboat on K2 skis she demo’s while there in March.

You should definitely get some new skis as you will find the technology has improved and your skiing will be so much better than on a 25 year old pair.

Ouch. It would not hurt to “sister” the bruised toes to the intact ones next to them with some tape. I don’t even bother to call my doctor… this is what they always do if there are no obvious signs of bigger trauma. 4-6 weeks of misery. Been there, done that many times. My sympathies.

Ski Day Trip Report - Wow, was shocked how much new powder snow they had at Ski Loveland (at top of the Divide, along I70 / Eisenhower Tunnel). 12” in prior 72 hours, 4” prior 24 hours. Although I missed out on a nice sunny day in high 50s at home in exchange for partial sunny / high 20s … it was still a great day. LOTS of exercise.

Ski Report - With all that snow (which we usually don’t encounter), It was hard to know for sure how much different the two pair of rental shaped skis were from my own. (Due to parking logistics, I did not get a chance to compare to mine). For now, I’ll hold on decision. The preferred pair of skis/bindings were $300/used. That’s a decent deal, but too much for me to feel open to replacing with others down the road. So i’ll likely try some demos on the mountain next season.

My week was pretty typical-- tons of coaching and playing.

With my kindergarten team, I’m running on the field for 1/2 the game and I tend to wander the sidelines for my other games. Based on a couple of weeks of data, I think my baseline for coaching days is 4K steps.

On Saturday, my wife and I tossed in 2 miles each way to dinner.

Yesterday I hit the soccer trifecta-- I played 90 minute, coached and then watched… I ended the day at 20K of steps.

Now if I could solve my food issues (I’m eating too much) then I’d be golden
