I played PB for over 2 hours, then came home and “double washed” my car, AND cleaned the car windows. (My car gets washed so infrequently I do it twice when I finally get around to it). I doubled my ring goal on my watch.
Coast to Coast Day 15. A pretty easy 10 mile day. After an initial climb (which gave a good view of three of hills we went up and over yesterday), we had a long walk across the moors to the place we are spending the night. It is supposedly one of the highest inns in England.
Altitude changes of 299 flights of stairs. Wowser! I assume that counts ups and downs? Bet your knees will feel that, unless you have them all nicely broken in by now.
Indeed! We usually find hiking down to be harder than up (except if very sunny/hot). That was my reason to comment about the knees, since they take a lot of stress going down.
Some of the hiking guidebooks only give the difference from starting point to end point. We have one we like for Rocky Mountain Park that totals all up/down (counting any stretch that goes more than 10 feet).
Coast to Coast Day 16 (12 miles, 93 flights and 29.8k steps). Day started with long walk across the moor tops, before descending down to the River Eden).
On weather question–it has been in the low 70s the last two days. But since we have largely been on exposed dirt/rock paths it has felt warmer.
Two stories about the photos. The white monument is named Fat Betty. She is a wayside cross dating to the 13th century. There is a tradition that you stop and leave a treat and take a treat that someone else left.
The bridge was built in 1619. There was a poor young man who was in love with a wealthy landowners daughter. Since he was an unacceptable match, he went to sea and earned his fortune. When he came back he was able to marry the daughter. This bridge is his memorial to her. It is called the Beggars Bridge.
We drove a total of 3.5 hours to do a 2 hour bike ride today. BUT, we had a nice brunch midway through, we averaged 16 MPH on the last half (15miles each way), which is good for us, and I got to get ice cream on the way home. So, it was a pretty nice day.
Coast to Coast Day 17. Officially 17 miles but there was a trail diversion and GPS track was crap (showed dead straight line) where path was super curvy. Final fitbit data including walk back uphill to hotel after finishing was 47.1k steps and 268 flights of stairs.
It was a tough day with a long steep (30% grade) and miles across the moors. But we got some beautiful views along the coast and in some woods.
It was also really hot to hike (north of 80).
We are done and have some other activities planned before we fly home on Thursday.
I am trying not to think about re-entry into daily life.
I had a super nice morning. We’ve had two great days of weather. It rained steady all day yesterday, so the temps stayed in the 70s! And this morning, it was down to 60 with a 60* degree dewpoint. Forget how nice the 60* dewpoint can feel. Alas, tomorrow the dewpoint will start inching back up again.
My runs felt great and were faster than they’ve been in a year. Middle 20 min stairmonster was very strong too. Then Day 21 of Total Body Core. This is the last week of Phase 1. By this time, I am glad it’s the end and ready for new exercises. My sister went from being barely able to do 2 push-ups (with banded leg lifts in between reps) to 12,10 in 3 weeks. I know I’m a lot stronger, but it would be nice to see such progress! I just get to work on depth & power in my 15 reps.
I played pickleball for 2 hours this morning. My shoulder hurt before I played, and after it hurt even more. I can tell it hurts the most when I do the serving motion. Hopefully it’s nothing serious, but I am worried. I’ve had an impingement injury, bursitis, frozen shoulder and maybe something else in that shoulder already.
ETA - I have spent over 300 bucks on PB equipment (paddle, balls, and a portable net - our parks don’t have PB nets) over the last couple of months, so I really hope I don’t have to stop playing.
I also rode my indoor bike for 12 or so miles. I haven’t paid much attention to the challenges my watch offers, but the July one is to double move goal 9 times. I’ve done that 4 times so far, but don’t know that I’ll make 9.
So, do you warm up and stretch your shoulders regularly or even before playing? While not the same thing, I spend 10-15 minutes minimum warming them up as well as my other body parts before I begin to do anything exercise-related. I use a combination of a roller, roller ball and resistance bands to really give my shoulders and back a good work out before I even touch anything else in the gym.
And you’ll probably roll you eyes on this suggestion, but I do it. Since your strong shoulder takes the brunt of the work in daily life, and exercise, many, many years ago, I began developing and using my weaker arm and shoulder. I wouldn’t say that I’m amphibious () either before or now, but I do use my weak side a lot to re-distribute the workload as it were.
Amphibious - made my laugh! I’m assuming you mean ambidextrous.
I have not warmed up my shoulders, and if you have any easily described warm up exercises or a good source (for “normal” people) please pass them along - I want to start.
I am left handed, and I eat and write with my left hand. BUT, I do almost everything else, including play PB, with my right hand. I have debated trying to play PB with my left hand, but it would torture people willing to play with my for awhile.
