Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

I played just under 2 hours of pickup soccer on Sunday AM and everything felt fine.

I keep doing my thing. Lots of pickleball lately (at least twice a week, most weeks more) but do walking or biking when I’m not doing PB, and I’m doing shoulder exercises/stretches every day.
We have a 6 day bike trip coming up in August, so I’m trying to do more riding too, both indoors when it’s too hot, and outdoors.

The weather for soccer last night was just gross-- hot and super humid.

But it was still a blast and I’m no more worse for wear than usual. I also scored a hat trick which was nice.

It’s really sad when the clothes coming out of the washer are FAR dryer than the clothes on your body after a workout. The disgusting weather factor is through the roof and it’s not looking any better for the foreseeable future.

That being said, physically I’ve felt better than I have in at least a year. I’m starting to feel like myself again. I really like this program. I think today was day 29. Total Body Core. Lots of compound movements and things that just sneak up on you.

I did 30-45 minutes of swimming today, was very encouraged to see that I dropped almost 2 pounds. Back to normal weight now. So let’s see if I can keep it up for a while. Next week, I’m going to do more outdoor activities, I’m going camping, we’ll sort of, staying in a motel without air conditioning that is, just a fan I think. But we’ve been here in 2019, despite the rustic motel, we had an amazing time kayaking, frolicking in the lake, we were like 2 teenagers again, lol.

Today I did another 30 minutes of swimming, the water was very cool, very refreshing. But I’m adding more sit ups and more arm exercises to my floor exercise routine, why, I was invited to a screening of my daughters movie, I need to look my best, whatever that is, or the right to bare arms, haha. My under arms can use a bit more toning, right now it’s flabby.

Haven’t posted much lately, but today’s workout was such a cluster that I came by to say hi. The online trainer had a lot of technical difficulties and ended up going to an online video including a warmup I’d already done so I was riding the bike until it caught up to the actual workout, but then I got a call and the doorbell rang twice. The doorbell never rings. UGH. Just couldn’t ever get in the workout groove and no endorphins. Harumph. But glad everyone is keeping at it!

I played PB this morning for 90 minutes just using my left hand. I’m about as good as the 2 people I played with, even left handed. BUT, there are people better than they are that play is our bigger group, and I wouldn’t be competitive with many of them left handed. If I keep practicing I’m pretty sure I’ll “get there” within the next couple of months.

I did another 35-40 minutes of swimming, the pool was not empty, however it’s pleasant. A few people swimming than before.

This week was rough. Just a bad stressful week where everything seemed to fall apart. I am so tired of bad customer service. Workouts were definitely a highlight, but by the end of the week I was just wiped out. The weather is so horrible. It doesn’t help. What did help were the two 2 hour naps I had yesterday and today. I feel 20 years younger when I get up.

Today was one of those days where my legs felt good getting up, but once I started running they just said no. I thought they might loosen up, but it never happened. I just got more dehydrated. Somehow I made the little over 10 miles. I went a way I haven’t gone in over a year. It is an anti scenic route, all boarded up and dilapidated businesses and sketchy motels, but it’s straight with a sidewalk and not super hilly, though the turnaround loop in the nice neighborhood is very hilly. Anyhow, a change in scenery, even an ugly one, was nice.

Then I did the first week of phase 2 cardio flow. 6 reps of each exercise vs 4. I always feel better once I’m done with that one. And then abs and stretching.

I have been on a long road trip vacation (with lots of set changes seeing various family/friends on the east coast) almost 2 weeks. I have only run once… oh well… there will be plenty of time to run a lot (and weed the garden!) when we get back home next month. This weekend has been great, seeing our son and his fiancée who we’ve not seen since last Sept. Will see them again next weekend at a family reunion along with a 2nd visit with 95 year old Dad. Life is good, even if fitness has gone to a very light level.

Yesterday I couldn’t go swimming as planned because I had to work my compost bin in the morning, I harvested a lot of compost to plant my 16 plants of hostas. I tried to conserve water by having one shower a day. If I went swimming in the morning I had to have a shower after that. In the evening after working the compost bin, I had to have another shower, hence the reason to skip it.
Yesterday, I did plenty of lifting 5-gallon Home Depot container filled with dirt/clay, pushing a huge compost bin(64xgallon), I was getting nervous I would hurt myself just right before I go on a vacation, all that heavy lifting didn’t hurt my back, so that was a plus.

But today, I was able to swimming for 30 minutes, taking it easy day relaxing day. While it doesn’t seem like I do a vigorous exercise, I rather do something than nothing.

I walked 4.? Miles in the heat this morning, and then rode my indoor bike 26 miles.
I have been trying not to wash my hair so much, so even though I worked out a lot today, I decided I won’t wash it til after PB tomorrow.
I’ve got nothing planned for today, so it really doesn’t matter.

I love hostas but fear they would die in the Texas heat.

Funny but I’ve also been trying to shower less. Looks like we’re all trying to conserve water.

I plant most of my hostas underneath a palm tree, where nothing grows.

I try to avoid daily schedules that would require multiple showers and changes of clothes. Admittedly that is only partially due to the wanting to save water. I am also lazy.

I worked out with a different online trainer today, just to mix it up. Can’t say I loved him, but I do think it’s good to mix it up, you know? I follow a coach on Twitter who said something recently that stuck with me … basically, he said that while it’s good to listen to your body and take breaks when you need to, if you always work out to the level of “how you feel” that day and never have objective goals for your training then you won’t get better. So, I thought I would try a different trainer to see what else is out there. Interestingly, my heart rate was in the same range as my usual workouts (spiking into the 150s), but I was SWEATING. So, I’ll call it a success. Not sure I’ll do him many times – wasn’t a fan of his cadence – but it was an interesting experience.

That trainer’s advise sounds right. But it made me realize that (for better or worse) I don’t have much desire to get better. Just want to keep from declining, which of course might mean needing to up my game as I get older.

I agree. If I listened to my body today, then I probably wouldn’t have worked out. You do have to listen to your body, but often, you just have to power through it, which I did today. I had my Nespresso at the gym, warmed up and began squatting a 6x6 at 80% of 1RM (one rep max).

And I strongly believe that changing your programming or your programming changing in cycles, is best for your overall health. We have a saying: “Varied, but not random.”

My programming runs in 6-week cycles. Some movements are emphasized while others are either de-emphasized or not done. And then the cycle changes and the reverse could happen. Rep and set schemes change, even during a cycle, for both hypertrophy and strength training.

Also, changing your routine, keeps things interesting, which is important to me. I enjoy varied programming, because I have “exercise ADD.”

I did vary my routine, I drove 6 hours to my vacation spot yesterday. I’m glad I drove because my husband said the drive was so boring he couldn’t keep his eyes opened, he’s drifting to sleep. He prefers to drive in England.
So we went to our breakfast place and saw deer coming very close to us. A nice change from our life in the city/suburbs.
Today when the weather gets better, we might try one of these two activities, not sure yet which. It’s raining this morning, so it’s kind of unpredictable.

Boating

Or kayaking
