Of course. But being this was an exercise /wellness thread I thought it was worthy to talk about and het tips from others.
I didn’t tell my kids one time to “watch before you cross the street” - I told them over and over because it’s an important safety habit! IMO, any age, it’s good to be reminded how to be safe. Running, walking, biking, skateboarding, crossing the street!
Whether I’m running on the road or on the trail, my only concern is those freakin’ bicyclists. Where I live, they’re ubiquitous. Hate them with a passion.
And if one would stop long enough, after I tell them to go “you know where,” then I’d be happy to “explain” to them the rules of the road for normal human beings.
Oh I know. If you just knew how many times I’ve heard around here how dangerous it is, and how I should run with a gun (! No chance!), you’d understand why I might get a bit defensive.
Agree that bicyclists can be a pain. On one of my walking paths they now have separate sections for “wheels and heels.”
To catch up on the week.
Monday- we took a longer way to dinner so we did basically 5 miles round trip.
Tuesday- typical Tuesday of 90 minutes of soccer (~7K of steps)
Thursday-- 1st coaching session with my HS girls. Ended the day with north of 9K of steps
Friday–2 miles each way to dinner
tomorrow-- I will be on fields either a student or instructor from 10-5:30 (or longer)
Our one paved trail isn’t good for bikers. It has a 15mph speed limit, but worse is that there aren’t many straight sections. Lots of tight meanders and bends which is nice for a scenic walk, but not for a fast biker. We don’t have many road bikers either, but they tend to stay on the county roads. And those are dangerous with all the blind curves and hills. I think every biker I know has wrecked at some point. That’s one main reason I never did an Ironman. Bike was too $$$ but also too dangerous for me.
My local lake trail (3.5 miles around) luckily is wide and mostly flat. About half is paved, half dirt. Most of it is unshaded, tough in summer but good for having sun0-dried trail most of the year. When I need to pass, usually I can just say “on your left” until the person(s) moves over. (During the worst part of covid, it was more congested - outdoor walking was one of the allowed activities, sometimes with big multigenerational walking groups. In a way, I do miss seeing that.)
When I bike it, sometimes I do wish I had a little bell. Any recommendations for a bell device that would be easy to install?
It was the pre-fall season coaching education day. In the morning, I watched a 90 minute session on organizing/running practices. In the afternoon I co-taught sessions for new coaches and 3rd grade coaches and then watched a session for 1st/2nd grade coaches and then helped answer questions from coaches at that session.
Once that was done, I went a concert that involved a fair amount of bouncing which fitbit interprets as steps.
I think the wandering om fields got me north of 15K steps and I ended the day at just under 17K.
Played an hour of soccer yesterday morning. We got the field at 9AM and it was still locked so we had to call the county to get it open. We also found that the field was going to be in use starting at 10:45 (even though the master schedule didn’t show it) so we ended up with a limited window.
For our weekend game, we don’t have a field permit and play on what fields aren’t in use by users with permits so it is incredibly annoying when the master schedule isn’t updated correctly.
My wife and took the 3+ mile path to dinner, toss in the 1 mile home and I had another 17K step day.
Well today’s the big day. I get my shingles shot! lol. Can’t say I feel any different and it felt like just another day. Many years I make a workout based on my age, but this year I just kept going with the 80 day program. I did have a good run even though my legs were sore. I picked it up some but not too much cuz I didn’t want to hurt myself today of all days. But 5 out of the 7 plus miles averaged around 7:45 pace. I’ll take it. Then 20 sore min on the stairmonster followed by abs, my yoga progression, and peak week leg day.
Speaking of the yoga progression, here’s a photo collage of it. While I’ll likely never be thrilled with the shape I’m in, I know my 70 year old self would smack me in the head. And hey, I am 50 now. Can’t imagine my grandma or even my Mom doing this at 50.
This week is my 10 year running anniversary. I started just shy of my 53rd bday. Maybe weird but a couple of years in it became sort of a goal for me to be able to say “I was a runner for 10 years”. Well, here we are.
I don’t and have never been a distance runner and lately while I still run 2-3 times a week for 2-3ish miles I have settled in my mind with that I can do those runs but that there are other forms of exercise that give me the same mental and physical benefits I’m looking for. I would not say that I’ve been someone who has got a regular “running high” but lots of satisfaction every time I finish a run - even 10 years later.
Never say never. And make the most of what you can do!
I though of y’all this morning when I went for a walk in my neighborhood in the dark. I used to walk with a neighbor at 7 who recently moved but forget thought and I went at 6. I was already dressed to go when I realized how dark it was but went anyway. Interestingly, I saw two young girls walking. I think I scared them so they started running then went back to walking when they got a good distance away. What were these kids doing out at 6:30 a.m.? I’m talking they were about 12 tops.
