Had my 1st soccer double of the fall soccer season.
I coached my 1st graders for 60 , ate dinner and then went and played 90 minutes of soccer.
The one thing I have to figure out is how to do dinner better. I had to cook after coaching which put my dinner time uncomfortably close to when I played.
I’m certainly not “hard core” like some of you, but my watch says I’ve met all of my goals for something like 160+ days.
Today I walked my son’s dog (he’s on his honeymoon, and we have their pets with us for the duration). I had a pickleball lesson for 90 minutes, and rode my bike for 24 miles.
Wow - why the hate for bikers? I ride mostly on paths, and on some roads with very light traffic. I always give warning when I’m going to pass someone, and have been thanked many times for doing so. I wouldn’t mind dedicated bike and walking lanes or whatever, but I believe it’s much safer to be riding on a path than riding in traffic around where I live. I get frustrated with walkers too, especially when they’re walking 3 or 4 across and/or don’t pay attention to verbal signals, but still try to share the path appropriately.
I can’t speak for others, but I was not referring to the casual biker who does give warning. I was talking about those going by 20-30mph just barely moving over enough to not hit you without warning. Casual bikers do ride on our trail and they are fine.
I was trying to look up the levels of bike riders that we would reference for design of facilities, but I’m not having much luck. They change things all of the time. But if I recall, level A was for those types of people very comfortable on all roads who would prefer a bike lane, but would still ride without most places. Level B is like yourself (and me). Definitely prefer a trail, then lanes. Probably wouldn’t ride on roads unless very low volume. Level C was for kids/elderly who definitely need their own path or a very low volume residential road.
I believe most complaints are the level A users on the bike paths…
Thanks all for the well wishes. I appreciate it! Yesterday was a really nice day. Nothing for me today. I definitely don’t feel amazing after the shingles shot. Not horrible - just headache/body aches and I slept terribly - but enough to know better than to get up at oh dark thirty and run/lift. At least I know it’s working. I am at work today. It’s either sit here and plunk on a keyboard or sit at home.
@Youdon_tsay Our middle school starts at 7am here too, so kids are waiting for buses between 6-6:30. But here they wouldn’t be walking far. Buses seem to stop at everyone’s house now.
@sushiritto no interest in doing that. I like the zen aspect of yoga’s inversions. For me, it feels good to be upside down, unless I have a headache of course…
Well, if you’ve ever been running on a quiet trail and then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, a mountain biker descends a hill, crosses the path right in front of you, so they don’t have to slow down their descent, and almost gives you a heart attack, you would understand the hate I have for some bikers. And this is not an isolated incident.
And then there are the packs of dozens and dozens of road bicyclists, which whiz by me road running, with little room for error.
And I’m not a small out-of-shape guy running out there.
I used to run a lot on the gym’s treadmill to avoid this crap, but my gym’s new Curved Manual Treadmill, is not made for long distances.
Was shocked after the HS girls practice last night. My wife and I had walked to breakfast (cleaning lady day) which is 2 miles but after practice I discovered I was at over 5 miles for the day. I knew I had moved a ton during practice but was surprised at the amount
Checking in today. The shingles shot has reminded me of my last booster shot last October. I never felt horrible, but I just don’t feel good - body aches and headache. And a pink sore shoulder… And going on day 3. But on Tylenol/Advil I feel completely normal. Yesterday, I waffled on getting up and working out since I felt blechy. But I took Advil (at 4am) and went with the intention of stopping if it felt bad at all. It never did. Felt fine. And I felt great until about 1. Tried to hold off on meds until 2. And after that I felt normal until when I got up with morning.
So I did the same this morning. Took two Advil and tentatively set out. Felt perfectly normal and did my 12 miles and finished 80 day obsession - booty day. Admit that was hard after 12 miles. But now I feel fine again. The effects from the covid booster lasted about 3 days I think. Hopefully that will be the same here. 72 hours is up later this morning. And then I get to repeat the process with the omicron booster this Friday. And then the flu shot… I may wait until end of October for that. And I also need tetnus updated. I may combine that with the flu. We will see. Just call me the human pincushion
@ClassicMom98 I feel like a pincushion as well. Second booster was in July and then second shingles shot in August. Now I am looking at getting the new omicron booster as well as flu shot and see where they suggest you get them together.
Haven’t been as active the last few days. Had a bit of pain in my inner knee starting on Sunday. Ran 5 on Wednesday and while I was fine when running, my knee has hurt since. Picked up some CBD cream yesterday and that does help (I call it my “hippie Ben-Gay”).
We rode our bikes over 30 miles around and into DC. We don’t do that very often, and it was fun. That, along with dog walks for son’s dog is plenty of exercise for me.
My watch says I’ve done my 500+ exercise calories (plus whatever other rings it tracks, I think) each day for over 160 days.
I walked a lot yesterday, almost 2-3 miles, why, my husband used google map and was misled, so we ended up walking back from the bus stop we were dropped off. I almost tempted to call taxi but decided to just walk for exercise.
1st coaching weekend (3 games yesterday and 1 today) of the day plus 2 pro matches= ton of steps.
With my HS and 4th grade team the steps are just wandering the sideline and getting to fields.
With the 1st graders, I’m on the field so lots of steps.
For the game last night, we parked a mile away, today we took subway and then walked to stadium.
Final step counts: yesterday was 18.3K steps and today was 11.6K.
Other funny story of day-- we went to our local Mexican joint for a consolation drink following a soul sucking loss for the men’s pro team. DW had 2 and I chose to have 1 and be designated driver. As we were leaving, the bartender handed me a to go margarita, on the house, as a reward for making good choices
Another week in the books. Tough week workout wise. Just felt rough. I started a new 4 week program thinking it would be easy because it’s only 30 min. And in some ways it is easy, especially since week 1 is supposed to be easy, but it did a lot of jumping things which are always hard on my legs. Running on top was rough. Yesterday, they just said no, so I did the stairmonster and bike instead. Good choice, since they felt so much better by the afternoon.
Which was just in time for our covid boosters. We got them late around 7pm so I wasn’t sure how I’d feel this morning. Got up at 4 and my shoulder barely hurt and I felt normal, so off I went on my long run. I did just run shorter loops around my house in case I felt the need to bail. I never did and the time went by so much faster than during the week. Almost 12 hilly miles complete. Oh! It’s also 50 degrees now! Yay! But by the time I finished, I noticed my shoulder was a lot more sore. I just had abs and stretching to do, so I finished. We will see how the shot reaction progresses from here. No plans to do anything else.
Good article - thanks. Good timing, since on another thread topic about Fun vs Enjoyment, I’ve contemplated the related factor of Satisfaction from accomplishments
My luck finally ran out and I came down with COVID last Friday (11 days after my bivalent booster). TBH-- it wasn’t horrible, it felt like a bad head cold/allergies. I only tested because we were going to spend the evening hanging out with DW’s family.
Given my age and risk factors (yippie for BMI of just over 30), I got Paxlovid. It truly was a miracle drug because I felt better after just a couple of days and close to normal now.
The downside is that I’ve done nothing for a week.
In other fitness news, DW and I have booked our next big adventure. An 8 day barge and bike tour in the Netherlands. You sleep on a barge in a river/canal, get up in the morning and ride to another town and meet back up with the barge. We will go in in early July of 2023.
What a great vacation life and marriage partnership to agree on these adventures!!
Sorry about the Covid. Even more sorry that you had the bivalent booster but still got it. I’m guessing that it was a little early after your booster when you actually contracted it.
On COVID-- it seems like best protection is about 2 weeks so I just missed.
On the trip/partnership-- yep, I’m pretty lucky. Next summer is our 30th anniversary. We plan to spend the actual anniversary visiting Crater Lake and doing some day hikes.
