One of the benefits of getting is old is that it’s becoming easier and easier to do quite well in competitions. Let’s face it, older people don’t seem to compete in big numbers.
Anyway, I ran a 10K trail run in the AM. Here comes the excuse. My dog and I slept terribly. I’m an average runner and lo and behold, I finished roughly in the middle of the pack, but near the top of my age group. The trail sucked. Straight up for 3 miles and straight down for 3 miles. I won’t do that race again unless they change the course.
Later that day (today ), a local CF gym had a friendly comp. They don’t tell you the workout beforehand, so when I arrived we all waited for them to post the workout. I’m thinking to myself, it’s going to be more running and burpees. And guess what, yay!, more running and burpees, but a couple of other things.
Part 1, establish a 1RM (rep max) front squat in 14 minutes.
Part 2, 5 rounds of a 400m run, 18 GHD situps and 9 burpee box jumpovers, with a 30 minute time cap.
I knew right away, I would get killed in the front squat. I’m actually pretty darn good for my age and weight, but there were no age groups and no weight classes, so I was going to get wiped out without a doubt. I got to about 90% of older Sushiritto max, but let’s face it, I’m competing against 25 year old men and women, who have quads and hammies the size of old redwood tree trunks.
Now, on the run, situps and burpees, I did kick SOME butt. I wasn’t the best for sure, but I was Top 10. Age group-wise, I was #1, but so what. Competition in the older age groups gets very thin nowadays.
