@ClassicMom98 --It really was fun. As I said, I layered up well so I wasn’t cold. It was just wet. The weather definitely changed the game but it was interesting to try and solve the puzzles.
I got nothing to report for fitness today. But hey, my minivan has a new set of brakes.
Ugh, I know how it feels to be derailed by illness and injury. Here’s to hoping you are back on the road soon. Do you have access to a pool? When I used to run I was plagued by foot, knee and back/neck problems that frequently benched me. I found swimming to be a great way to still feel like I was doing something while I had to sit things out.
Missed my tennis game on Monday, but did get a long (5 mile) walk in so the day wasn’t a total washout. Enjoyed my lunch time pickleball at work yesterday – bonus was that a few of the student athletes who were in the fitness center spontaneously joined our games - they definitely brought an energy and athleticism to our match that was exhausting (in the best way).
Today is a tennis day. Our days are numbered for this season…
I’m trying to figure out what I’m going to do over the winter to keep my momentum going. Since I’ve gone back to tennis 2xweek + pickleball 1xweek, I’ve seen noticeable changes in my fitness and muscle tone. I’m not a scale watcher, but I can see in the mirror that overall I have gotten leaner. Would like to keep that up for the winter.
One thing that I’ve learned about myself in the last few years is that community and fun are what keeps me motivated to exercise. A group fitness class or a sport is really the best way for me to stay active.
The first and best step is often realizing what you are willing and likely to do. Does the fitness center have some classes you could take over the winter? Spinning is something that would be the cardio and endurance that you get likely in tennis/PB. Though I guess you don’t have “teammates” and can’t talk a lot during spinning!
No pool locally that I know of unless join the Y or a gym. I had been doing well with walking and yoga but being sick this week has derailed any fitness right now. Unfortunately I’m not much of a swimmer.
I got my DXA yesterday. Exactly what I expected. Of course, I knew I’d lost another five pounds since the last time, but what surprised me is that I was two days shy of my DXA last fall, and I am down more than 18 pounds since ds1’s wedding. After a year of being stalled, I can say that the IF has worked for me.
I lost the most fat in my torso and lost some muscle along with it. To be expected as I haven’t been concentrating on weights. But overall really good, for me. We talked about how my legs have changed as I’ve been riding the bike more and doing less weight work. Think of the difference in the two types of runners – sprinters and their larger thighs and long-distance runners with their lean legs.
Oh, and because @sushiritto is all about visceral fat, I can report that I am down to less than two pounds of it, which I am quite sure is appalling to him, but, hey, I started with almost five pounds so I am happy.
The one disappointing thing is that while they did update the software, they haven’t figured out how to generate the reports to take advantage of it. She said once they figure it out they can look at you bilaterally (am I using that correctly?) to evaluate your strong and weak side and that they can determine your amount of subcutaneous fat. We set the goal that next scan, in May, I would be eight pounds lighter.
Today my knees are getting better, I was able to do 2-3 squats. I need to do more to stretch the knees today, fewer squats but more frequent, I hope they will get back to normal soon. But yesterday I was able to do some light gardening work, like fertilizing my peonies. I rather keep moving vs just plopping down on my couch.
Very interesting! As a casual runner, I never really put that together in my mind but you’re right - sprinters often muscular thighs, long distance often lean and long!
That’s wonderful. 5 lbs is not good, but less than 2 lbs is excellent! Congrats!
Personally, I prefer the sprinter’s legs. At the gym, I admire the men and women who have big quads, thighs, calves and glutes. I think they’ll have a sturdier “base,” as they age.
When they measured my fat level at the gym, even before I lost all my weight, I was not in fat or obese level. They used something to pinch my leg, if memory serves.
The body fat pinch test is one method of assessing body fat. Hydrostatic or Dexa would be more accurate methods of testing, but they require either lying down submersed in a tank of water or lying down on a table for a scan.
@sushiritto, mine was free, I’m glad I didn’t have to pay.
Today my knees are getting better through a series of stretching, so I decided to go to my art class. After painting 4 hours, mostly standing up, I think I’m getting my body back.
I will do more squatting today. This exercise seems to help.
Is it bad when you schedule a Tdap shot on a Thursday, hoping you’ll feel bad enough to use sick time to take off work early Friday, but not bad enough that you’re actually miserable? I got my tetnus shot last night. That makes Shingles 1, covid, flu, and Tdap in the last 2 months. Shingles 2 will be either in Dec or Jan.
When the alarm went off, I toyed with sleeping in, but I felt fine. My arm just barely hurt. So off I went. I did cut short the run to 45 min and spent 30 on the stairmonster. Then abs, stretching, and home to the freezing cold shed gym for the Push workout. By the end my arm was definitely hurting more. I didn’t get achy until a couple of hours ago. Not bad, but good enough to take Advil and fill out that leave slip! lol Hopefully, I’ll be good enough for the longer run tomorrow.
Well the joke was on me. I felt worse yesterday evening and took some Tylenol at dinner. Didn’t seem to do much, so I added NyQuil to help me sleep. Oh my. It didn’t. That was by far the worst I’ve felt from a shot in a long time. I would have believed I had the flu except I wasn’t coughing. I did though finish putting up the inside Xmas decorations so the dust kicked up my allergies some and my eyes were all gooey and red too. Ugh.
I felt a bit guilty going to bed saying I would skip my workout, but in the middle of the night it was obvious it was the right call. This body couldn’t have run 1 mile much less 12. I do remember I reacted strongly to my last couple of tetanus shots, but I think I repressed the memory of how bad. Ugh. I feel somewhat better now, but I took Advil in the middle of the night and this morning. This will be a lazy weekend! And I think I’ll put off the second shingles shot until January (4 month Post first). I’m not in any hurry to do this again.
I got some sort of crud on Thursday (lots of congestion), which I’m sure is unrelated to playing int the rain on Tuesday
Only exercise this weekend was wandering around soccer fields as my HS girls teamed played in their post-game tournament. They won all 4 games and thus won their division. It was super fun
@jmnva06 my like was for your girls victories, not your crud. I am sorry. I am sort of there with you. I’m hanging out in our employer’s urgent care parking lot awaiting results for a strep test. Now they say they might run flu too. My reaction to the tdap has been too weird and I’m wondering if I didn’t pick something up with it. No fever, congestion, cough at all. Just severe sore arm (almost better), body aches (somewhat better) and swollen glands in neck (getting worse by the day). And now I just have that sick feeling instead of annoying symptoms. Ugh. This blows. This is day 4!
UPDATE - it’s strep! Yay!!! Actually that is good news. I’ll get over that quickly then
@jmnva06 and @ClassicMom98 - sorry you are both under the weather. Take care and sending wishes for quick recoveries.
It’s like we are all that 1 year old just starting child care and picking up all the illness things after being sequestered with COVID for a couple years! So many people have been sick the last month or so.
Knock on wood, I haven’t picked anything up. Hope to keep dodging the illness bullet!
Started the short work week with a nice tabata HIIT routine this morning and a very, very chilly pup walk before work this morning.
I had such a reaction to my variant booster that I went to the dr and was tested for flu and Covid. Both negative, but, man, 102+ fever and chills and general yuck.
