Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Driving into ANY busy downtown is no fun. Good luck and fingers crossed! I am lucky to live in a town with 4 MRI facilities located in relative boonies. I was even asked which one I wanted to go… I always avoid the one at the hospital because… hospital facilities fees. Ugh.

There are several near home and work, but I’m sure this medical group wants the $$$ so they send you to their own facility!

Had a glorious day xc skiing yesterday, the weather was perfect 18 degrees and sunny. We were going to go back today but our predicted snow came in early (we skied in snow a couple of weeks ago, it was not fun!) so I did a turn around the neighborhood in the snow. It was nice.

Here’s hoping the weather stays cold and that I’ll be able to get some skiing in this week coming up.

I rode 18 miles on the bike at the gym today. I did 7.5 minutes on the rowing machine, and did lots of other machines also. I only made it to the gym once this week. I walked 4 miles around our neighborhood yesterday, which was better than nothing.

@deb922

I used to love cross country skiing with my kids. I haven’t been…in years. What a great way to enjoy winter!

@1214mom - That sounds like a decent weekend of exercise. Good job!

My 15 y.o. son and I did one of those climbing, balancing, adventure ropes courses today. I’m not a huge fan of heights, so that part wasn’t my favorite but being able to do something fun outdoors with my kid and getting a really great core and upper body workout at the same time was a bonus.

That’s one of the things that keeps me active. Growing up, my mom was very obese - and that was when obese people weren’t as common as they are now. She wasn’t able to do any activities with us. I want to be able to swim, bike, kayak, jump rope and do things with my kids.

I’ve been watching the used market for a Concept 2 Skierg, which is one of their rowers reengineered into an indoor cross country ski exercise machine. It’s a great home workout machine, like a rower or bike.

A day of rest for me. I took a day off. Six hard days in a row. My body deserved a rest to recover. And Monday’s workout is very long.

Let’s give ourselves a hand as we get ready for a new week. Look at the variety here! A majority of people over age 50 (apologies to anyone NOT yet 50!) doing everything from swimming, to biking, to weigh lifting, to running, skiing, yoga retreats, Cross fit- really such a testament to active lifestyles middle age and on!!

Amen! Collectively, we are killing it! (I need some serious work out he food front- especially after this weekend at my retreat. Why do things like that have loads of really awful junk food in the hospitality room?)

My introduction.

I’m 50ish and probably in better aerobic shape than in anytime in my life. I play soccer 1-2 times per week in a super chill non-competitive environment. I can run all night long which is a great advantage late in the game. I can get under nearly any long ball over the top for the full 90 minutes.

I need to do more weight stuff but that has been true for 20 years. It is tough to do when I have meetings 2-3 nights per week.

My fitness goals are to drop 20+ pounds and to keep my aerobic fitness.

@jmnva06 welcome! Hope this doesn’t sound weird but are you a male? Sometimes it’s good to know and well, men or woman could be playing soccer!!!

@abasket . My apologies for not specifying. I’m a male.

I’ll add a couple of other things. My base walking mileage (commute+ walking around the office to meetings) is 3 miles. Playing 90 minutes of soccer yields anywhere from 2 to 4+ miles (recent record was 4.5 but I average about 3.

I terrible about food and dieting but hope to get things under control this year. My goal is tiny (-10 pounds by the end of the year) but I need to be realistic about my habits.

Welcome @jmnva06. You soccer endurance is admirable. Not sure if this would work for you (ha, especially if you are a tee-totaler) … but based on timing I’ll mention that my brother-in-law avoids alcohol during lent and usually loses a few pounds as side benefit.

Welcome @jmnva06 ! Glad to have you.

Very definitely not a teetotaler :).

Part of my self care routine is time in the bar after playing.

If I can kill post dinner snacking then I will be in a good place

It’s Monday so that means Meatless Monday for me in 2020, one of my goals for myself in 2020. That said, I’ve been trying to keep the meatless also fairly healthy - I mean, mac and cheese is meatless even if it’s loaded with cream and cheese but not really an example of a healthful meal!

I’ve been doing lots of things with chickpeas. Of course lots of vegetables. Haven’t experimented with tofu yet.

If anyone has any simple fav meatless meals to share I’m all ears!

“If I can kill post dinner snacking then I will be in a good place” - Ditto. The problem is that I have to get up very early for work and don’t want any more excuses (like hunger) keeping me up in addition to worries about work / family etc

No recipes to share, but I’ve been trying to reduce my intake of animal protein. I don’t think I’ll ever completely eliminate it, but a few meals here and there each week, in the past couple of months, have been just vegetarian.

The meals that I typically order for my lunches at work have been more vegetarian and my breakfast scrambles, like this morning, have been just vegetables no ground turkey (or chicken) 100% of the time.

However, all meals will remain low fat and I will continue to eat essentially (not 100%) Paleo and Whole 30. I’m not 100% any type of diet, I’m diet “agnostic,” except meals must be healthy.

After a day off, I’m feeling great. Ready to “rock and roll” for this evening’s workout.

Got through my MRIs and even the rush hour drive into town wasn’t terrible. They did the hip MRI first and I was totally in the machine for that one. I kept my eyes shut and did have earphones and music, but I couldn’t hear it very well with all the noise from the MRI. Next was the knee MRI and my chest and head were out of the machine, so it was a piece of cake. Not sure when I’ll get the results. Soon, I hope. Did 3.1 treadmill miles this morning. Knee wasn’t great- it almost feels like a nerve thing. Not “pain” pain like with a stress fracture.
