I know he can hire all the best trainers and such so perhaps I shouldn’t be so skeptical.
I have no doubt he completed it, although I’d love to see a video of his reps. Just seems a bit “convenient” to beat a generally accepted marker by 0:02.
But it’s not keeping me up at night.
For the record, my gym’s owner is a CF Level 1 certified and signed off on my online submission.
I am working on a summer Biggest Loser challenge at my gym. Right now I am #4 but this week is slow going so far. I am trying to build muscle and mostly concerned with moving up in my dumbbell weights to get stronger. Right now I am using 12#s and I want to get to 15#s in… maybe 3 weeks?
I am also food journaling everything. It is OK. Giving up most sugar, most junk food, most wheat…
It is OK. I have been doing pretty well with it.
Oddly I have put the Apple rings on my phone and am not closing them at all but I am down 12 pounds so… it’s OK . It’s OK that my progress is slowing a little, too. I’m in for the long haul with a goal to drop 40.
Great attitude! You’re plugging away and making some gains (or losses!). Remember that building muscle might actually cause weight “gain” - but in the best way - in firmer muscle!
You can change your goals on movement on your Apple Watch.
You can also see your trends on the health app on your phone. I might suggest changing the goal on movement to what’s you are consistently doing and then up it every week to give yourself a bit of a challenge. I find it works for me.
But great job!
^^^This. That’s why the # on the scale isn’t the best measure of your progress.
There’s a Meta middle manager that works out at the gym. At the end of my workout last evening, he came up to me asked about my Murph and then mentioned Zuck’s FB/IG post.
He thought a healthy dose of skepticism about Zuck’s exercise accomplishment(s) was justified.
I just texted my LEO son. His Rx’d Murph time was 34:11. He hopes to break 34:00 next year. It’s nice to be young.
Nice! You ought to be proud of that.
LOL - I am still dithering on whether to buy 4lb dumbells. I mostly use the 3LB, sometimes 4lb (combo off 3+1/2+2… but awkward). I had 6lb and opted last year to get 5lb. Alas, those new 5lb were too much.
I believe OCR (Obstacle Course Race) Champion, Hunter McIntyre, holds the world record for Murph at 34:13, so your son could be missing his calling. He just broke the world record with 34:11.
I spoke with the gym owner yesterday and he said he did the Murph again. He’s 42 years old and may become a police officer in another state, where his family lives most of the year. Interestingly, he told me he’s doing TRT (testosterone replacement therapy), which is an injection 2x week (?).
I told him I take a pill, one each day. I think it’s called a One-a-Day.
The times posted on the Murph Challenge website are much lower than that. I wonder what the difference is?
My son might actually be built for exactly this, which is only useful one day per year. He beat his time last year by 9 seconds.
He’s more of a runner than a CrossFit person, so he makes up a lot of ground on other people during those 2 miles. He runs 5-7 miles most days. If he runs just one mile for time it would be sub-5 minutes. He finished second in the run in his LEO academy because a fellow recruit was a former professional runner from Puerto Rico.
He’s deceptively strong for his body type. He did 175 consecutive push-ups, without stopping and/or resting, during his final academy assessment. You can imagine how strict his instructors were with form. He also had the fastest time in the obstacle course.
He’s also only 23, weighs his food portions, eats ridiculously healthy and gets paid to work out for 60 minutes per shift. It’s the perfect storm.
Most of the Murph universe “modify” their workout in some way. “Rx” in theory should be “as prescribed,” with the weight vest, and legitmate reps. Even the best do get “no rep’ed.” So, I’m sure those posted results are mostly nonsense.
Trust me, no one is completing it in 15-20 minutes. Simply ridiculous. I think CF’s reddit thread would give you a much better indication of closer-to-legit results.
At the 2016 CF Games, the best male CF’er of all-time, 5-time champ Mat Fraser, finished the Murph in 34:38. And Fraser was an “animal.” He retired, because he won by a lot.
Honestly, a judge or judges would “no rep” 99% of the Murph particpants out there in the world for failing reps for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to, not getting full extension on the pullup, elbows locked, a complete squat, top to bottom, from full lock-out to proper depth with the hip crease below the knee, cheating the depth of the pushup, etc. As seen in the video posted above.
By the way, Hunter McIntyre, the Murph world record holder, is NOT a Crossfitter. He’s an obstacle course racer. CF gave him a much ballyhooed and controversial exemption to compete at the Games and he failed miserably.
At 34:11 your son is elite amongst elite athletes. If he positioned himself properly, then could make hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions, by competing in athletics, whether running, obstacle course racing, CF, etc. Endorsements would roll in.
ETA: Too much “Murph” talk. My apologies. I’ll move on now and I’ll get back to the thread here. 'Till next year!
Like you said, how many of his reps would get DQ’d?
I watched the video of Hunter’s Murph. That’s what pull-ups look like? Those are kip ups. I was a college gymnast. I could have done 500 of those.
He would probably hate doing things like that for money, knowing him. He’s wired to serve his community, whether as a LEO, or volunteering as an unpaid EMT 36-48 hours per month.
At this point I have no hope if we got into a tussle…and I can’t outrun him…so I’m in trouble. It sucks getting old.
Here’s the video, if anyone cares about a “Murph” in terms of world record:
For the record, there are strict pullups, kipping pullups and butterfly pullups. The butterfly technique employed by Hunter McIntyre is extremely difficult to learn and puts an enormous amount of stress on one’s shoulders.
But full extension is achieved and full lock out of the elbows is what a judge would look for.
Also, the Murph is a cardio exercise, not a strength building exercise, so the faster you can perform the exercises, the faster your heart rate. It’s all about work capacity.
My daughter did CrossFit for a long time.
Everyone who completed the Murph is amazing!
@GKUnion your son sounds like a great person. When my daughter did CrossFit, she met many military veterans and first responders. We have much respect for what they do.
She moved and things changed but CrossFit was a very important season of her life. Right now, her fitness is not what it was but she will get there. Because she loves working out, there are other issues at play.
A gym regular, a powerlifter, in the gym told me tonight that I inspired him to lose weight. And he’s not the first in the gym that I’ve inspired.
This gentleman is in his late 20’s, early 30’s, and weighs mid-300 lbs. He wants to get down to the mid-200’s.
Sometime back he asked me what he should do about losing weight and I asked him about his diet and cardio. It didn’t take long to figure out that he eats too much rice and lacks cardio.
Anyway, it’s his 1st week (lowered carbs) and he lost 4 lbs. Yay! It’s like I PR’ed tonight. Even though it’s a deload week, which is good, because my legs are dead.
The gym owner goaded me into repeating Murph today although I had a splendid workout programmed. He claimed he did it this morning before I arrived.
I told him I’d be lucky to finish today, but the great news is that I actually beat my record time from last year by exactly 1 minute. Three minutes faster than Monday. Woohoo!
I went with training shoes instead running shoes. Yep, I’m blaming it on the shoes.
Beast! Always going back for more!
Thank you. I’m very excited that I’m not getting old. Today at least.
I was truly disappointed this week after Monday. I’m not sure what happened. It’s not like I’m screwing around in the gym all year long.
In all your toughness and “can’t be beat” attitude, I love your sense of humor - we need it!
