Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

We are giving up meat for lent. I’m going to need to be super careful to not increase my carb intake in the process.

Feel better @Fallgirl !

I’m also fighting off a cold/sinus headache and hoo-boy I just want to SLEEP.

During my Saturday workout, I strained a muscle in the left upper side rib area. My medical diagnosis is an intercostal muscle strain, which are muscles between the ribs.

I took Sunday as a rest day and on Monday had a good workout with lots of squatting, toes to bar, burpees and cleans. But as you might guess, the pain came back last night during one of my exercises (muscle-ups, but on the down portion). I finished with just pull-ups instead, since that wasn’t as bothersome. So I had to dial my Tuesday workout WAY back, which really upsets me. The pain feels much better today after resting and taking Advil. Almost non-existent. Almost.

I know the smart thing to do is to stay away from the gym and take today as a rest day and maybe even Thursday too, but I’m having a difficult time trying to accept that “treatment” recommendation. I feel like I can get some things done, maybe even some running. My breathing seems to be relatively unaffected, but I haven’t had to cough or sneeze today. :smile: That would be a huge test.

I don’t know about you, but I am often really bad at following for my self the advice I would give my clients, lol. And yesterday, my daughter yelled at me because I was compromising range of motion while doing pull-ups with a heavy weight vest. I tried to con her by telling her I knew I was but that there was a specific training purpose to which she (rightfully) called “B.S.”. And then she went back to doing Turkish Get Ups with a 26 kg KB, in perfect form, the little show off!

I went ahead & trained today despite the cold/sinus congestion.

Surprisingly, it went well.

Now I’m glad I didn’t skip.

Turkish Get Ups, has the distinction of being the best exercise that I never do. :smiley:

That’s a classic. Good for her. Like I’ve never heard that excuse before. “I only want to train part of my muscle, not the whole muscle.” :lol:

@Midwest67 That’s awesome!

Must…stay…out…of…gym…today. :anguished:

Three rounds of snow shoveling our deck today. Not the kind of fitness I want to do!

@MomofWildChild I’m sorry about your lent give-up. I know it’s for the best. I know how hard it is to make that call. I hope that by making it a goal, it will be easier to stick to.

I’m sorry to all those who are sick and/or injured! Boo!!!

My workouts have been the same. I’ve been under a bit of stress from work/home front. Nothing truly major in the grand scheme of things, but my mind can quickly play out a thousand scenarios of all the bad potential outcomes. Ugh.

Today was my wellness check without working out first. This is only the 4th year that we’ve done it this way, so I don’t have many data points. All my numbers have always been “in the green” and their machines/methods aren’t the most accurate, but the cholesterol & blood pressure have been higher than my normal. Anyhow, today it was much closure to my normal. At my OB-GYN doing it the old fashioned way, my BP is always around 90-100/50-60. Today on their machine, it was 105/65 which was lower than the 120/80 before. And the cholesterol was about 20 points lower (170) than before and it got readings for everything this time which were all good. Those nurses love me. They say 90-95% are overweight with high BP/cholesterol issues and they are usually wide eyed when I tell them I’m almost 50.

It was nice sleeping in and I went at 6:30am. I was first in line and was done in 15 minutes. At 8am, I’m there for an hour, so I may do it this way again. And then I celebrated with a big bag of Chex Mix, a Reese’s Egg, and a Cadbury’s Caramel Egg. Breakfast of champions!

@abasket We have had no snow this year. Last week, we had 1" that didn’t stick to the roads. That’s been it. It’s been the warmest winter I can ever remember. The daffodils have been up for a month! I HATE the heat, so I’ve been bumming, especially since my allergy woes kicked in weeks ago and will be here in some shape or form until the first frost in November. The only bright side is how many hundreds of $$$ we’ve saved on the heating bills. I’m trying to hold on to that.

Thanks @ClassicMom98 . I haven’t been this restricted since 2014 when I had a hip area stress fracture that required me to be non-weight bearing. And then, since I was on crutches and working, I was quite active and got a good workout on the crutches. Hopefully just another month…

@MomofWildChild

You must be doing pretty well bc I have not seen anything in the news about any, uh, rage incidents in TN! :wink:

@sushiritto

How is the pulled muscle/something today?

@MomofWildChild - You’ve mentioned stress fractures a few times. Are you concerned with overall bone density or are the stress fractures tied specifically to something identifiable like the running?

@ClassicMom98

Those Cadbury mini-eggs with the hard candy shell? Addictive.

But eggs are good for us, right? Ha!

@abasket

I’m sorry about the snow! It might be my fault bc I was WILLING it to miss Chicagoland. We went from 12” projected to a dusting. Bullet dodged.

Sad news from the hiking club! Long time member 71 yo collapsed & passed away on the train. He had led a life of adventure! Hiked the AT. John Muir. Biked from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Multiple rim to rim to rim again hikes in the Grand Canyon. Rock climber. Scuba diver. Skier. Backpacker. Veteran.

A life well-lived! RIP Tom — you will be missed!

@Midwest67 Wine helps! :slight_smile:
@milee30 I do have osteoporosis, but none of my injuries are attributable to it. My injury rate really isn’t bad for 40 plus years of pretty heavy running. I’ve had 1979, 2005 (attributable to barefoot running and Vibram shoes), 2014, stress reaction in foot 2018 and now this. It sounds like a lot, but compared to a lot of other runners (especially females), it isn’t too bad. Unfortunately, injuries happen. Change of surface, change of shoes, just the continual pounding… I don’t like it, but in a way the stress fractures are easier to solve than tissue injuries or bursitis etc.

Well for the second time in 11 1/2 years with this company, I called in sick today. Just drinking a lot of tea and water and resting. Pretty sure it’s just a cold. Biggest bummer is that I will miss a party tomorrow night for a running buddy who is moving out of state.

No, I understand that’s not a bad injury rate for someone running the miles you do.

A few years ago when I was running high (for me anyway) miles, I started getting regular stress fractures. After my third in three years, I decided it wasn’t worth it to me so switched to doing a variety of things other than running. So far, that’s worked to stop the injuries but I do miss the running. It’s just so simple and rewarding; and a great way to see new areas. Just in the past few months I’ve been adding back running twice a week and so far, no injuries but I’m guessing that adding a third day would be pushing it.

Do you do anything to treat the osteoporosis?

I’ve done a few things for the osteoporosis but I’m in a no-meds stage right now. I did 2 years of Forteo shots and then tried the next med that is the every 6 month injection and didn’t like the side effects. I have an excellent doctor (leader in the field) and she is supportive of my opinion that the normal meds (Fosamax etc) can do more harm than good. She is on top of what new meds are in the approval process. I have had some pretty bad falls without breaking anything, which is a really good sign of bone strength, which is hard to measure (as opposed to the normal density measures). I do take calcium and Vit D (and now Vit K) and try to limit my diet colas.

@Midwest67 As I mentioned, I’m assuming it’s the intercostal (rib) muscle. As time goes by, it’s getting better just like several days ago. But then WHAM, the pain came back. I believe it to be mild, since I have no back pain and breathing, coughing and sneezing don’t cause any pain. Other than my mind knowing it’s there, that’s about it.

I stayed out of the gym yesterday, which is truly amazing for me. Now, the big question for me is whether I do a lighter/modified version of Wednesday’s programming or stay out one more day. Or run? Can I run? I don’t know.

I think I’ll plan to explore a few movements, like running, deadlifting, upside down stuff, etc.

Good luck @sushiritto ! That’s the tough call- what can I do? Should I do it?

You have a stress fracture. Remember, Brittany Runs a Marathon? Running is a big “No!”

We may have to institute a Fitness/Nutrition/Health bench for those who are sidelined and need - in some cases :wink: - to be tied to said bench. :slight_smile: Popcorn provided to those benched free of charge. :slight_smile:
