Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Apparently our Y where we usually go on Sundays, is going to be closed this Sunday for deep cleaning. DH (bless his heart) thinks we should go on Saturday. What do you think?

First time poster/ lurker on this thread. About to start couch to 5k today. I’m a teacher, forced Corona vacation for 2 weeks, and it’s time. It’s been a rough 6 months and I’ve lost my fitness and healthy eating habits, have gained weight, and feel lousy. Focus has been in my kids and work, and just have not made self-care a priority. Turning 50 in 2 weeks, looking for inspiration

Welcome @CTCape . We are all here to support each other. Couch to 5K is an excellent program. It’s been mentioned on here before that if you ever think that one of the progressions is too much, don’t hesitate to cut back and go at your own pace.

46 minutes on the elliptical over at the clubhouse, which Apple watch tells me is a new record. Yay, me. Knee fracture is feeling really well and when I got home I jogged 1 minute in front of the house as a test. Felt OK but I’ll be good and wait for the all clear (I hope) when I go back to the doc in 1 1/2 weeks (who’s counting?) When I got to the clubhouse there was just one other person but a few others arrived- topped out at 5 people by the time I was leaving. It feels pretty safe virus-wise.

@CTCape

Welcome! I have heard so many good things about Couch to 5K!

The GREAT thing about being unconditioned and just getting started is you make gains quickly.

I really do think this is under-appreciated by many people who are feeling discouraged with being out of shape and feel like they are staring at a giant hill.

Get started, baby steps, and you WILL make leaps in improvement.

I wish I could still add 2.5-5 pounds to the bar every training session on every lift! Gains come more slowly now and feel like a whole lot more work to get them.

You can do it! Happy Birthday!

Happy upcoming birthday, @CTCape ! And welcome. Yes, couch to 5k has been successfully used by many here. I went from not being able to run a mile to running a marathon when I was in my late forties.

@CTCape welcome! I’ve quoted Elle Woods from Legally Blonde here on CC many times:

It’s never too late to start or re-start.

@MomofWildChild I would never want to see you on the other side of negotiating table. You’re relentless.

I’m still going to the gym. I have a small gym at home, but there’s just more space to spread out at the gym and also the dog won’t bother me. At this time, I’ll continue to go, because the owners keep the gym clean and I literally wipe everything down before and after use. Wash my hands 10 times. And most of the equipment that I use, the rest of the members rarely, if ever, use.

As I was going thru the paces last night doing my front squats, rowing, DB snatches, wallballs (hate them as much as burpees), and finishing up with single-legged deadlifts and glute ham raises, a fight almost broke out in the gym. Everything eventually settled down, but not after a couple of the guys, including me, played peacemakers. Advice to CC, steroids aren’t good for your health.

The dogs are going to be my biggest problem with working at home. They bark. I was surprised that my step count was pretty good this week being home. I thought without walking around the big building and to and from the car I would be more sedentary, but I guess walking said dogs and just making sure I went up and down the sidewalk every couple of hours helped me.

Thanks to all. Completed day one, had a good stretch, then ate a healthy lunch. Now off to enjoy some binge watching with the family as we adjust to the next 2 weeks of being home and social distancing!

Congrats @CTCape ! Getting started is the hardest part.

A few years ago (at age 54) I was inspired to try couch-2-5k through a town class (held outside at my “lake loop” trail, 8 weeks culminated with 5k race same location). Something I found very helpful was using a cellphone app to BEEP at intervals. For me it was lots easier than looking at my watch. When I started, I think they were just 30 second intervals, increasing over time.

That’s when I also started habit of listening to podcasts, while i did walk/run. I started with “Serial” season 1 (https://serialpodcast.org/season-one). Then I switched to others - my favorite is “Freakonomics” - https://freakonomics.com/archive/

Hi @CTCape ! Glad you posted. It sounds like you are off to a great start.

I was turning 59 in 2016 when I started running. It was something I had always wanted to do and set a goal of running a 5K. I met that goal and am now training for my first half marathon (which was cancelled Thursday, but more about that below). It’s never too late to start! BTW, except for my shorter runs, I do intervals of running and walking, lots of people do including in races.

So I joined several people for our 6 mile training run this morning. We had some folks bail but that was mostly due to the run being held from a different (pretty, but less convenient) location that usual. We are still on for next weeks 14 mile run. I have never run that far before but I have done a lot of firsts in my 4 years of running so I’m doing it. We are going to call it our half marathon and we will track our finish times and pace on our various fitness trackers. We all have phones so there will be photos. Something was said about a special thing for anyone who goes any distance (14 miles or less) that is the longest run they have done (swag?). The best part is that we are all so excited to do this and happy and proud of ourselves and our friends!

I wasn’t in the best mood this morning when I got up (some events of the past week, not all related to the virus). But once I got out running on a beautiful day on a lovely paved path through a wooded area (lots of daffodils blooming) my mood just lifted.

Went out for my daily outside walk. Said I was getting my vitamin D, except it’s cloudy as heck out.

Now I’m watching Disney + movies.

Thanks @FallGirl and @colorado_mom . Feels good to get started.

Welcome @CTCape ! I am also a C25K graduate starting it just as I turned 53. That was 7 years ago. I call myself a 2-3 times a week 3-5 mile runner. I also do purposefully walking at a brisk pace at least 3 times a week and try to spin once a week. Running even though I don’t have interest in doing long distances ( 7 miles is my farthest run) or doing lots of races I am very dedicated to running on my own for health and well being.

You’ll get lots of support and advice here!

Also @colorado_mom I admit to not really being a stretcher before I exercise. I do start off running a little easy.

And I think it’s especially important to come through for the support here right now. And I DO hope that this lull in life helps people develop new routines that include mental health time outside moving!

Our homeowners’ association is closing our clubhouse and gym for 30 days so there goes my elliptical workouts. I guess I could drive to my office and use the gym, but it seems sort of silly since I’m supposed to be working remotely. I guess I’ll do what I can with treadmill walking on my own treadmill.

I also can put in a plug for Couch to 5k. When I came back to running I read about the program here on CC. I definitely repeated weeks. I didn’t get to finish the program before tearing my meniscus and even with surgery I’ve not been able to run again on a regular basic. If I can get back into running I’d restart the program.
My strength training instructor recommends Yoga with Adrienne on You Tube. I might start doing some work outs at home. My gym is still open and I have mixed feelings about going. I hate to get out of my routine. My husband canceled his volleyball game today. He is the most routine oriented person I know. Even though he plays on the sand he is concerned about his 89 yr old dad who he sees each week.

Welcome @CTCape.
I’m a “lightweight” here, even more so these days, because I’ve given up going to the gym. I do try to walk a fair amount every day, and I’ve been doing physical labor around our house. I walked about 5 miles today, and carried heavy hands (3 pound weights) for 2.5 of the miles.

Going outside for a walk or run is great. Gets the body moving, breathe the fresh air and look at the signs of spring! All good.

Our yoga studio has started streaming classes.

Again, thanks to all for the kind welcomes  . Since the app I downloaded for couch to 5k is pretty limited, I have a question. My gut tells me to start slow and use the app 3x per week, then just walk or do something else on alternating days. I’m not meant to do it every day, correct? Not going to lie, my legs are definitely feeling it after day 1!

One of my friends posted an alternative to singing happy birthday (or whatever) for the 20 seconds of hand washing - doing 20 squats.

Hi @CTCape - running 3x/week is what you should be doing. Alternate running days with cross training (walk/strength/yoga), there are some online suggestions here in recent posts. Take a rest day once a week.

I do not run every day. If I run more than 4 miles I do not run the next day. It’s best to do this at first to reduce possibility of injury.
