Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Thank you everyone for contributing on this thread. I appreciate very much any non-COVID threads on CC.

If you’re a lurker, stop lurking and tell us your story! Doesn’t matter what your current fitness/health/wellness status is, but if you have an interest please share!

Yes, lurkers … play along with us  Lots of “light” folks here.

Well actually yesterday I was a zero day for me - I didn’t even get out for a walk. I’ve avoided running past week and a half due to minor knee pain (usually only at night, never while running). But until yesterday I’d at least get in a 15 min walk. I suspect the issue is work from home / non-use of the knee (and stress). Today I will definitely walk!

day 10 home gym - I’ll leave the forbidden word out of it for today  today went well. I ran to planet fitness (maybe 2.25 miles) then 3x10 min hilly loop and then back home. It was nice being back there even if it’s closed. Then the video of the day was “booty,” but I think every workout in the series works your legs to some degree.

Older S just left. We got some take out and had a picnic. Now I’ll just read and maybe nap. I did a bunch of cleaning earlier and have more to go. But for now I’m good.

When I worked from home in the mid 90s I did not care for it, because I’d do fun/personal stuff during the day and be stuck working at 4am and 11pm. It felt like I was always working. This week, I’ve stuck to my usual routine. Run/lift in the morning, sit down at 8:00. Lunch from 12:30-1:30 and done at 5. It has worked well thus far - well for all of 4 days. Lol

Just checking in.

Pre–corona my biggest source of exercise was soccer (2 days per week) and the walking part of my commute.

My Tuesday evening soccer program is cancelled at least through mid-April but I assume it will be at least May.

My weekend soccer is also cancelled as the County has closed the fields. We stopped a week before that when we began social distancing.

I’m working from home so the walking part of my commute went from roughly 2500 steps to less than 100.

My wife and I are trying pretty hard to stop working at 4:30 and then to walk for at least an hour but that is about all I’m doing.

II also finally got serious about food intake and I’m down roughly 8 pounds from my absolute highest (early February)

@ClassicMom98 - you can call it the “C Gym.”

We have been walking 3 miles or more pretty much every evening for the past two week, but today’s weather might put a dent in this essential activity. Rain, upper forties, and wind is not a great combo, so home gym it is! We ran out of bark to spread, and the topsoil place is closed. So no yardwork either.

Went out this morning and did a 5 mile loop in the damp, cold fog. Still good to be outside.

Went out for an hour walking the dog in the rain and then did a Functional Movement class over Zoom from the local gym.

Virtual yoga flow class and I did a bunch of exercises that focused on balance. I realized that this was an area where I need to improve!

Rainy day here. Got out between showers to get enough walking in to close my Apple Watch rings. It’s a win every day I close those rings.

I love my Apple Watch and love that it really motivates me every day.

Re: Apple Watch. I’m sure I said this before, but I was a reluctant convert from FitBit, but I was going through FitBits too fast (good customer service, and the price point was right, but they just don’t last that long for me) and In October 2018 I made the leap to Apple Watch. I LOVE my Apple watch. I still run with a Garmin GPS watch (and move Apple watch to the right arm for runs and keep the data there, too) which I like for a lot of reasons. The Apple watch is VERY motivating all day and gets me off my butt frequently. I like the metrics (a minute movement an hour instead of the FitBit 200 steps or whatever it was). You need to get 12 hours in the day of meeting the minute and not every hour like FitBit. That gives you a break if you are on a plane (if we ever fly again) or in a meeting. The 30 minutes of exercise a day includes purposeful walking, so I like that metric, too. The active calories metric is the only adjustable one, and I had an aggressive goal before my injury. I dialed it back during the injury and still missed it some days. I have chosen to not get all my notifications on the watch- getting them on the phone is bad enough- but I do let texts come through. I got the version with cellular (hadn’t planned to, but changed my mind in the store) and it’s a good emergency option.

Waving hello (socially distanced, of course) to all. I haven’t checked in here since early March, before leaving for Israel. A quick recap …

Israel was phenomenal; I’m SO glad we didn’t cancel! Our tour group was only 7 couples, and our guide was absolutely amazing. We went with 2 other couples, and had added on 2 extra nights in Jerusalem. Toward the end of the tour we were hearing that Israel was encouraging foreigners to leave the country, but didn’t give a deadline. One couple changed flights and skipped the 2 extra nights; 4 of us stayed. We joked about being the last tourists in Israel.

ANYWAY, even though it was a relatively short trip, we came back to a whole new world. Realizing we would be homebound, we decamped to our place on the RI shore. The lower population density is clearly a plus. Also, we have more space here, including an office for H, who is working 10 hour days.

Exercise-wise, I’ve closed all the rings on my Apple Watch every day, with the exception of the day/night we flew to Israel. Because more and more people in our neighborhood here are showing up to their summer homes, I’ve been getting out for walks first thing in the morning when there are few others out.

I admit to not having weighed myself in almost 2 weeks. Clothes still fit, but there is definitely some stress eating going on. My father (92 in May) still lives alone in my hometown. My brother or SIL is doing his shopping, and he’s not going out, but I’m obviously worried about him.

So I did a bit more googling and found a “park” within a mile of home that had a few outdoor stations. One station has a set of bars. It’s really a public hill with some pathways behind some houses. Anyway, in the AM, I took a rag and some wipes in the light rain, and checked it out.

After about 10 mins of warming up, and cleaning, I got about 10 sets of muscle-ups completed. Yay! I was happy that I had not forgotten how to do them. They’re very technique-oriented.

During my approximately 25 minutes there, a young man came and asked to use the bars too. There are 3 in various heights. I was using the mid-height bar. I told him, “Sure, just not the bar I’m using. It’s been cleaned.”

Later in the day, I did my regular workout, which consisted of front squats, Bulgarian split squats (single leg) and ring rows. Then the 15-min HIIT had pull-ups, light squats and deadlifts. Finished with 3 sets of 10 weighted GHD sit-ups.

Mr. tried to weasel out of our evening exercise plans. Nope. not on my watch. Mission accomplished. ?

Did a 45 minute Sufferfest ride on Friday. I really like this platform for indoor wattage rides. Did my kettlebell certification training workout on Saturday. Lots of mobility work for shoulders, neck and thoracic spine, technique drills on Turkish Get ups ( so many small details to mesh together but I’m getting there), goblet squats, deadlifts, swing progressions, glute work. Then finished up with pull ups and curls which I threw in. Today, I’ll do the mobility stuff , TGU work, abs and another Sufferfest ride. And going through the aid packages available for small businesses.

Storms overnight but sunny and dry this morning- 62 degrees and windy. Got out for 3.2 miles. Had planned to do a run/walk, but ran (slowly) the whole thing. Knee feels a little aggravated (not the same as it felt with the stress fracture- probably some arthritis) so will back off some this week.

The hour walk had pros and cons. It was great to get outside, and the exercise was much needed. But it seems to have kicked off my spring allergies (mehopes that is what it is, and that is the logical explanation … but in these days of covid19 every time I siniffle or clear my throat it stresses me). Staying inside today.

Bench & Press Friday. Skipped chins to give my aggravated elbows another break.

Deadlifts & Squats yesterday. Tried a slightly wider grip on the squats to see if that might help the elbows as well.

Walked the dog about 2.5 miles which is a lot, as I give him permission to stop and smell and mark to his heart’s desire.

Windy, low 40s, grey — very few people out.

Walked by a flooded area near the power lines & heard Spring Peepers!

Still too wet & cold to do any yard work.

Day 11 in the C-Gym  today is my off day, but I usually go to PF and do a 60 min very easy stairmonster and stretch to stay loose. Today was a 60 min walk and then a 40 min challenging yoga video. While in headstand, I also did 5 pike toe taps and was happy they weren’t too hard. Flexibility is the weak link as my legs bend some once the toes get to the floor. Also worked on peacock pose. I feel so nice and straight while in it, but I videoed it, and let’s just say the camera showed otherwise. But my face and legs are both off the ground, so there is that.

Finished the usual mandatory weekly cleaning and grocery shopping. Just reading and napping and dinner and tv left. And more stretching. Always trying not to turn into petrified wood.

People are really going a bit nutty about trying to maintain their exercise programs during this period of corona shut downs and shut-ins. I’m getting Facebook messages from utter strangers who want to buy pieces of the equipment I have in my home studio. There is someone who even wanted to buy my pulley/Smith Bar machine that must weigh 400 lbs and wanted me to disassemble it and pack it up. Then at the fitness studio my daughter and I own, people who we don’t know or who are rare, occasional attendees are asking if we will rent them our customized, branded $2800 Stages bikes - yeah, right - or even a pair of 15 lb dumbbells. This is really getting weird.

@MichaelNKat - you need to guard that stash of kettlebells closely! Seems to be a hotter commodity than TP!!
