Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

This was one of those days that I really did not want to get out there. I planned a short run (2 miles) as tomorrow is a long run day. I’m not sleeping well, it’s windy outside blah, blah, blah. But I did it anyway and am glad I did.

@calmon, I am one of those people riding the bike at the gym, reading my magazine, and working up a sweat. Rest assured I have no need to get away from the people at home. I am fine with that level of exercise (and multi-tasking), and firmly believe that any exercise is better than none. I am not overweight, and am usually the most healthy patient my doctor sees the day I go for my annual checkup.
I try to encourage people to do something rather than nothing, as “light weight” as it may be

I did the free Les Mills bodypump workout for the second time. I got more of the hang of what the proper weight is for me for each track, and how to use the dumbbells more as one plate held to the chest than trying to balance on shoulders like a barbell. DH showed some interest, but I think it would be too advanced for him, plus I don’t think he wants to do an hour workout at this point. I’ll stick with shorter targeted dumb bell choices for a bit longer and get him ready for this. He did like the “your first yoga” I did with him yesterday.

I’m forcing myself to do as little as I can mentally stand to do to let my knee settle down again. I really think I aggravated the stress fracture by coming back too soon. That might have worked in my 30s… I put my knee brace back on and walked 1.5 miles on the treadmill and got my Exercise ring closed on the Apple watch. That felt like a little something, at least. Maybe can handle a little more later.

Reading while on the aerobic equipment is OK IMO. That’s how I did the majority of the readings/studying for school in college. But some people walk SOOOOOOO slowly, so I get it. We have this one guy in the gym who is there for 2+ hours most days. He does literally NOTHING. I’ve never seen him do 1 set, and I’m there for over 2 hours much of the time. He sits on the floor by the wall and plays on his computer or phone. I was wondering just what he was looking at and braved a peek one day, half expecting it to be some adult site. Nope. It was a live feed of polar bears! NOT what I was expecting and I’ve dubbed him polar bear guy amongst my workout buds. I am curious why he goes, but I try not to judge too harshly. He looks like he could be a Vietnam vet, and I’ve never make fun of them.

Day 16 C-gym. Today was my easier run day. 52 min slow jog with 2 one mile walks at both ends. Then worked on pull-ups and core and a 20 min arm balancing video.

I’ve been scary productive at WFH the last 2 days. I need to cut back so nobody gets used to this!

It’s the latest, greatest craze - workout by osmosis. You position yourself adjacent to someone who is working out and reap the benefits!

(Hey, it’s no dumber than most of the workout ideas out there…)

At my neighborhood gym before it closed while I was rehabbing and doing the elliptical, there was a guy on a treadmill reading the newspaper! I was impressed! I can’t even manage the newspaper easily with the pages and everything falling apart while I’m sitting still!

I think I will need two workouts a day now. Normally, pre coronavirus, I do something in the morning, sometimes with a group (swim or spin, weekend long runs) and that is enough. These days, stuck in the house so much, I think I need a second time out in the late afternoon or I sit too much.
Also getting outside daily to run or walk. I missed a day last week and my sleep and mood suffered.
Zoom workouts with swim friends are helping keep me sane, too. I get to see them and because the coach might be watching, it keeps me honest.

@MomofWildChild That’s a bummer. It’s hard to “dial it back.” I know the feeling well.

I texted the owner of the gym that I belong to, since an email went out to members suggesting they were loaning out equipment to members. He texted back that a lot of the “mobile” equipment (barbells, plates, dumbbells, etc.) has already been loaned out.

I said all I need is the Concept2 rower and the weight vest w/weights. He said “no problem, no cost.” Yay! He’ll remotely let me into the gym and then I’ll I need to do is take a pic of what I’m taking and text it to him. I think that’s awesome of them.

I only wish I could take the rope climb with me. But I may get a few rope climbs in before I leave the place.

The Assault Bike and running were getting a little boring.

Also, now is not the time to buy used equipment. There are some people online that are price gouging on used equipment. And before C-virus, you could find 5-10 rowers for sale on the local Craigslist. There’s one now and it listed today.

That’s great @sushiritto How nice to be able to get that equipment for now.

We went to a trail system today as the weather was really nice. I think we got there at 3 or so on a Friday. It’s a pretty remote trail but there were more cars there than I’ve ever seen before.

I hiked and saw one couple, my husband mountain biked and saw no one.

It’s run by the National Forest Service, they do not have the bathrooms open.

Really, I like that the trails etc are accessible, but I think if you break your neck/back/femur mountain biking are you expecting 911? I think this is the aspect that people don’t seem to understand. I suppose it needs to be explained fully, but that is why states are procrastinating. People are people and it is every man for themselves. If I lived in the Wasatch front I suspect I would be riding my bike (road). As it is I think the whole point is to minimize emergencies and avoid any interaction with health care.

So sore today from that kettle bell workout. That means it’s a keeper

Ended up having two amazing walks today. So nice that the weather is improving.

@sushiritto , that was very generous of your gym! At my group fitness studio, we have loaned out our “travel” TRX’s that have door mounts that we normally allow our coaches to take on vacations as well as kettlebells and dumbbells but only to regular, trusted members. But boy, have we gotten some wacky requests from people who are not regulars but have simply seen our social media about the live streaming classes we are doing while we are under government ordered closure. One person wanted to rent one of our $2800 (retail) spin bikes that has our custom graphics, uh, no. But the most bizarre was an utter stranger who saw a picture of my home studio and was pushy about wanting to buy my combo adjustable pulley/Smith bar machine, that must weigh 400 lbs, and asked if I would disassemble and box it for pick up. People are getting nutty. And it’s a shame because even if you don’t have equipment at home, there’s so much you can do with body weight and household furniture and props, backpacks and the like.

@MichaelNKat Disassemble and box it…Now that’s pretty funny.

In my current cycle, I’ve been taking Fridays off and I did. I don’t like days off, but it’s necessary.

@sushiritto – I’m jealous of the Concept 2 ! I mean, I’m making do with the little portable rower I bought from Amazon… but it really isn’t the same.

Day 17 C-Gym I overslept! It’s pretty rare for me. At least it was just an hour and Saturday doesn’t matter, especially now. It mostly just threw my mind out of whack. The sun was rising toward the end. I prefer the dark. The run wasn’t near as good as I hoped, but it was a run and I just took the miles as they came. It was fine in the end. Then, I decided to do the CDF Core Kinetics video. This is my favorite ab workout, and today was the best I have ever done it. Yay! Finished with the main workout – 80 day obsession, Phase 3, Week 2 Booty. Yeah, fun times working your rear when it’s already sore. I still felt pretty strong on all exercises but one. A nice workout.

Now I’m making my chocolate cake. The icing has a jar of hot fudge in the recipe. How can you go wrong with a jar of hot fudge. And also the normal weekly cleaning. I must admit I’m surprised and jealous of all the people who have cleaning services. Well, I suppose I have 3 maids – me, myself, and I. (Kids do help when home and asked) Since I have 4 cats that I’m allergic to, I have to vacuum everything (tile, hardwoods, carpet) every week. It takes a solid 1:30. I can run and lift forever, but vacuuming flat out exhausts me. And also use the chom chom on all the upholstery. That I get the kids to do when home. That’s another 30 min. and then the 3 bathrooms, the laundry, and the kitchen… yay!!! At least I have 2 days to spread it out over. Nothing else to do.

Long run today (6.5 miles). I ran a good pace which I was pleased with. Walked an additional 1.5 miles after that. Doing a Face Time Happy Hour with friends tonight so I think I burned off the wine already.

I continue to do two a days for the most part - hahaha - the only time in my life this non-athlete ever would say that!!

A mix of walking and running with some inside cycling on rainy days, the occasional weight workout and now yay, yard work too. Soon to also mean grass cutting!

Resting my knee, so nothing but a slow dog walk for me today. And helping my husband wrestle a mattress and box spring that had been delivered and was in the garage. Planning to do some curls with a wine glass on a Zoom happy hour in a few minutes.
