fitting in

I just want to say that two people can see the same thing, and have different conclusions and opinions. What tennis sees as not progressive enough, i see as way too liberal, and i'm not a vocal die-hard conservative, by any means.

I'll repeat what I said: You can fit in, but there aren't any real "easy" ways to make friends, here or in real life, you have to go out and make them, at UVA or anywhere.

And re that stat on drinking: if i took that now, i'd say i drink. Though i'll occasionaly have "a" drink now and then, and I hate drunken parties. Then again, as a first year, i was in a dorm (brown) where more alternatives are provided for first years who don't like the whole drinking thing, so maybe my opinions about drinking (and liberalism ;)) are a bit skewed.

no tennis, your description about life at UVA is woefully inaccurate. Your political beliefs make you view the world through a spectrum that is on the fringe at best and loony at worst. Nobody's saying you have to heap praise on your university or that you can never criticize it.

But to make some of the statements you do about the greek system and the apparant systematic discrimination of every minority group on Grounds is incredibly irresponsible. You may sound like you know what you're talking about to people who haven't been to UVA, but you really don't and this misinformation could cause potential students to be scared off. Particularly minority students, who you claim to support (but actually try to drive away with your untrue, ad hominem attacks).

By my conservative estimate, UVA has about a 70:30 liberal:conservative ratio. What would be "progressive" enough for you? 90% liberal? 95%? Your idea of "progressive" ironically means stifling of conservatives or anyone else that disagrees with you, which is not a very "progressive" idea at all.

Of course UVA loves its traditions. It is one of the most historically significant institutions in the entire country. Unlike you, the VAST majority of students and alumni are proud to say they went to UVA and are very proud of what the school stands for. You have every right to disagree, but to present your fringe opinions as facts on this board is disingenuous.

I have the information sessions that day. The visitors didn't say anything about it when they got back to the Office of Admission, so this is the first I've heard about this!

I confess that I found Dartmouth's video absolutely hilarious. Nice adaptation, Hoos.

That video was stupid.

Come on, Cav. It was a cute idea.

If anything, it's a good example of a situation where a couple of kegs would have improved the outcome :) . I mean, streaking with clothes on? I'm disappointed in my fellow 'hoos.

More college pranks.

how did my thread turn into posts about pranks?

As liberal and progressive as I am, Im going to have to agree with bigdirs because some of the portrayals of UVA do scare off people and do scare off minorities when in essence I feel tenniscraze's goal is to attract more to diversify the UVA landscape. Its perfectly fine to be critical and be mindful of constantly praising a University that DOES have faults (just like any University). It seems these problems just need to be put out in the open, and maybe not on a college discussion board. A college discussion board should be in a way neutral so every type of student can be attracted to the University. When we play on people's fears, we scare them off. That wont solve, but perpetuate the problems. We need to approach it in a way that invites minorities to UVA in large numbers by creating a welcoming environment and through welcoming rhetoric. We can change things as the entering student demographics change which ultimately changes attitudes and perceptions. Its true that lambasting the University really doesn't belong here because although I am a critic of some of UVA's features I still love UVA and feel it has much potential for the future. I welcome all students from all walks of life and say the UVA welcomes all and wants all to thrive in our community.

UVA's wasn't that funny. The guy giving that particular tour is, however. I think my favorite from the college pranks video was the long computer start up in the library.

Yeah, that was funny as hell!
