It won’t be difficult to fit in. yes the school is large, but the campus is very small and cozy, meaning the entire school is always within a 5 minute walk of each other. Moreover, for the most part, all regular classes are on the same time schedule, like high school because there is a dire need for classroom/lecture space, thus just walking to and from and in between classes you will see several if not dozens of people you know in different programs and faculties.

In addition to this, I would suggest going to the activities night, im not sure if thats what its called but bascially you walk past hundreds of tables where different clubs and organizations offer information and have a sign up sheet. You can write your name on fifty and actually do only one of them so its a great way to meet people and start doing something you like.

There are plenty of asians at mcgill, from all over, US, Canada, China, Japan, etc. so you will not have any difficulty finding friends there. As for being a non-party person, as at every school, there are kids who don’t drink and still have fun. I would suggest going out with your floor-mates during the first few weeks, whether you plan to have a drink or not. You and people like you will slowly be weeded out until you have a good core group of friends. If I were you I would not shy away from drinking altogether, only because it is a social thing and when you do, people often make it their business to get you to drink. Instead, I would limit myself to a beer or two or a shot or two and that way you are always in control and never have to worry about fitting in. But that is up to you, I don’t want to lead you down a wrong path.

Some people find it difficult to find friends at mcgill, but only because they have expectations of what they want their friends to be like. Some of the coolest kids I met were people I would have never hung out with in high school, and are my best friends now. Keep an open mind, stay relaxed, and do as many extracurricular activities as you can whilst being academically successful, and you will fit right in.

McGill students party hard, but many of them are brilliant and you will see even the hardest of partiers working hard to get 4.0s.
