Fitting in

Since Mcgill is such a HUGE school with a HUGE number of people, do you think it's hard to fit it for someone who is asian, non-party person, and relatively shy?

Also, I have this theory that in big schools, nobody notices you and it's hard to make friends because there are too many people and therefore the people who you want to be friends with will always have other people they're closer to.

It won’t be difficult to fit in. yes the school is large, but the campus is very small and cozy, meaning the entire school is always within a 5 minute walk of each other. Moreover, for the most part, all regular classes are on the same time schedule, like high school because there is a dire need for classroom/lecture space, thus just walking to and from and in between classes you will see several if not dozens of people you know in different programs and faculties.

In addition to this, I would suggest going to the activities night, im not sure if thats what its called but bascially you walk past hundreds of tables where different clubs and organizations offer information and have a sign up sheet. You can write your name on fifty and actually do only one of them so its a great way to meet people and start doing something you like.

There are plenty of asians at mcgill, from all over, US, Canada, China, Japan, etc. so you will not have any difficulty finding friends there. As for being a non-party person, as at every school, there are kids who don’t drink and still have fun. I would suggest going out with your floor-mates during the first few weeks, whether you plan to have a drink or not. You and people like you will slowly be weeded out until you have a good core group of friends. If I were you I would not shy away from drinking altogether, only because it is a social thing and when you do, people often make it their business to get you to drink. Instead, I would limit myself to a beer or two or a shot or two and that way you are always in control and never have to worry about fitting in. But that is up to you, I don’t want to lead you down a wrong path.

Some people find it difficult to find friends at mcgill, but only because they have expectations of what they want their friends to be like. Some of the coolest kids I met were people I would have never hung out with in high school, and are my best friends now. Keep an open mind, stay relaxed, and do as many extracurricular activities as you can whilst being academically successful, and you will fit right in.

McGill students party hard, but many of them are brilliant and you will see even the hardest of partiers working hard to get 4.0s.

Wouldn’t it get really crowded though? lol
How are the dorms? Are they…comfortable/in good shape?

its not at all what you think, if you have a chance go for a visit during the school year and you can see. the campus is beautifully laid out so while there are plenty of people everywhere, it does not seem crowded by any means. although the libraries do get very busy all day/night during exams and its often difficult to find a nice place to study, but there are secret spots you will figure out for yourself. the campus is very busy in the early fall and late spring, when its warm because people hang out on the lawn and outside the library in between classes. but its not the crowded atmoshpere that you are thinking of. its very comfortable and mimics the styled bustle of the downtown just across the street. its cool, trust me.

which dorms specifically, they are all different, click my name and check were ive posted before (a lot i know) but one of them i talked about the individual dorms.

solin is far away (several metro stops)
new rez is beautiful but expensive (former 4-star hotel)
douglass is nice but old (and uphill)
upper rezes are small but close knit and rowdy (and uphill)
rvc, never been, but very close to campus
never been to the MORE hosues or met anyone that was in one

i think thats all of them, but see if you can find my more detailed post.

id be happy to answer any other specific questions about them

how expensive is the nicest, biggest, cleanest rez on/near campus

how are the people there as well???

read my post from this: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/mcgill-university/858326-best-dorm.html

the most expensive is new rez i believe at like 12-1300/month, plus a separate food plan in which each item you eat has an individual cost like a debit card

the single rooms are large… basically hotel rooms with one bed (those are reserved for scholarship students). the corner rooms are massive, almost like suites (but you dont get to pick). and they are as clean as you are able to keep it… you have to clean your own bathroom. also this is the second closest, after rvc. the rest of the dorm is spotless and nice. I’m not sure the cost of solin, but like i said they are essentially apartments, so again, its up to you how clean you keep it… the building is clean. douglas is more expensive than the upper rez i believe, im not sure though, maybe only slightly, but is old in a dead-poets-society type of way. ive never been in rvc but its almost on the main campus, i had several classes literally across the street, but this is an all womens dorm.

if you have more specific questions it would be easier for me. i could write a lot about them but i dont feel like writing an essay at the moment.

all the people are great, which dorm specifically, because there are differences, as you can see from my other post.
