Hello,

I have recently been researching Boston University's Theatre Arts BFA program. I'm really interested in it, especially because of the possibility of creating a concentration with other schools while getting a chance to take intense theatre classes.

Does anyone know of BFA programs that are similar to this one?

BU’s program is rather unique. However, there are colleges with BFA programs that allow students to do a significant amount of work in other disciplines…even possibly double major, though that is difficult.

NYU/Tisch is one. I believe there is a student at the University of Michigan who is double majoring in Musical Theatre and engineering. Syracuse has been mentioned as well.

There is a thread on the MT area that discusses this same question. Although some schools do allow a double-major with a BFA, it is very difficult. My D is about to graduate from Syracuse, and although one of her classmates had a double major (with biology, I think), I believe he took classes during the summer in order to finish. My D was also in the Honors College, and with her class and rehearsal schedule, she only had Monday evenings free to take extra classes; it was very difficult for her to complete her honors requirements.
My suggestion – if you are really interested in a double-major, look at some of the BA programs; there are some very good ones out there.

I don’t think the OP wants to double major. I think she (assuming george eliot is a she!) is simply looking for programs where the BFA is not necessarily all consuming.

Ah, you’re right, I saw that NJmom mentioned double-majoring, and that caught my attention.

Southern Methodist University has a BFA program that is conservatory styled within a liberal arts. One in Acting and one in Theatre Studies, which has you taking directing and/or playwrighting, desing, critical studies in the junior and senior year. Very flexible and possible to double major.
