My better half has decided that our kid (Hs Jr) will not apply to schools that we can not drive to within one (perhaps long) day from Chitown. Rather than discuss the cons of this decision, help is requested.
Our East Coast through Ohio list is set and we are looking at other options to visit within the next six months.
So Far these appear as solid contenders
University of Michigan (Amy Porter)
University of Illinois (Jonathon Keeble)

Not sure about Northwestern as a Teacher transition appears to be occurring soon.

CIM, Oberlin, Cincinnati, Lawrence? Maybe DePaul? (disclaimer: I know less than nothing about flute, so feel free to disregard.) I’ve heard Akron has a good flute program, also.

CIM- teachers are Joshua Smith(principal flute,Cleveland Orchestra) and Mary Kay Fink( flute/ pic, Cleveland Orchestra). Both are great and you can’t underestimate the contacts with the CO.
All students play in one of the two conservatory orchestras right from the beginning. You can PM me if you have any questions.

My D is planning to major flute performance and she is Jr. in HS.
How do I contact Joshua or other teacher in CIM. Is it very competitive??
Do you know how many spots in there?

CIM and most other top music schools are very competitive indeed for flute. It is one of the most competitive instruments out there, along with violin, piano and cello. Your daughter can contact Joshua Smith through his website at [Flutist Joshua Smith, principal flute Cleveland Orchestra, soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, teacher, and clinician](http://soloflute.com/contact.html). It is usually best to have the student initiate the contact rather than a parent.

The other teacher for flute majors at CIM is Mary Kay Fink. You could probably get her contact info by calling or emailing the admissions office.

I believe they take 2 or 3 new flute students in an average year. You would have to talk to them directly to find out how many spots they anticipate having next year.
