I can put ketchup on about everything, but not eggs. My wife does that and it still grosses me out. Yes to the hot sauce though.
A food oddity I may have (you tell me, am I odd?) is to mix salad dressings on a salad. I do like a 80/20 mix of a vinegar/oil based dressing (usually Garlic Expressions) and then a splash of a creamy dressing like ranch or blue cheese or a creamy feta.
Yes to vinegar with fresh cut fries - but also salt and ketchup at the same time.
Not just any ketchup…Heinz ketchup.
No ketchup at all in this house. I guess that’s an oddity here.
We put raw egg in our mashed potatoes and we eat elbow macaroni in a milk/butter broth with lots of pepper.
My son likes to mix soda flavors. He will push every button on self-serve soda dispensers! So odd.
Absolutely. I’m from Pittsburgh and always buy Heinz ketchup!
@MaineLonghorn I’ve mixed sodas. It’s actually kind of fun. Not soda but I also like to mix iced tea and lemonade if both are available at a dispenser. Arnold Palmer.
@MADad…chip butties are of a piece with crisp sarnies: white bread, thickly buttered, with a potato chip filling (“traditionally” Tayto Cheese & Onion).
@AnAsmom im glad to hear someone else grew up with savory french toast.
@abasket you’re not odd. We like to mix creamy dressings with vinaigrette.
I have never had a dutch baby but thought it was similar to a pancake or crepe not French toast.
@MaineLonghorn my D and S used to love to mix all the sodas together. I’m not sure if they do it as adults.
I’m enjoying reading all the food oddities.
I thought a Dutch Baby was like a Puffy Pancake- basically batter in a cast iron skillet, cooked in the oven, so it puffs way up?
Yes a dutch baby is like a puffy pancake cooked in a skillet but while they can be sweet we always make ours savory. The puff goes down when the skillet comes out of the hot oven and then gets a crispy crust - which reminds me a bit of french toast! The batter is more than a pancake batter - especially when made savory!
Dorothy Lynch salad dressing is ubiquitous here (similar to French), and as often as not if I’m at a luncheon (back when those happened) the 2 dressings are Dorothy Lynch and Ranch, and probably 1/2 of the people mix them.
My dad used to always put chocolate cake in a glass then fill it up the rest of the way with milk, especially after a day or 2 and it starts to dry out. I thought everyone did that growing up. My kids look at me weird when I do it, but it’s delicious.
D went to college in Rochester NY where they have something called a garbage plate. It’s made of macaroni salad, home fries, a burger patty, beans, ketchup and hot sauce. Health.com supposedly called it the fattiest plate in NYS.
Western NY residents/student might have also enjoyed “Beef on weck”. I had it when visiting a friend at Cornell in Ithaca, but it was not a thing when I lived in Binghamton NY about an hour away.
This thread reminded me that as a child I loved sandwiches of Armour canned potted meat (like Underwood deviled ham) with sliced pickles on it. My year of best lunches ever was when I went to half day afternoon kindergarten. My mother wanted to send me well nourished, so she often made me omelettes and other fun brunch food.
I grew up near Rochester, NY and my mom and sister loved beef on weck. I didn’t like it as a kid but I do now but of course, I don’t live were you can get it.
My oldest used to mix Sprite and Coke half and half.
Well, THAT is odd!
Also called Boardwalk Fried. Long ago in a small(er) town in Wisconsin, our KFC also had an Arthur Treacher’s fish and chips, and those came with malt vinegar.
We grew up in Mass and Wisconsin, but moved to Colorado where grocery stores had whole aisles of Mexican food and spices. My father claimed he LOVED spicy Mexican food so my mother bought a pound of hamburger and all the fixin’s, and cooked up some tacos. Well, she used a whole bottle of hot sauce with that one pound of hamburger. My father sat there eating those tacos with water pouring down his face, claiming they were great, just like he liked them.
Luckily, she learned that there are levels of heat to the hot sauces and we do enjoy tacos at home.
@MaineLonghorn fish tacos are great but not really the same as beef or even chicken tacos. Shrimp tacos from Chili’s are really good.
My dad did that with stale cornbread!
