There are some places you an eat off campus, (Subway for example) where you can use your "Campus Express" accpunt. This school year we took a smaller, less expensive meal plan and put more dollars in "Campus Express" which gives you more flexibility. I know that first year students are required to take a meal plan but you can also have a Campus Express account.

See this web site for information on "Campus Express" and where it can be used:

The following off campus retailers include:
Eat'n Park - Squirrel Hill
Original - Oakland
Pizza Outlet
Subway - Craig Street
Papa John's Pizza
Giant Eagle

How Lee Chinese Food
KFC/Taco Bell/Pizza Hut
Dominos Pizza
Thai Place Cafe
Boston Market

Star of India

Basically most anything in Oakland is 5-15 minute walk (lower Pitt area), or hop the Forbes Av bus if you're really lazy. Shadyside is about 15 minute walk, a little nicer places than Oakland, a lot of students go there. A good 20 minutes or maybe 30 is Squirrel Hill. There are lots of places within walking distance.

Quite a few places in Oakland have half-off after 11pm everynight. However, when you are a freshman, you will be eating almost all of your meals on campus because of the required meal plan (you can get out of the meal plan option if you live in off campus apartments). So don't worry too much about finding places to eat off campus.

Most schools have bad food services that the students complain about. WUSTL, apparently in their quest to raise their rankings through student satisfaction, brought in Bon Appetit for their food service and now the students rave about it. Case had complaints of horrible food and now they brought in the Bob Appetit service too and also worked a deal with local restaurants to accept the meal card. This just means to be made at priority at CMU, though it does need an administration that decides it cares about such things.

Eat'n Park! Wow, it's been years since i've eaten one of thier smiling sugar cookies. That alone makes all of the putrid, disgusting, filth that the rest of the food apparently is worth it.

"The Student Body Dining Committee deals with dining issues throughout the
different eating locations around campus and works with administration on a
regular basis to attain the best on-campus dining program possible. All students are encouraged to attend our meetings and have their opinions
on food voiced."

I have learned that if you want to improve things you need to do it in an organized manner. Since there is a student body committee dedicated to dinning services it would "appear" that feedback is appreciated. Students who are unsatisfied with the food options should bring a plan to the committee in regards to what other colleges have done to secure Bon Appetit's services. Maybe this is a good place to start if so many students aren't happy with what is offered.

i really recommend the trucks, the food is quite good from there. you can eat on the nice grassy area right near the trucks and for $4 can get some pretty good chinese food.

The food we got on our visit was fine. Our tour guide did recommend that you can get good food if you're careful where you eat. The food's supposed to be better at the cafeterias near where the graduate student are. Teppler's cafeteria was supposed to be very good, too.

i visited CMU stayed there a couple of days...the food was pretty bad to tell you the truth, and there weren't very many options. except for the breakfast, taht was really good =) but then again im not usually a breakfast person lol

How is the vegetarian food selection on student food service?
What are available usually?
What stores near school carry vegetarian/vegan or their kind of frozen food?
