Football

I don't plan on being recruited for playing football, considering I'm not playing for my high school. Last year I had an ankle injury and this year mingled with after school classes. I would like to play football in college though, perhaps as a walk-on. Is the Duke football team hard to make? I'm aware that they are not a great team, but they still are in Division I-A. I play wide reciever and would have been first string varsity had I played. I'm basically 6 feet tall and weigh about 175. I run a 40 yard dash under 5 seconds. Thanks for your help.

Is this a joke?

Have you SEEN their games? ugh.

contact the coach. chances are he's pretty desperate at this point. would you still want to go to duke if you couldn't?

I'm not kidding. I would really like to go to Duke regardless and football really plays no role in my college decision. Football is simply an enjoyable extra-curricular activity and seeing that Duke is not that good, I figured I might have a chance.

if you're not serious about football, why would you want to join a major, if not terribly good, Div. I team? that takes quite a commitment. you may consider intramural flag football or club football at duke instead

Jauggernot-I agree with ay_caramba. Football at a D1 level is at least a 4 hour a day commitment, with practices, meetings and film. Would you want to do this, getting no playing time out of it, and sacrificing your other ECs, social life, grades, etc?

If you really want to play football, a Div III LAC would be great. The NESCAC has restrictions on the hours of practice, length of season, etc. and still has some great copmetition. Teams include Amherst, Williams, Wesleyan, and Bates.

I'm not too sure about the homework load, but if I could get by I'd definately want to play for Duke... considering I even get in. Why wouldn't I get any playing time? The main reason I'm even considering playing at Duke is because I would like to go to Duke for the education. Football is second and I figured that since Duke does struggle at football, it would be easier to join as compared to some other large Division I schools.

Jauggernot-I don't think you understand Division 1 football. This is the absolute best of the best, the top players from the top high school teams. Duke, admittedly, is pretty horrible, but they're still Division 1! They aren't looking for people who didn't play their senior year (nor are they looking for receivers who run a 4.9). I'm not trying to be critical, but it's the truth. I'm one of the better players on my team, a starter since I was a sophomore, and I have absolutely no chance of playing D1 football.

Even if you're not going to get a scholarship, or some sort of admissions benefit from football, they can't keep you from trying out. While most walk ons are invited by the coach, I'm sure there are a few that make the team every year who just try out. Still, this number is very limited, as they have to provide every player with equipment and all that. Plus, very few walk ons travel with the team to away games. Best of luck to you if that's the route you decide to take.

I didn't think that it would be so controversial. I posed it as an idea. I didn't think that Duke even recruited for football. I admit Division I is definately prestigious and reserved to a few. If i went to a college like Miami or Michigan, I'd never even consider going for the varsity team and probably would stick to club football or something like that. One of my friends told me that Duke football was primarily made up of walkons, but maybe thats wrong. At the same time I never said that I was just under 5 seconds for my 40, I tested my 40 about 2 years ago and I was around a 4.6, however I have vastly improved my running. I'd say that it wouldn't hurt to try and although the help is appreciated the negativity is not.

jauggernot, I doubt that you have any chance of playing DI at Duke. D1 is so hard to make. I run like a 4.4, and I know that I have absolutely no chance of making a D1 team. Like 0. The fact that you're not playing football in your last year, severely hampers your chance of playing as well. Like at the level of D1, missing just one week is disastrous. And you're missing close to three months of football.

You should probably contend yourself with intermural or play rugby (the better sport).
